in those pictures the BM looks ugly, bulbous and vulger and highlights exacyly why I am choosing the more understated RS3.
My god there is so much going on with those body panels, the designers have gone Halfrauds mad !!!!
The VXR Corsa brigade will love it no doubt but its too in ya face shouty for me.

I assume its rear wheel drive ? which I would never have again and quattro for me is essential for me.
Rear wheel drive is fine for a perfectly hot dry sunny day, but quattro can be utilised all year round which is traction & reassurance I like.

The BM looks like its not that practical either - a small cramped coupe.
Jeees my S5 is not as practical as I thought it would be but can just about sit 4 adults.
I can't see that BM seating 4 adults that well.
and with no hatch I suspect the boot may be tight aswell.

Nope ... just again serves to highlight how the RS3 is my #1 choice and does everything so well and pulls it off in a performance package which prefectly suits my taste & needs.

M2 is disappointing, exactly the same interior as the M235i bar different colour stitching, same engine as the M235i with some M3 engine bits to strengthen it, and then some M3 styling bits thrown on without the best bits like bonnet bulge, M mirrors, carbon roof. Then for an auto they want 46k! Really when the F80 M3's with the discounts BMW are throwing about a bring it to low 50's where the M2 will be with any options? You'd be mad to get one over the M3/4
And it's not really anymore powerful or faster than the A45 or RS3 lol

M2 vs 1M

I do miss the BMW Performance wheel - it was very cool with the shift lights and computer!

So they have continued the busy / cluttered theme on the inside of the BM too oh dear.

Its not good is it, way too much going on for my taste.

Audi really score heavily on interiors.

wonder how much it costs though ?

£1300 new. I got mine from a guy in The Netherlands for £650 and my dealer fitted it for £150 - he'd only had it on the car 3 months (which had extensive mods - running 450bhp), but he was putting it back to stock as he had the new M5 on the way.

M Performance Exhaust :sign yum:

Proper M enhancements make it go/sound better, rather than just to look better!!

Is the RS3's boot much bigger than an S3's boot? It looks a little longer but is that for extra leg room for people in the back or does that include boot capacity too?

It's actually very small as the floor is raised even further thanks to the haldex+battery in the boot.

A3 Sportback = 380 litres
S3/A3 Quattro Sportback = 340 litres
RS3 Sportback = 280 litres

They are all the same depth/width though. Not sure where you've see the RS3 rear end look longer than an S3, but it's only different by a few millimetres thanks to different bumpers.

Sorry, I meant the car looks longer, the only one I remember seeing in the flesh drove past me in the opposite direction. Must be the extra doors giving me the illusion it is.
So the S3 sportback boot, is that bigger than a normal S3?

I just reread your reply, I was comparing the RS3 to a standard S3 hatch, not the sportback.

Long and short of it (see what I did there)
Is the rs3 boot is the smallest of them all including the normal 3 door s3

The 3dr is 365 litres or 325 with Quattro, the wheelbase difference between the Sportback and 3dr is only 5mm, so the leg room is near as damnit identical, the boot suffers a 15 litre loss as the overhang rear of the wheels is ~40mm shorter (so you are right, the RS3 is noticeably longer than the S3 3dr).

Hi Guys, over the weekend I did a trip to Germany and of course I tried the max speed - it reached 277 km/h and it won't go any faster. I didn't opt for limiter moved to 280km/h. Can you explain why my car can reach 277 (on a speedo of course, GPS speed is lower) if it has limiter on 250km/h? It's not I'm not happy, but I'm just curious :) On YT cars with limiter on 280km/h can reach 287 and nothing more.

some have said, if you stay in 6th it will go past the limiter anyway.. don't know how true that is.

277 kmh is 173 mph which is 155 mph if you allow for a 10% error in speedo reading ;) If Marham still do the 30-130 days my plan is to go along as they also let you run the car to the limiter in top along their runway + they have GPS strapped to the screen!

TX.

Ok, so 287 kmh on YT with 280 limiter on paper is 178 mph, -10% gives around 160 mph. So, if I had paid for limiter moved to 280, I would be definitely ****** to be able to go only 10 kmh faster (on a speedo) and 5 mph faster in reality, instead of 30 kmh (19 mph) advertised. Am I missing something?

Audi are notorious for being "generous" with the limiter! Oops they all do that Sir ;)

Ok, that makes me a happy man who saved almost 1500 quid for just 10kmh less.

Nice experience. However, when my friend showed 277 to his friend with S63AMG tuned by Brabus, he drove to highway and ended up with 306. I need to get RS6...

I know, I'm a few months late to the party but thought that I would add some observations.

My s3 was in for a service yesterday and so took the opportunity to have a test drive an RS3.

It was Sepang with Aluminium Styling Pack, Titanium Alloys, Lunar Silver Super Sports Seats and Standard Exhaust and Suspension. It is currently on sale at Bury St Edmunds Audi.

I know that the Aluminium Pack has had a lot of bad press within the forum, but to my eyes, it was actually quite nice - not sure that it's value for money though.

Also, there have been some doubters as to whether the RS3 looks dramatic or special enough - again, to my eyes it does and when parked next to my S3 made my car look very ordinary. I actually think that the car looks a lot better in real life than in photos.

The interior doesn't scream RS - but there is nothing wrong with the fundamentals anyway.

Initial perceptions of driving was quite underwhelming. It was very docile and felt quite lethargic as I drove through the surrounding 30mph areas – despite being in Dynamic mode.

At the first de-restricted sign, I put my foot down in third and I was left wondering where the extra 70 horsepower had gone. It genuinely did not feel any quicker than my S3. This was again my feeling when I joined a dual carriageway from a very short slip road.

Things started to change a couple of miles later when leaving the dual carriageway. I was genuinely surprised by the number of crackles and pops during deceleration (standard exhaust remember).

Pulling away from the junction at the end of the slip road, the missing 70 horsepower had made a magical appearance. I can only assume that performance is limited while the engine is cold (this car has also only done 1000 or so miles). Has anyone else noticed this?

So, now the car was staring to feel more as I expected, the engine started to become a bit addictive. It seemed to have a step in performance at 3.5k and again at 5.5k rpm along with a nice increase in noise. I can only imagine what the sports exhaust sounds like. I can't wait to take mine (when I order it) to the Yorkshire Dales to hear the pops and bangs reverberating off the dry stone walls!

I did a quick performance check from standstill to a bridge on a dual carriageway. The distance is a little over half a mile. I won't mention speeds but the RS3 was about 25mph quicker than my S3.

Other thoughts:

The lack of Auto change up at the rev limiter will take some practice - but on balance, I think that I prefer it.
Ride was perfectly acceptable on the standard set-up.
The wheels do not look special enough.

Conclusion:
Apart from the price, I don't really see where the compromise is in this car. It seems to be perfectly liveable with every day. The ride is good and it could be made to look subtle.

The feeling that I have is very similar to how I felt after the test drive I had before buying my Alfa 147GTa in 2005 (a car that I still miss). The engine is such a dominant part of the experience of driving both cars.

It is almost as if you buy the engine and the rest of the car comes for free.

I will be getting one at some point next year.
