hi there everyone been away for a while decided to come back tonight after buying a 03 1.9 tdi quattro got it from a auction thought all was well until I jamp in and tried to take of no 1st 2nd let the clutch out nothing happens but 3rd and the rest of the gears are fine won't go into reverse either so after coming out to what I thought was a bargain is looking not so much just wondering is there a simple fix or is it another box I've searched the internet for one but can't seem to find one I'm no stranger to changing a box but I'm hoping for a simple way out of this any one have any clues or gearboxs for sale lol

The rivets that secure the selector fork to the selector arm fail. Very common problem.
Can be a cheap fix if your name is Ed China. On one episode of wheeler dealers he fixed this problem on an Audi TT with a 10P nut and bolt. You still need to take the box out and strip it partially.
Hope you got it really cheap.

TDi quattro boxes are pretty rare... you can try placing a wanted thread in the classifieds section just in case other than that you will need to look in the normal places such as eBay etc...

As Karl said though... its the selector fork rivet... common problem but requires the box to be removed and partially stripped all for parts costing a few pence..

I did exactly this on a Golf GT-TDI the other week, was actually not too bad a job... Then again that was FWD and quattro boxes are notoriously awkward to get out

Before you go and start changing the gear box I would try resetting the cables first. doesn't take much for them to be out and then not be able to select gears.. got to be worth a try as its a free fix. Also check nothing is stuck under the gear cams on the gearbox. seen it before where you couldn't select 1st or 2nd and all it was , was a socket jammed under the gear selector cams ontop of the gearbox...
