Folks, I would like to change my diff oil front and back for 2001 s3 8L and leave the haldex last.

I have read the forum, is my car uses the same oil/tools for all MK1 model??

Can I use 75-80x g4 grade ? How much oil do I need for the front and back ,and what size allen key do I need? Thanks

14mm alen key,
yours is the mk1 in it?
5l should do both get it from dealers mate

IIRC

It's 2.6litres for gearbox/transfer box
And 1.0 for rear diff.

Oil I used was 75-90w

Gearbox is GL4 spec, rear diff is GL5 spec

yes you can, there will be no damage but basically oil 75-80 is made for gearboxes in Audi with a longitudinal engine wich have a differential with hypoid gearing.

Like engine oils, the weight/viscosity isn't important.
Like tuffty has already said, the 'spec' I.e. GL4 or GL5 is important.

I'd actually like to try some fancy and heavier oils with the cars being so old, worn gears etc. Especially with the increased torque going through them. May prolong the life a little bit.

thanks guys, what a big help I nearly got myself using the same oil for all. SO front one is gearbox-gl4, back is diff Gl5. All clear.

I'm going to change my diff oil at the weekend so picked up some GL-5 spec oil today; I presume mineral oil is fine? I asked for GL-5 oil and was given Eurol HPG 80W-90 Mineral API GL-5.

thanks for that, I'll return the mineral oil and get the synthetic one.

Guys, I just tried with my 17mm allex socket and its slightly too big and wont go in at all. ...what is exact size I need to for my 2001 s3 8L?? Also I can not find BEVAL box???? I got the picture from A3 but I can not see it on my car.. CAn some one please indicate or picture would be appreciated...

Guys just did mine tonight, using gravity feed. I was amazed, both plugs-transmission and diff were clean no metal fillings but a smear of gray slime(fine mesh indeed) after 130000km. Thanks for your advices and inputs.

Finally did mine today, no drama for a change, a straight forward job. I put 1 litre in - is there a marker or anything to check the diff has the right amount of oil in it after the change or do you just make sure 1 litre goes in?

Keep filling until it starts trickling out

Go for a drive to let the oil work through and top up, let it trickle, plug up and done

thanks for the quick reply....I'll take it for a spin and throw another drop in then....much appreciated!
