Hi all. Happy New Year.

While at my folks today when reversing around the drive I noticed a very horrible squeak/graunch from what I can only assume is the brakes.
It only happens in reverse though so...I'm not sure. I noticed it before in a local Carpark too.
There is no change to the feel or drive of the car and I'm not doing anything stupid...and haven't before.
The car is an ex-demo with about 11k on the clock.

Has anyone more mechanically minded any ideas? I'm praying it's not worse, but if it is then I'll take it back.

Have a great holiday.

S.

Don't worry if it's only in reverse. Quite common once pads have worn in as you are effectively going against the natural wear etc. Worth mentioning at your next service, and do something straight away if you get noise going forwards.

Thank you, and again, thank you. I will be less concerned but vigilant at the same time.

I've had this since new, only when the car isn't warm. I'm assuming they need some copper grease or something, luckily doesn't do it going forward.

On my first service I am mentioning it, plus few other issues.

My car is booked in for the 22nd for the same noise issue. I will let you know how it goes.

managed to capture the noise I get when reversing sometimes. I had the car into Audi a few month back however they said the could not reproduce any noise that I described.

There is no noise while reversing only comes on when I touch the brake pedal.

I never heard anything like that before! Very clear and noticeable. :(

Sounds like a cow getting slaughtered, better get it checked in asap

That's terrible!!! Definitely not right, get it checked out.

Zero noise today. Seems to be after it's been wet and left to dry, like after a wash.

Was the parking brake set? Maybe it's not fully releasing after being wet.

Could be. Next time I hear the noise I will manually activate the EPB then switch it off again and see if the noise disappears.

I have just bought an 14 plate S3 privately and it has been doing exactly the same thing while reversing out of my drive.

Did you ever get to the bottom of this?

My car is still covered under warranty so wondered if I should get it looked at. Only picked the car up 2 days ago and there has been a lot of rain. It was also washed the day I picked it up so I suspected moisture on the discs, but I was very surprised when I first heard the noise as its pretty loud and very embarrassing!

My new A3 does this when reversing out of my garage, but only after its been washed, dried and put away for a few days. Must be water making the parking brake pads stick/chafe slightly. As soon as I drive off and brake at the first junction they're back to normal. None of my previous cars have done it, mind.

oh yeah mine sounds like after I have washed the car and its sits overnight, tried leaving the EPB off makes no difference. As soon as if move forward once noise gone, did the same thing after a track day (no washing involved) - took to the dealer, nah no problem its normal... in fact anything isn't quite right - its normal........

Will it pass with time or is this something I need to live with? Tempted to get it checked while its under warranty, but from the sounds of it that will be a waste of time.

Not happy that a car that is only 16 months old and cost £40k new makes noises like this.

Has anyone got an tips to reduce the noise?

Yeaaaaaaaaaah! Sounds like a ship horn lol, I had a whole year putting up with it, so embarrassing!

They changed the rear pads on service and it has not been back...

Remove the brake pads, clean the locating tongue on the pad and the guide in/on the caliper and refit and MAKE SURE the pad 'slides' frr. The issue you have is with the pad sticking in the guide and rubbing on the disc - same on our A2, S3, and TT 3.2... If the pad isn't free to move away from the disc it'll rub and moan... No need to Copperslip the pad(s) just need to be clean and free to move...

I have previously had this problem on a Golf and a Beetle - can be damn embarrassing at times!

I had this sound this morning - thought I had reversed into a parked car! Will need to test it again :(

I get this regularly when the car has got wet - washed or even just heavy rain. Truly awful sound.

Car booked in for 3rd December to be checked out, but not sounding like it'll be covered under warranty as brakes are a wear and tear item.

Not over the mood that I'm gonna have to shell out for a repair so soon, but I cannot live with the embarrassment of that noise. It did it after the car was only parked for 2 hours and yet again a quick stab on the brake pedal cured it.

Just washed my car for the first time, got exactly this when I had driven a few hundred yards, stopped after a few hundred more.

Then drove 20 miles, put EPB on at traffic lighs then it stared again. Sounds horrendous and very embarrassing in a multi storey car park!!

Will it just go with time? Almost sounded like a very high pitched squeal

I do as the above have said. Reverse into my drive. Mine does it first thing in the morning and never again that day. It's exactly like the video posted above. Mentioned it when I booked the car in for its first service on Wednesday. Will get them to check it.

dealer said it was just brake dust, mine has started doing it again, and after I wash the car its even louder..... but then again everything my S3 does is considered normal by my dealer...

Wetness definitely makes a difference, especially in reverse. I used to get similar in my Lexus. Also, my son has a brand new Fiesta Zetec S. His brakes make a noise from cold always, both forwards and backwards. With the materials used for brake pads these days, think it's just a fact of life. I would only worry if there was noise when warm. Only way around it is to use asbestos, but I really wouldn't recommend it!!
