All my tyres need replaced- question is shall I get winter tyres now and summer tyres later or go for some of the newer all weather tyres-anyone recommend any good ones?

I have 225/40R18

I have never had the need for winter tyres, even freezing temperature today and my hankook evo2 v12 were perfect

Thx- I also have a Quattro engine-I guess this decreases my need for winter tyres?

Are hankook evo2 v12 better than Bridgestone potenza?

Stopping distance in below 7C weather is massively increased on summer tyres, regardless of how many driven wheels you have. Same thing goes for cornering speeds - you will never be able to take a corner at the same speed as on winter/all weather tyres.

I don't have any on my car (yet) but winter tyres do make a difference and that's a fact (below about 7 or 8 degrees C).

I was going to get Michelin Crossclimate, but they don't do them in our size, so will probably shell out for Michelin PILOT ALPIN PA4

About to get a set of pilot sport 3's, I'll let you know how they are :)
I have them on now - very good in the summer and in the wet when it's warm, but as soon as weather turned cold they loose performance quite a bit.

@leshkin

Ohhh testicles, I'm off to the cold cold north of Scotland Wednesday night, so it might be an idea to loose the lead foot when the roads get a bit twisty. Wish me luck!

Yup, better do that. I already spun my car while being a bit silly, so caution is advised.

Watch this.

I had wintercontinental TS830p on my SB FWD that lasted me 4 winters including a whole season in Chamonix. Just this evening I have put another set on my new car. Best tyre by far. I am setting off from Mallorca on Friday and doing a 3500 mile road trip round the Alps plus driving back to Leeds, so I would be silly not to....

It's not about getting moving that is the most important thing, like leshkin said its the braking and cornering that will write your car off

Any damage? I've been warned by a mate that my TDI will be a pig in the corners if I'm not carefully, 15 metric ton of engine etc. As I'm quite new to the car anyway so its looking like it's going to be a very tame drive up, don't fancy sitting in a ditch waiting for RAC :cold:

No damage, just a slightly bruised ego :)

I went into a roundabout with a bit too much enthusiasm than I should have and forgot to switch ESP/ASR off beforehand. It then proceeded to poop itself and randomly lock the inside front wheel. I may have a bad ABS wheel speed sensor or potentially, bad ABS pump, which may be expensive :(

That sounds like it could be a right pain in the **** to fix, hopefully it gets sorted out soonish. My mothers husband currently has some little wiring gremlin mooching about under his bonnet. It's a pity aswell, he knows something is up but can't pin down what.

Don't fret about the weather up here, just been on the weather news that "double figure" temperatures will be here again for the end of the week.

I've got Avon ZZ5 all round on a fwd and I think there a great all rounder, good wet weather handling quiet and last for ages, there very underated and at £80 a corner from formula 1 autocenters make them a bargain and I have 15000 miles on the front tyres with life still in them and I don't drive like a tart all the time..
I have to say I don't drive like an idiot in the wet or cold as your bound to stick it into a tree or worst, so who needs winter tyres??? I might one day when I have a spare grand floating about to buy a separate set of wheels and tyres.

FItted my winters last Friday just before the cold hit. Pirelli Sottozero Serie II, cant even compare them to performance summers below 7deg, winters win every time. The Sottozero's are a performance orientated winter tyre with same speed ratings as summers, they give away a bit of out and out snow performance to acheive better dry and wet condition performance, Ideal for the UK I'd say.

All depends on your preference and your own assessment of if its worth it, the trade off point is different for everyone.
I plan to keep the car a little while and allows me to stick proper summers or even semi slicks on my other rims without worrying about what will happen in winter.

That's an interesting Jack you have there! Out of interest what's the make/model?

Its brilliant isnt it? Not mine unfortunately, i held a winter tyre swapping party, not really... a friend of mine has a mobile tyre fitting company so he came to help me out. Cant help you with what make and model it is, based on a fire rescue airbag lift system so I was told. really low level and quick. Cant imagine its cheap gear.

@Dt_racing no one cares about the tyres mate, we all wanna know about the jack haha! Looks like a trick bit of kit though :)

Nice! You do need a compressor for it, so the overall cost is going to be somewhat higher.

Just ordered my tyres for winter... Decision was mainly driven by typical winters in south of UK (mix of cold, dry or wet roads with some occasional ice and snow). Full winter tyres would probably overkill here, so I decided to look at all weather tyres instead. I finally settled on Vredestein Quatrac 3 after much reading of reviews and tests, as well as weighing-up the cost.

Just a quick update, I got the pilot sport 3's fitted and they are doing the job! The fronts were actually a winterized tire but one was marbling bad and both had a bad case of rock solid rubber going on, for all intents and purposes they could of been wooden.

Anyway back to the tyres, I ended up keeping the rears as they were a good quality all season, while the fronts got treated to the new rubber. The road noise has dramatically lowered and it really grips. No longer is the car trying to climb on to the pavement under hard acceleration in 2nd. At motorway speeds they feel really planted and handled heavy rain surprisingly well.

Side note, I know some of you are going to call me a heathen for not having pilot sports on the rear as well, but it's a fwd car that gets used to go up and down motorways?

Don't worry, mine aren't matched at the moment. As long as they match across the axle.

Just to keep you guys updated, I put the Continental TS830p's on this week. Yesterday I got the 8 hour ferry from Mallorca to Barcelona that got in at 20:30 last night. Then 440 miles up across the border to les Deux Alpes. Got in at exactly 3am.

Temp dropped near the town of Valance to below freezing and once I was by Grenoble it was -4.5'c with sparkly roads. Once up on the twists there was a bit of snow on the roads and one in town, completely white. 5th winter running with winter tyres + Quattro now, wouldn't run it any other way.

Just got some Goodyear eagle F1 asymmetric 2 and it's the best tire iv ever had I had michelin pilot sport 3 previous to that but wear too quick and average in the wet they were awesome in the dry tho tbf

I am swapping my wheels this week Michelin supersports on my 3sdm"s going in the garage bagged up and originals going back on with conti sport contact 5s were fine let year but tested them in snow though

I put hankook evo 12's on a couple of months ago , decent tyres , but no rim protector , which didn't bother me, until all the chips started appearing , they are a must for my next tyres (after a refurb :( ) ....

I've got V12 EVO2 on my 18" S-line alloys and agree the rim protection is almost non-existent - and this is on a 7.5j rim, so fitting them on an 8 or 8.5j would mean none at all. They are also noisy, or rather the noise they make resembles a faint wheel bearing on certain surfaces.

For the weather we've got right now, winters won't help. Summer tyres are fine for most winters, but overall full on winter tyres' main failing are dry and wet grip but are better obviously in icy and snow conditions.

That Vredestein quatrac all-season looks a good bet.

Apart from summer when the semi-slicks appear, mine stays on the Supersports all year.

So far,no issues with rain, ice or snow, but I do turn the boost right down if it's icy.

Goodyear efficientgrip performance 225/40/18 been on for a 2 months (Quattro TFSI), done 8k miles and had no issues. In heavy rain at 70mph they are brilliant, best tyre I've had. Only had a couple of cold icy mornings and have had no traction problems. Wearing really well too, though I do a lot of motorway miles! Just got some more to put on the Wife's Quattro

I've had no issues but just not getting the best out of em under 7degrees and seems silly when I have near new conti 5s on rims just sat there

I have been checking out Federals for the summer good reviews and demon-tweeks had em for 126 a corner

Spent all last year on SuperSports and previous year were Pilot Sport 3's. Like you can't say I'm ever had an issue and I like to go for a play in some thick snow when its safe to do so. Never got stuck but I have broken a few arch liners and under body panel's due to the amount of snow.

In a TDI I would say it's a good call. I went out in a works Golf GT TDI and it was a pig just too much low down torque with crap tires meant it really didn't get anywhere fast when it was snowing.

Would these cut it for winter on my s3 8p.
They're 17"s tires are 225/45/17. I run 225/40/18 standard on my current OEM alloys.
