Hi all, get my gearbox swapped for another as the selector fork is gone, managed to get the used one cheap. Is it worth changing the clutch and concentric slave cylinder at the same time?

Not sure when my clutch was last changed, feels solid but I suppose can only really tell once the box is out

I'd definitely do it as its half the work done with the gearbox dropped it will save you quite a bit getting that done while its out.

I had my gearbox do the exact same however i didnt drive the car as soon as i had issues selecting gears and according to my garage the fork fell to the bottom of the box and it didnt seem damaged. I paid for my box to be reconditioned with replacement bearings and also at same time had the clutch done and flywheel ( just standard not upgrades) it cost me like 1800 squid. Luckily work just paid me off as they owed me allot of money. My cars isnt as worth no where near as much as some on this forum but its still not worth selling now lol sorry for the essay but just thought i would mention how i got it sorted and wondered if anyone else has done simular and if at that money they wrekon the garage where fair in charging me that sort of money cheers

ust standard not upgrades

Well...having the gearbox swapped, clutch and slave cylinder done for a total of £550 including parts and labor, I think this is a reasonable price tbh...any thoughts?

550 sounds cheap but I don't know if your on mates rates or your doing it yourself. Selector fork went on my s3 18 months ago. I sourced used box (£250) clutch, flywheel and slave (£300) plus 6 hours of garage labour (£350)

If I could back I would probably would have had my box reconditioned because the box I supplied has now started crunching going into third, also I would have put in a stronger performance clutch because I'm tuning the car to death now.

Hope you get it all sorted mate

Thanks pal, nah they doing it all, I trust them theyve done loads of work of my brothers bimmers :) Hopefully this new (2nd hand) box will be good!

Right, mechanic now sayig flywheel has slight play and should be changed...looking at the price of them I don't think I can afford this right now, I've heard there meant to have 5 degrees of play anyways?

There's always "slight play" in a dual mass, even a new one... That's kind of the point! And yes, it is recommended that anymore than 5 degrees of play it should be replaced.

In reality though, if the car was driving fine, no clonks or juddering while pulling away, it'll probably be ok... How long for though, is another question. And the fact you'll be paying a few hundred quid in labor just to get back at the DMF, probably means it's worth your while doing while you're there.

I personnaly would find the money to change it whilst the gearbox is already of the car... However it is dependant on what your plans are for the car i.e. if you keeping it for a good few years and possible running it into the ground it just gives you that extra peice of mind. My opinion is a generic one as my knowledge on these cars is limited compared to some guru's on here lol so im unsure on how long the flywheels can last on these cars anyway.
