Going to buy one early next year but my wife wants me to get a 4 door and I want a 2. I need help to win the argument lol.

We don't have kids and don't plan to but she has it in her head it will be a pain in the backside when we have my niece and nephew are getting in and out of it. We need to carry them about 2-3 times a week and its mainly me driving it. I think it will be fine pulling the seat forward but as I have a corsa VXR at the moment she thinks it will be as bad as that to get in and out of it.

So anyone got kids and have a 3 door? I would be ok with a 4 but I would prefer a 2

I used to have a 2 door and having to get in and out all the time to let passengers in and out got tiring pretty quick. Have a 4 door now and would never go back so i'm afraid i'm with your wife on this one. Sorry.

I am in the minority, but I much prefer the look of the Sportback.
I had a 3 door car, and only used the back seats occasionally, and hated it.

Has your wife, had the chance to go in both cars?

Sorry but the wife is right. Hauling kids out of a 2 door car is hard on the back, especially when they are asleep as they often do when travelling in a car. Safety wise you can turn on the childlocks for the back doors so the little darlings don't fall out. The Sportback has just that little more usable space and easier to live with. I think they are just as good looking as well.

We are going to look at some when we are off over Dec. Looks like I may loose this one. Just like the look of the 2 door more and I have got it in my head there easier to sell once I have had enough of it.

Always a 5 door or Sportback for me. Too difficult for most passengers to get in and out of the car. Elderly people will also struggle with a 3 door when getting in the back.

How old are the niece and nephew?
If they can get in/out and do up their own seat belts, then I can see how you could better argue your point.

Another vote for Sportback here, but I'm biased :)

In terms of practicality, there is no comparison and if you get one with roof rails it looks quite good too. I was a fan of 3door, but once you have to deal with passengers and extra luggage you quickly get over it :)

I'd go with a Sportback. Coming from a 3 door car to the Sportback has been a real eye opener. That shelf behind the front seats can be used as somewhere for your mates to sit, not just a place to keep the chinese on the way home!

Niece is 19 (and ****** drives!!!)
Nephew 14 (I'm 5'11 and he is a little bigger than me)

Things we do for our family's lol

3 door will be cheaper to buy, but wont hold its value as well as a 5 door, 5 door is much more practical for the more active lifestyle and very handy doing a dump run, 3 door is for the single chap about town and not the grown ups choice, showing my age now, sorry, lol.
But aye its an Audi, who cares how many doors it has??? and not quite an estate yet, that's when your nearly retired, lol.

Good job Audi don't make estate cars, make Avants instead :smile new:.

When a car is 3 or 4 years old the value difference between 3 & 5 door cars is non existent . Only benefit in a 3 door motor if you are a serious tuner and want to race or track the car.

What a load of tosh, touring cars don't race do they, seem to remember the Volvo estates being very competitive???
And would like to see you get an s3 5 door below 10k on a 2008 plate with low mileage and a few extras.

Sportback for sure. And who ever thinks the 3 doors fetch the same money as 5s wants their head checking. There's about 4k difference ***!

Well I never noticed much difference when recently car searching. They were all 5 to six year olds.

I have to agree.
My son has been looking for a three door and the amount of times he thought he had found what he was wanting, only to find it was a sportback, was quite surprising.
There is no, or very little difference in price. There certainly isn't a 4k premium.

4k is a bit much but there is definitely a 2k price difference.
do a search on auto-trader on a 2008/2009 car you will see what I mean.

I think that the difference is more pronounced on S3 variants, as these were only available as a 5door from 2009. Generally, a Sportback S3 would fetch a premium over a similar spec and condition 3door version. At least that was the situation a year ago when I was looking for my current car.

I can't comment on A3 though.

S3 sportback cars were available from 2008.

This is ref S3s not A3's though. They both hold their money well, the sportback more so. I bought my 2010 dsg sportback with 45k miles for 18700 2 years ago from a dealer. They are still fetching that at dealers.

Personally I'd highly recommend the 5 door and although I'm biased they look better as well as being far more practical.

same goes for A5's.
sportbacks command a few thosand premium on their 3 door brothers
