Picked up some new tyres for my S3, Michelin PS3's got a really good price £102 fully fitted and to top it off, Michelin are doing an offer till the end of November buy four tyres and get a £50 fuel voucher that will do nicely, i only needed the rears as the fronts still had a couple of millimetres which surprised me, has anybody else found this? But being sensible I had all four done and I'm pleased so far. I got on ok with the Conti's done 20011 miles, which is great mileage compared with some, although I felt the cold grip along with the wet grip was lacking as I always detected wheel spin, so decided to go with the Michelins as I've always had them, I must say tho there is zero rim protection, Amazingly less than the Conti's but this wasn't a major concern as (touch wood) I've never curbed a wheel, in fact I might just carry a plank of wood around with me for the foreseeable future just in case

What are you going to do with the wood? Beat yourself mercilessly over the back of the head if bump a kerb ?

Not wanting to start another Tyre recommendation post.
I'm just about to buy 4 new tyres for my A3 184hp TDi, I can get Goodyear Eagle F1 Asy 2 or Michelin Pilot Sport 3 all for £360 fitted.
I like the Goodyear for the rim protector but reading this the Michelin doesn't have one, is this correct and what would you recommend?

They do have one , just not as generous as Goodyear's .

Not a fan of the Goodyears. Prefer the Michelins. Found the F1s particularly noisy one of my cars. Also the ware rate on the Michelins I've always found to be better.

This is a bit off-topic, sorry for this guys, I just did not want to open another 'tyres' topic...

I assume this not a concern for you guys in S3, but how noisy are these in db ?

Do you know what tyres are factory-supplied when you choose 19" wheels ? & db-wise ?
I know there are some more silent tires in the market & was wondering if there is any chance to influence on tyres supplied (with words or... some extra €€). That is important when you drive in A3 on motorway & simply want to enjoy music...

I went for Dunlop sport max rts. Very quiet by comparison to contisports

:iagree:
68dB... quietest I could find in this size, would you confirm ?
My question was, do we know what tires Audi supplies in 19" ? And can we change that from the start in any way ? or will I have to modify and resell original tires... ?

They are very quiet. I got supplied with contisports. I did ask if I could change at the beginning, but told no

ContiSport are not bad but 71dB or 72dB (there are different types), so +3dB means twice as much noisy.

And from what I read here & there, it makes a huge difference.. heard people complain about how noisy that was.

Strangely they seem more noisy than my old contisports on my previous tt. Maybe a change in formulation?

Thanks I've never had Michelins.
I need a good rim protector as the wife can only part when she curbs the alloy

Then I would recommend the F1's, my PS3's have zero rim protection although its a brilliant tyre much better than the Conti's that Audi supplied

Can't say I've noticed any road noise with either tyre, (Conti's vs PS3's) the cabin is very refined, but mine are 18's

We need a rim protector tire thread..... I had 4 new alloys fitted 4 days ago, my old alloys had developed the dreaded white worm and Audi said they would change them FOC, and the Girlfriend has just curbed the 2 passenger side alloys (I can't find the Mad Face)

We do have various photos of the £1 coin test for rim protection, but as the forum search function is broken, it's more difficult than usual to locate them.

@Ben Daniel Grant don't think we have a photo of the PS3 with how many £1 coins you can get balanced on the rim protector, could you oblige please? ;)

edit:
Found some photos of the £1 coin balance test:

Can't see anything on the top tyre list beating the Goodyear Eagle F1 Asymmetric 2 .

Ultimately it will come down to what width of tyre to what width of rim .

Karl's 235's on a 7.5" width rim which is the maximum for a 7.5" .

Here's the Michelin Pilot Sport 3's folks , directly comparable with Karl's Goodyear Eagle F1 Asymmetric 2 as exactly same size wheels and tyres .

Thanks for the photos.
I've already ordered the GY F1. If anyone is looking for a good deal. I got 4 for £350 fitted.
Where from mate? I'm looking to replace the conti's with f1's but looking at £540 fitted

F1's fitted by tyres on the drive for £375 back in August then sold the Contis with 6k on for £220 so not too shabby. Quieter drive and improved rim protection saved me once already !

GY F1 Eagle Assy2 at Halfords website at £94.44 each.

Discount of £15 per pair of tyres until 2 Dec 2015.

Total for 4 tyres £347.76

A "proper" tyre company may all be well and good, however at the end of the day, it all boils down to the skill and experience of the fitter actually doing the work.

Especially when it comes to not marking or destroying diamond cut alloys.

Very true. I always talk to the fitter first and tell him I will give him a £10 if he looks after my wheels

There is no way I can get a £1 coin on mine granted I don't have the rim protector version

£540!!!! Jesus I would look else where, that's seems pricy

That was the cheapest as well. Had another look today at a mobile tyre fitting company...£570 for x4 eagle f1's. Looks like I'll be staying with the conti's for a bit longer

The Tyres on your Drive bloke I had took before and after photos says they have to now as have had people try it on in the past. He also used a plastic tool to remove the old balance weight and then gave me the wheel back so I could remove the left over tacky foam adhesive using turps and a cloth so we had a bit of a system going.

Would use them again based on this experience but as V8 said it all depends on the bloke himself doing the job. Luck of the draw I guess but make it known that you are a fussy so and so beforehand and expect no damage to occur - they might send round their best bloke then ;o)

Worth noting that Audi price-match tyres.

I tried that at my local Audi dealer..... who then went on to say, "to some extent" (regarding the price match)..................

I guess it will vary from dealer to dealer.
