dash the windscreen or windscreen then dash? Which ever way I always get smears on the other or mist residue of the product I'm spraying!!!

Screen first, use a clear screen cleaner like 'Invisible Glass' then when you clean the dash spray the cloth not the dash. That way you get a more even coating rather than a localised puddling.
Hope your not using a silicon based cleaner or it'll look like a Bradford Taxi inside.
