Am I going to regret choosing then 1.2 over the 1.4? Can anyone vouch for the 1.2 and its performance?

My guess is that you would only choose the 1.2 if you can't afford the 1.4. I would think that the difference in second hand price would be very high.
And it's generally accepted that the 1.4 is a superb engine.

So - don't choose any options until you have selected 1.4.

You need to try both, its not a small car for a 1.4 never mind a 1.2

From memory the 1.2 has basic solid beam rear suspension, the 1.4 upwards has multi link.

Go for the 1.4, why would you want a 1.2 in an Audi

V8 makes a good point. It's often not just the engine on it's own. The 1.2 is the base model and will be base in all sorts of subtle ways.
Not sure I agree with steeve though - suggesting that the A3 1.4 is under-powered. It's really not - it goes like the clappers. So may be low powered compared with the S variant :box:, but not compared with most similar sized cars.

I have a 1.2 110ps TFSI 3door S line and I am more than happy with the performance in everyday motoring. The difference in performance between mine and a 1.4 is quite small. The 1.2 is smooth responsive and extremely quiet.
When I took a test drive I could hardly tell the difference between the two
I spent the £1200 difference in cost on higher spec and I still think I have a great car.

Personally i would try both - I think RichardT has the best point though about affordability - the differences in MPG from the 1.2 and 1.4 are probably negligible (you may even get higher out of the 1.4).

But then again it depends where your priorities are - do you just potter about and would prefer extra toys for your cash rather than extra power?

My parents have the 1.2 S-Tronic and to be honest it's fine, it's pokey enough to get you out of a situation. 110bhp isn't a slouch. But you're never going to win any drag races

I drove a 1.2 manual on a test drive (I drove many, many A3s on my test drives) and didn't find it lacking in power. It was a 1.2 Manual Sport. Felt good enough for average driving - pootling about town, steady motorway cruise etc. Had a bit of kick to it even with 2 other people in the car.

When I got my car, power-wise it was different of course. If it's not too late perhaps go for the 1.4 COD - unless price is an issue. You might get better resale values later on.

Or...like @desertstorm said...if you're concerned about power, get it remapped and you'll get 1.4 performance.

I'm waiting for REVO to release their 1.4 COD remap - and then I'll umm-n-ahhh about it for a long time worrying about warranties and S-Tronic and dodgy clutches and will never do it :( (I know me well)

Go for the 1.4 - better suspension, twin tail pipe (if that sort of thing bothers you at all ?) and more "poke".

Go for the 1.4 COD 150 BHP superb engine, very responsive and economical enough when you want it to be!
