Being bone idal as its a Sunday. Need some advice on tyres. Between me and the misses we are keeping the mobile wheel repair man in business. Went to a couple of tyre places today to get advice on tyre protection for the alloys, no help. They said due to balancing issues all manufacturers don't do them anymore. The guy that fixes our alloys has said rim protectors and rim protecting tyres are not worth it, but I'm sure he likes our custom.
In a nut shell, is there a tyre on the market that can help with rim protection? I'm sure this type of thread has been done to death before so please don't start saying search etc, a simple recommendation on a decent tyre with good alloy wheel protection and where to get them from is all I'm after. Cheers.

Goodyear F1 Eagle Assy 2...................or so we are reliably informed on another thread ;)

Seconded. They poke out from the rim more than any other tyre I've used.

Have to say F1s were the best tyre I've had, previously used:

FK452 - okish but wore badly
Pirelli P Zero - meh
Pirelli P Zero Rosso - ewww! Bad bad tyre

On conti's atm, not bad but not great. What I liked about the F1s is the grip, durability and comfort.

Time for my upgrade, Audi charging £50 more for same tyres and want a printed quote to match (won't accept an online quote stating local garage) so I'm going elsewhere.
So the F1's, blackcircle have 225/40 R18 Y92 at £90 and the W92 at £106 which state they can run flat.
I know nothing about tyres, can I use the W92 when my existing was a Y92 Conti?
The W is apparently quieter.
The W/Y is just the speed rating, so assuming I'll never be above 80mph, the W would be fine - want to make sure I have the rim
Protectors.

Well, camskills charge a few quid delivery per order, then you need approx. £12 per edge at your local garage.. if it works out cheaper then all the better elsewhere, however, when I had my car's wheels refurbished, I had to pay for fitting as part of that so supplying new tyres to them cost no more to fit.
As for speed rating W is up to 168, Y up to about 180 I am sure legally you can fit tyres that are lower than the cars max speed, however, I think your insurance could be invalidated. That said, I don't see an issue with a A3 or S3 even. I think the higher rating tyres are softer, more grippy and probably wear quicker..? Personally I'd stick with the higher rating. Never had run flats so cant answer on them...
