Low oil at 5K miles?

Hey all. So just hit 5000 miles today and got a warning symbol telling me to top up engine oil.

First off - is this normal? Seems a bit soon to top up oil already.

Secondly - any oil recommendations?

Cheers.

I had the same at about 6k miles - the manual says it's perfectly normal.

You want 5W-30 which is compliant with VW507.00 (it'll say on the bottle somewhere). I got a litre of Castrol Edge from the local Halfords.

Mine pinged up around 12,000 miles, Audi give you a bottle from new with the car? In a posh little bag in the boot. It took the whole bottle so I popped to halfords to replace it like for like

No one regularly checks there oil level anymore ?

Some use a lot of oil, some use very little.

The amount used early on is often a little higher than after everything is run in,and the rings etc are bedded in properly, but either way,you haven't got excessive oil usage, and as Gazwould rightly points out above,it is worth checking the oil level from time to time, rather than relying on the low oil level warning.

Another slightly strange point(although someone will know the answer to this)....the type of oil used can make a difference to oil consumption.
I've recently switched from Shell Helix to Motul 300V,and the consumption has dropped significantly, maybe due to lower degradation etc etc.
I'm not suggesting for a minute that you switch to something that costly, but it's an interesting finding.

Hi Ignition,

My 1.4TFSI COD oil warning light kicked in at near enough 6k. It has just turned 15k and has just asked for another 1ltr.

I would suggest it's quite normal.

FYI
It is exactly a 1ltr top up when the warning light appears. I stick with the Castrol Edge 5w 30w

Thanks all - good to know it's normal consumption. I guess I never checked it as I assumed it would last a bit longer - but I'll keep an eye on it from now.

I think Audi provided oil and hidden it in a boot compartment, so need to dig around. Funnily enough my colleague's 2015 GTD conked out on his morning commute today because it ran out of oil...no warnings or anything! At least that didn't happen...

I'm not surprised by going to an oil that contains 10-20% group 5 Ester .

I still cant believe that people dont check their engine oil level regularly.

You got to be something short if you run a vehicle for five thousand miles before checking the oil.

Good job it tells you it's about to seize then?

I'm glad it tells me to!

I never saw the need to check engine oil that often - on previous cars I've driven/maintained it never seems to run down. Colleague experiences seems to be same - 20,000+ miles (between service) and no oil top ups needed on TTs, A5s, A3s and Golfs (except the guy with the GTD...)

This being my first car from new I guess it's a different scenario.

Yep - I went for Castrol Edge and exactly as you said it took the whole 1ltr bottle.

First time I've opened the bonnet as well...

I've had a word with the mods and not checking your oil on a regular basis and 20k servicing is now an ASN bannable offence .

Mine used around a litre in the first 12,000 miles and I'm now near 17,000 and it doesn't seem to have used a drop since then.

Never seen the warning light!

Mine needed 700ml too up at 7k but checked again at 9k and it didn't need any more so hopefully it's bedded in and settled down.

Hmmm must check my tyre pressures some time .....

Mine just passed 5000 miles and put in about 300ml at the weekend - first top up. Should check more often instead of relying on that light!

That's one thing I do check though I've found the tyres don't lose air anywhere near as much as other cars I've used. My Dad's 2006 A6 - specifically the front right - used to lose air like me on beans but Audi checked it over and didn't have any punctures/issues. Just had to keep topping it up!

I'll let them know , lol .

A few reasons for tyres going down , a particularly slow one on older cars is tyre fitters not cleaning up the mounting rim sufficiently .

I changed all four tyres at 6k, does that count ? ;o)

1.4 COD

Had first warning at 6k took 500ml and just had second warning at 10.5k another 500ml.

Will check myself whenever I do screen wash now.

Ah yes, screen wash...another thing I need to check. Clearly not very good at this...
