Hi All,

First proper post on here, picked up my second Audi a few months ago after another foray into mx5 ownership.

It's a 57' Plate Phantom Black 8P1, 28,000 miles. Comes with a few options that I know of: Sunroof, Interior Light Package, Flat Bottomed Steering Wheel, Auto lights/wipers.

So far had the timing belt/water pump changed and a service, got a whine at 60/70 which I think is my diff on the way out and a struggle on cold start - going to get the plugs changed. Other than that there's not much else wrong.

On the look out for mods for it, specifically an induction kit (CAI) or miltek Cat back, so if anyone is selling up soon let me know I'll have money waiting.

Hopefully more updates and proper photos to come soon.

Cheers for reading,
Scott

Hi Scott. Good to see you back. Have a look at site sponsors @LVS Racing and @Tsr-performance they were running Black Friday deals on miltek etc I don't know if they carried them over the weekend. Nice choice of car :)

Thanks Sandra, this one's a tad nippier than my old 2.0 TDI (140). I've been having a look at buying new, but the budget on this cars tight, busy saving for a house so really need to be lucky with the classifieds.

Hopefully something comes up or someone's splitting soon :)

Nice car, I also have one but in Dolphin Grey.

Mine also has the same whine when driving at a steady 60 ish mph but hasn't got any worse over the 2 years of ownership. A mechanic friend told me not to worry about it until it gets drastically louder / more frequent.

Mine also struggles on cold start. If i get in and turn the key straight away it struggles to start but never fails on the first attempt. I had the plugs changed but it didn't help. I have worked out if I get in, turn the ignition on and wait for the needles to sweep and then start the engine it starts fine. Would be interested if yours is the same and what people think it could be.

I'm sure someone will be along shortly with advise of what it could be.

Hi Rob,

Yeah, not worried about the diff, I think an exhaust should remedy that. Maybe try change the oil in it as the car was sat a while before I bought it.

For the starting issue, I always let the car do the sweep and lights go out before starting, something that's carried over from owning a diesel. I've no service history, so I know it'll be due plugs so going to get them changed before Christmas and a VAGCOM scan to see if anything comes up.

I'll keep this up to date with how I get on.

I've found a (basically) brand new Revo Intake for the S3, been looking about on the forum and there's lots of information but none very recent. Are these good intakes? I see most folk using ITG etc. but no mention of one of these.

I've no intention of going beyond Stage 2 (even if I get that far), only Stage 1 is on the horizon. Anybody ever had one?

Revo and ITG are both cracking intakes, no hard evidence one performs better then the other, both capable of flowing enough to support 500bhp. I run Revo intake and pushing 406bhp and there are others running more. S3Alex runs ITG (if i remember correctly) and can push 650bhp if he wants to. You'll have no drama with either

There are other intakes out there to but have no info on them

Excellent DT_Racing, thanks for taking the time to comment.

I've bought a new set of NGK plugs to get fitted next week when they arrive, get a VAGCOM scan carried out at the same time and see what shows up.

Pending a meeting on Friday may invest in a Revo intake to be fitted at the same time if all goes well!

The ITG looks a bit on the ugly side, whereas the Revo looks a lot cleaner and smoother, but,as Dt_Racing has said, the ITG is good for over 600bhp.

If you have time, and can bear it,my build thread will help you to spend more money....

40+ pages of things I can't afford! My budget was blown on page 1! Haha

That's a serious piece of kit and very informative read indeed.

Update: 11/12/2015

Trying to keep this up to date as I go along.

So on Wednesday took the car to Matt @ MKS Performance in Oldmeldrum (www.mksperformance.co.uk/) for spark plug change and VAGCOM scan to see what would crop up.

So plugs......totally knackered, looked like they hadn't been changed before and with the car almost at 30k I wanted it done for peace of mind.

Plug numero uno:

Changing we noticed the rocker gasket was leaking into the top of the plugs. Process of elimination, my PCV is shot and letting in pressure which has humped the gasket. So the cars due to go back next week for a new gasket and one of these:

PCV Delete plate from Creation Motorsport. He'll also check my cam follower as we've no record it's been changed, if it's goose'd that'll be changed in the process.

VAGCOM scan showed that the HP Fuel Sensor was showing a fault, some electrical grease (forget the actual name) and that was remedied in the second scan. Also had a set of white sidelights (recommended on here) fitted as the yellow was irritating my OCD.

Picked up a second hand set of Vredestein winters tyres for the front that are now on also, my old tyres were cracked on the sidewalls from it having sat so long with the previous owner, much better!

So, after all that, I've gone and bought a brand new Revo Intake (powder-coated version) from Ricki @TSR Performance, that'll get chucked on for good measure at the same time.

All very minor things, nothing like some of the threads on here, but this will be a slow burner with saving for a house on going (and a new clutch by the sound of it!).

Cheers for reading!

Good stuff, seems your well on top of things. Always good to get those service items done so you know where you stand. Then it's play time with the goodies :)

Cheers mate, probably shouldn't have gotten the Revo intake but couldn't help myself! Hopefully there's no surprises.

Good progress, I look forward to updates.

Cheers Jimmy, me too, hopefully get some decent pics of it in the new year.

That blanking plate from creation Motorsport caused a lot of blue smoke out of the exhaust on mine went back to standard PCs and blue smoke gone something to look out for

Cheers Tezgreig, have passed on the info and we'll keep an eye out on it. I'll keep this updated once it's all done.

Update 23/12/15

Revo intake fitted last night, love the sound but speaking to Matt@mksperformance we think my cars been modified in the past and put back to standard badly!

Oem intake was broken, and the part connects at the back of the engine, should have a clip, but there was none! 2 reasons to fit the Revo!!!

Also noticed the exhaust is blowing, hopefully it's just needing fitted correctly. As the car feels down on power at the moment.

Lots of little things to sort in the new year.

No new updates on the S3 to date, apart from one lumpy idle start after the car had sat for 2 weeks not moving in the pouring rain.

Was going through my Flickr account and found a few images of my old Audi, thought I'd post them in here since I've no chance of getting any of the S3 until the weather dries up a bit.

Rolling A3 by Scott Reid, on Flickr

Audi Light Painting 2 by Scott Reid, on Flickr

That'll do until I can get the camera out :)

So latest news on the 8p1 is its thrown up an engine management light. Had it scanned and been working my way through the list and got it down to either the fuel rail sensor or fuel pump itself.

Anyone had a similar issue? I figure the sensor would be the best place to look first, after that maybe an uprated fuel pump so I know it's done.

Start with the cheapest item to replace and go from there.

So at the weekend I fitted a Rev D Diverter Valve as my car wasn't releasing pressure correctly.

Fairly easy to do, unless you have a Revo intake and the heat shield makes it a little more fiddly

Before:

Comparison:

After:

Certainly makes a difference now and when boosting, instead of making the whoosing (approved technical term) all the way through the rev range it changes tone and dumps the pressure now.

Also had a look at my LP:

I've sourced a new pump and LP sensor, just need to get the O-ring before I switch them over.

Hopefully that'll clear the engine fault code I've had the past few weeks.

So, the Engine Light persists, managed to hook up a fault code reader and code P0171 (P0171P) came up, after a bit of searching found that the PCV could be at fault.

Initially tried changing both the HP and LP sensor on the fuel pump to see if either were at fault, but neither made a difference so we reverted back to the originals.

After clearing the engine fault codes, the engine again started with a lumpy idle, bit of searching led us to beleive that the 'Creation Motorsport PCV Delete Kit' could be at fault. So refitted my original PCV (which we know is not functioning as it should) to see if that made a difference, upon fitting and re-testing the Oil Cap test the engine ran rough and completely cut out.

So I've put in a parts request for new PCV, PCV pipe and gaskets to see if this will fix my issue: Here

Without the engine fault light the car is running rough, so I'll be using another car till I can get this sorted.

Hopefully it is the PCV and this will sort it out!

Scott

Sounds like your having a nightmare hope you get it sorted soon enough!

So after @mjr901 sorted me out with a revised pcv and gasket, I've fitted today and cleared all codes and that's it fixed! Thankfully!!!

Looks like a wheel bearing is starting to whine on right turns and my clutch is still holding on. Hopefully get everything sorted out soon. Got the nc500 booked for the end of may and itd be good to see my own car.

Arrgghh! Engine Light has come on again! After some reading I think it could be the MAF getting clogged with oil from the aftermarket filter. Got a second MAF lined up that definitely works, hopefully get it before the weekend as I was hoping to take my car for a weekend in Perth.

Anyone else got a spare MAF lying around?
(Part number: 06F906461A)

So, after thinking that I'd fixed it cleaning the MAF and taking it on long run, it's now throwing an engine management light every now and then. I've gone back to look at my VCDS scan and the results below:

18609/P2177/008567 - Bank 1; System Too Lean off Idle

18609/P2177/008567 - Bank 1; System Too Lean off Idle: Upper Limit Exceeded
Possible Symptoms
  • Malfunction Indicator Ligh (MIL) active
Possible Causes
  • Fuel Pump (G6) faulty
  • Mass Air Flow (MAF) Sensor (G70) faulty
  • Intake System leaking
  • Exhaust System leaking
  • Wrong Fuel Pressure Sensor (G247) on Fuel Rail
Possible Solutions
  • Check Mass Air Flow (MAF) Sensor (G70)
  • Check Fuel Pump (G6)
  • Check Fuel Injectors
  • Check Intake System
  • Check Exhaust System
  • Confirm correct Fuel Pressure Sensor (G247) part number
When I reset the engine light the car starts but it's a very lumpy idle for the first few minutes then settles out.

So far I've tried: New PCV, Clean MAF.

This weekend I'll be getting underneath it to have a look at the exhaust and boost pipes. It sounds as though the exhaust is blowing when it is rev'd but a mechanic had a look and couldn't find any faults/holes.

Anyone any suggestions?

Update: 31.03.2016:

Not sure if anyone is still reading this or if i should put it in a separate thread but:

Cars been into the garage to have the exhaust looked at, mechanic found a small leak in the downpipe/turbo gasket so that has been replaced, the fuel filter was leaking so that was replaced as well as the oil cooler which was excessively corroded. Hopefully that solves that problem.

They have found an issue with the car boosting, boost is not kicking in until 3000rpm, they say it should be nearer 2000rpm, potnetially the turbo is seized.

I'm really not sure where to go with this now, with the clutch looming it's really becoming a hate/hate relationship with this thing!

Are second hand turbos a fortune?

:unamused:

Sorry to hear about the long run of bad luck you've been having with your S3 mate, that sucks! Considering it had only done 28K when you picked it up, then I'm surprised that so much is going wrong with it, the previous owner must've treated her like crap the poor thing! Having no service history indicates this as well.

Hmm I'm not technically savvy at all when it comes to engines etc. but after reading a lot on here and from personal experience, the K04 is larger turbo of which it doesn't kick in until around 3000rpm. So I would say that your turbo is acting normal, the K03 would kick in around 2000rpm, maybe someone else more knowledgeable can confirm though?

How much is the price difference between a standard turbo and a larger unit?

I had a quick google and found pretty much the same, I don't know if the newer S3's are boosting sooner as this is the second time I've had a VAG specialist ask me this, can anyone confirm this for certain?

That's not too bad for a standard turbo, I wonder if they take the old one as p/x. Hopefully it doesn't come to a new turbo.

I've been reading up on the N75 sensor on the turbo itself, these seem prone to go but I'm just clutching at straws for the moment.

The car sat for a while before I bought it which may have an effect on certain parts, VCDS scans haven't thrown up many faults apart from 'Bank 1 Lean'.

I think I'll try run it for a while and see if the engine light comes on again or not, hopefully that remedies one problem for now.

I had my Revo remap and Revo CAI fitted by VAS Motion last month who are a VAG specialist. Boost doesn't kick in until 3000rpm which seems normal and Gavin the head mechanic, who's been a VAG technician for over 20 years, didn't say there was any problems or anything out of the ordinary (my S3 is an 07 8P1 with the BHZ engine) but it might be worth someone like @S3Alex confirming everything sounds ok regarding your turbo?

Should think you'll be alright in not needing a new turbo, you'd have thought that you're more than overdue some good luck now as the S3 is an absolute beauty, a fantastic bit of kit, so fingers crossed the end of your problems are near and she'll return the favour by looking after you!

Should have it plugged in to vagcom and log the requested boost and actual boost, I'd rather have that than someone say "nah it don't feel right, turbo doesn't kick in soon enough, must be seized".

Just got the info, it's not boosting till 4000rpm instead of 3000rpm and boosts at 1.9 instead of 2.25 (not sure on the units boost is measured in).

Great!
