RB S3 Thread

The gap between wing and bumper just looks worse than it is, and damn you i hadn't noticed the wing/headlight gap!!!

Sorry dude, car looks great though, us car guys are just nit pickers!

So tuning didn't go as well as planned, car was at least healthy but wouldn't make the power that its air flow was suggesting...
Ended up with 300bhp / 330 ish lbft torque.. Oh well. I tried :)
Thanks to Bill and the team for helping me again..

Nice torque though, I know it's disappointing not making what you expected after putting so much effort in to it but it's still going to be awesome to drive

Did you have the head rebuilt?

Yea it feels quick and is enough.... For now.
Big turbo next year :)
Yea has agu large port head

I had the same trouble when i got mine tuned but i only left with 250bhp :( you got lucky chap!

Considering the money spent tho and the mods

Hybrid ect its on the low end, all experience tho, still feels nice

Can I ask about the rev range?

you seem to top out on power at 5600rpm - other peoples max power is at 6800? is that the turbo size? my car just goes flat from 5500rpm - in 2nd I can get in the red, but to continue to accelerate I just change up at 5500. I actually thought K04 were supposed to hold on to the red line.

also where is the 330 lb/ft torque figure from?

it is still pretty amazing from a 1800 cc engine isn't it the latest S3 is only 296bhp, drop in a 2.7 v6 Quattro engine in and put on your turbo :)

The power dropping off was the issue, for some reason the torque wouldn't hold to make the power high up in the rev range, standard ko4's do die but the hybrids are meant to hold power better i think, mine just wouldn't,.
Could be something to do with large port head, could be exhaust flow, duno tbh.

Oh and with badger5 rollers you add 16% to the torque compared to other rollers as it under reads torque....

or equally as likely other peoples rollers overread higher torque!

Airflows from the car 270-279g/s max - which is enough airflow for 340bhp worth of power.. BUT the engine would not do this.
Largeport is'nt the right size head to have on a hybrid. Too big, you loose torque. Dropping compression, you loose torque.

Also with it running a reduced compression with a spacer head gasket, and whilst it allowed lot of timing, 20 degree of timing on spool, and 24 degree up top, this made no difference to its torque. (no meth on this car). A curious mix of build spec by circumstance ...

N/A AGN type cams fitted also I believe..

The thing died at mid-high 5krpms regardless of ign and boost being asked of it... Somewhere,. something is conspiring to hold it back.

The hybrid did hold, peak airflow at the 270g/s incoming level was at past 6krpm.. but the engine did'nt make good use of the airflow coming in for some reason.

I wasn't aware the engine had reduced compression but the engine was supplied and fitted for me for free due to the previous engine failure.
Im happy with the power, but obviously wanted more as everyone does..
If i could do again, without doubt would just have gone BT.
And if the car stays healthy for the next year, then il go gt30 next year...

Really sorry it's not gone well for you :(

Without meaning to add to the misery, simply bolting a GT30 to that same engine is likely to produce an equally disappointing result.

If the engine itself has issues, the. A gt30 is very likely to make less than it would on a healthy engine also.

I think we gathered on the day or at least this is what i thought Bill was saying is that the reduced compression from thick head gasket, combined with the large port head, meant that the ko4 hybrid simply couldn't make the power, whereas a larger turbo would be better suited.
Im happy to just chill out on the constant spending on it at the mo, and just use it as my weekend car until funds allow for a bt build..
It gets addictive and i need to rest the wallet!! :)

It's a hobby, albeit quite an expensive one. And you have made an effort to get past the 300 mark which according to what I read was the limit to the stock exhaust, con rods and k04 turbo.
What were you hoping for 350 or 500 ?
Is there anyway of knowing what it should produce, or is it still a lottery when it comes to mapping on the day?

I guess i hoped for 320/330. But ive already had mapping go badly twice before so i know these cars are unpredictable.
And its hybrid ko4 so limit can be up to 370, uprated rods, and 3 inch exhaust system

The turbo is only one component in the setup, as has been said countless times before. If the rest of the spec isn't right or if there are setup issues then it'll never perform to it's full potential. You couldn't strap the turbo to a completely different engine and expect it to produce 360bhp and this is no different. Hunt down the source of your niggles, work out exactly what engine spec you have as you don't seem to be sure, and proceed from there once you have all the information.

Tbh im happy enough with it for now.
Im not spending anymore money or stressing about it as its quick enough for what i need.
I keep debating whether to sell it, until i clean it... ;-)

I have been driving the car mainly in map 3 of 5 as it seems to be smoother than map 1 or 2 for some reason?!
Also map 1 and 2 are no faster overall and it seems to hesitate and stutter slightly in these maps so need to have all the boost pipes upgraded and check for any issues...
Odd

your car did not flow well past 5.5krpm for some reason.. so it makes sense, less is more for your particular setup. the other maps 1,2 are more boost and more aggresive, but your car does not respond "normally" for reasons unknown.

Could it be something as simple as the boost hoses collapsing.
The boost kind of comes and goes in the higher maps?
I will replace all original hoses with forge silicone upgrades and see how much it helps..

given its fixed duty cycle mapped, and variance in delivery is component related.
Worth checking hoses I guess yes

Nice drive to Kimmeridge Bay to get some DSLR action on the go....
