Sure this ones been done many a time but here goes.

About to order a 1.6tdi sportback s line.

First s line I've had but now puzzled on the suspension. Appreciate its firm, I'll be running the standard 18s but been told by the dealer to not even go for the s line suspension.

Thing is, I don't mind firm, looking for mean stance and although the engine isnt going to be a racer I want to get a good handling setup. Will a sport setup look higher than a s line setup...anyone any pics?

I've attempted to get a test drive but my 2 local dealers havnt got any, saying no one choses them.

Nightmare!

Any pics or guidance would be appreciated.

Thanks

The dealer is talking sh1t. S-line is the one to go for, anything else is just too high up and there is too much body roll.

However, S-line won't give you mean stance either. To get that you'll need to go around 20-25mm lower than S-line and have the wheels spaced out. That will need aftermarket springs and spacers.

Thought so...just odd neither of my local garages don't have any in.

Perhaps they've sold out.
No, neither Bristol or Swindon due never selling any...if I want to test drive one there's only a couple in the group been advised.

Frustrating...it's like they don't want to sell em

They need your money, you don't need their's...tell them if they can't provide one to test drive you'll go elsewhere...you have the upper hand here!

S Line suspension is crap

Crashy over bumps and unnecessarily firm

I'm about to swap my suspension out as I'm fed up of avoiding potholes

EDIT - are you on about a brand new one as your post says you are about to order a car??

Need to post this is the 8V section; I'd hope the S Line suspension is much improved on the new MQB platform!!

Get the S-Line and change the springs to Eibach and retain the shocks, will be not as harsh over smaller bumps but retain the handling.

This is what i did eventually - it's now perfect. In between I went for OEM springs to H&R 50mm springs which was great at first - lower centre of gravity meant more cart like handling but ride on rough roads, speed bumps and parking near high curbs became a real pain - I hated the car after about a year. Swapped to Eibachs 30mm and the ride is now perfect - it sits higher but I can love with that. Interestingly the h&r springs were so compressed that where the coils rubbed together the paint covering was removed an rusting had begun.

To be fair to Audi, I went to test drive a 8V saloon 2.0TDi S-line and the whole package is just miles miles better than the 8P.

pic on eibach 30s please? (you did still go with just springs with standard shocks?)

I get one done, also have one with the h&r's so you can compare. I'm happy with the s line suspension - it's the OEM springs that are the weak link but as many have said before the Eibach give a far more forgiving ride. If you want the cart handling then go h&r - moral of the story is try before you buy. I didn't just read all the good feedback for the h&r's ultimately they weren't really for me. Having said this I haven't compared the h&r 35mm springs so another option.

Any chance you can provide the pics on the Eibach 30 and H&R 50's? Thanks looking to decide which to fit to my cab.

S-Line suspension is decent. I needed it a bit lower but maintaining comfort so installed Eibach Pro Kit springs (lowers S-Line by approx 5-10mm allround). Here's a comparison pic. Top is on the Eibach Pro Kit springs, 10 + 12mm spacers and 18s. Bottom is same springs, no spacers and 19s.

The S-Line 8p doesn't ride that badly, it's firm, yes, but certainly not crashy. I've had stock Sport dampers/Sport springs, SACHS advantage/S-line springs, SACH Advantage/S3 Springs and H&R -35MM/Bilstein B8 and the ride isn't much different between the 4 various setups. Feels firmest (but not crashy) with the B8s. The main problem is the front damper valving, even he B8s aren't right, too stiff on bump and not enough rebound. Rear damping is fine though in all guises.

A new 8v should ride fine too, better as the car is newer/stiffer and the chassis just better. The S-Line upgrade options are bargains for what you get IMO, maybe there is next to no mark up on them so dealers don't want to push them? who knows.

Bottom pic looks mint. What's it like on 19s; noise and comfort?

have mine on eibachs ,but noticed recently after dropping into a pot hole that the front drivers side wheel was catching the arch ,when i viewed car from front it looks like the subframe needs moving over slightly as the passenger wheel fits in the arch easily ,i know car has never been involved in an accident ,all i can think is someone has not put the subframe back in the correct place as it has a new rack due to electrical failure before i bought it

Very happy. Standard Sline OEM dampers but I also have Eibach ARBs and Whiteline front and rear drop links so these all have an affect on handling. i did everything at the same when I had the H&Rs fitted so couldn't give an objective opinion on just the Eibach with everything OEM. Hope that makes sense.

Very good actually @TDents84, hardly much difference from the standard 18s. It's on 235/35/19 Goodyear Eagles with about 4mm of tread left. Perhaps slight increase on noise on the mway but ride comfort is OEM (or better due to the progressive spring rate).
I've actually lowered the car even further since the bottom pic so I'm now on Bilstein B12 Sportline suspension which essentially is Bilstein B8 Sprint dampers and Eibach Sportline springs which has further improved the stance while maintaining good comfort - really happy. I did not want rock-hard suspension which is why I went for that kit in particular.

Here's a pic for comparison:

Top is on OEM dampers with Eibach Pro-Kit springs.
Botom is on Bilstein B12 Sportline kit ie Bilstein B8 Sprint dampers + Eibach Sportline lowering springs.

Hope that helps,
