I have a 2002 S3, I parked it up behind the housr last night around 10pm.
Been working all day (walk to work) got home at 8, looked out the back window and the brake lights are all on!!
I run like a bat out of hell.
It's not been touched, no one around, I jump in and start it, brake lights are still on, I press and release the brake and off they go.
Any idea what happened?
Got the fright of my life.

Mine would stay on when no ignition would have to mess around with pedal after a trip or they would just stay on

I had the same thing and it killed the battery, must of been on all night.

It could be a faulty brake light switch, if you do a quick scan, if it is faulty it will come up with an error code.

They do come on even with the ignition off, so it does sound plausible.

I've never noticed. God these cars a crap

Got same problem on My S4, had to get new switch today from Audi, £11 so not bad but, be aware they are fragile and a fit once only part. If you don't fit it correctly it will break and you'll need to buy another. I bought 2 as a precaution, will hopefully be returning the second if I don't break the first.

Most, if not all VAG cars have the brake lights work with the ignition off. My 1989 mk2 Golf does it.

But anyways, back to the brake switch, common issue s stated above, but always worth having a peek to see if its just come apart! Sometime you can just clip it back together again, and it'll be fine. Saying that, the part is not expensive, so worth replacing for the long term.

This has just happened to me I wish I never replied to this I jinxed myself lol
