Hi I'm after some recommendations for a new double din head unit.

What's everyone using :)

Cheers

ALPINE all day long for me. By far the best quality product on the market.

Never a huge fan of kenwood.

I run a car audio specialist shop so I have had every model going in my. Ads over the years lol.

Depends what features you are after to which model you go for. Sat nav yes or no. Dvd screen? Dab? Etc etc

I agree. Goes down to what you need. Sat Nav, DVD , size of screen, DAB blah blah blah.

Be aware that aftermarket devices don't switch on like the standard Audi units. 20-35 seconds to boot up from cold.

We supply/fit the audi dd units rns-e if interested :)

As above depends on needs and budget I brought a xtrons has NAV dvd reverse cam USB input Bluetooth steering wheel controls work fine but I only have half amp system as I've read some after market can be tricky if you have the bose full system

To Add my 2 pence,
Im going for a chinese Double Din variant off Ebay which will have all the knobs bells and whsitles.
GPS, Rear View Cam, MP3, DVD, 4g/3g the lot. it also runs android OS.

Ive got quite a bit of experince with 'cheaper' chinese sh*t so iwill be happy with a non branded equivalent.

If i knew what i was doing i would have went the Chinese cheaper route, I knew a few people who have them and its a mixed bag. Some have had no issues others have had a mare but at those prices might be worth it if you know what you are doing.

Chinese units can be ok. The problems I always here with them in any make of car is the radio reception is always very poor and un-usable.

They must just use a poor tuner chip that hasnt been tested over here.

Thats good to know Perry, thanks for the info.

From my experience, it certainly is a mixed bag.

I don't like the idea of sat nav so low , dash or above FTW .

I like 7" screens on double din .

Perry , what did you think of the now superceeded JVC KW - AV 71 BT ?

I dont think there's a lot we can do on our b6/b7's to raise the height of the entretainment system?

Unless its a free standing unit right? True, trying to read your GPS (which is located well outside of the 'driving sight') is very ditracting.

That JVC looks good. Good size screen but shame it doesnt theoretically support Iphnoe 6+ etc.

I'm looking to install a Nu3001 Android head unit. They are taking off, have a big xda developers followin with custom Android roms Etc. Can use spotify, google maps, etc. They are about £250 delivered by DHL on Ali express inc customs tax.

Not sure about how to get it working with existing speakers, sub etc, think there is a way. Anyone know? Otherwise going to install aftermarket setup.

I agree with this - and I have my (android) phone in a bracket on the driver side vent so that kind of sorts my maps issue.

I have a standard double din concert head unit and the main things I would like to add would be bluetooth, DAB and something with better power output as I have a non-bose system, whilst maintaining thesteering wheel controls. I'd also like it to look a bit more modern so like an LCD screen rather than the without. Obviously some of the more recent things like android auto speaking out texts etc would be snazzy but not essential. What headunits would fit the bill for me?

I hated my Double din being so low but you get used to it and it no longer bothers me.

In theory there should be a ton on Ebay that will sort your requirments. I just typed in 'Audi a4 dvd/cd player' and there are lots around.

Im not sure how to 'hook up' with steering wheel controls but some local in car navigation experts should.

I too dont have Bose speakers. The only way for better sound is to get Bose ones. (or indeed someother brand that will fit your speaker holes)

Looks like a decent unit. good price too. Havent a clue about setting it up. Im almost certain a local Sat nav/entertainment specialist will.

I've heard just getting a HU with a better channel output massively helps. Otherwise you can get a separate amp for the fronts. You can retrofit BOSE, but I'm not convinced that its really worth it.

Oh I will look into this as Ive never heard of it. Perhaps someone can clarify?

Agreed, its an expensive retrofit unless you find some 2nd hand ones on Ebay laying about.

We'll I have a full boss system in mine. I would like something that I can retain the steering wheel functions, Bluetooth connectivity would be great, sat nav would be a bonus but not essential but would probably like ano lcd screen anyway.

Anyone any suggestions? I use an android phone so that android HU sounds quite interesting

Also I would like better radio reception, mine is sometimes very patchy. My antenna booster is fine (I think) as it's the latest revision.

I've read about antenna boosters on some HU?

The Audio Specilist who fitted my Headunit has the opinion that the BOSE is not as good as aftermarket for sound

It would be better to say what your budget is tbh and then people can get a better picture of what you want. Retrofit is not cheap neither is a branded unit like Pioneer or Kenwood(both of which have an adapter for Bose).

Budget would be ideally under £500

As an aside have you tried out Car Dashdroid on your phone (or even the beta of Automate), these can give you the majority of Android Auto features but on your phone.

I would only ever install a JVC/Pioneer or an Alpine in any of my cars. I find kenwood very fiddly and a pain to use. Alpine is my favourite and thats what I plan to put in my B6 when I get round to having the spare time. i have fully dynamatted and fitted Morel speakers and still not had chance to do the parcel shelf sub upgrade.

if you are looking android units i would probably go Pioneer

I have just put a Alpine uinto a B7 with bose and multi function steering wheel etc and it looked/ sounded awesome. Following day i put similar Alpine in his wifes A3 8P with the full Alpine fitting kit they supply for the 8" and looked brillaint.

Perry30sport, which Alpine unit did you go for?

I have an '07 A4 with Bose and really want something that has bluetooth, bt streaming, nav, MFSW controls and DAB if I could get that for the £300-400 mark. That's probably a lot to ask for that kind of money so I was looking at the ones from China. Totally mixed bag I think when it comes to their reviews, but where do you even start when it comes to their brands? Eonon, Xtrons, Pumpkin, Pure...? Ok, I prefer that OEM look but I know that the overall experience would be better from a well known brand like Alpine, Kenwood, JVC or Pioneer.

Recommendations would be greatly appreciated.

Really? Any model recommendations for the spec I was hoping to get? Bluetooth, BT streaming, nav, MFSW controls and DAB. Also, are other cables/connectors needed for the install? Just have a tight budget, the kind of budget you tell your missus is £100 tops :p ...when its clearly not.

I fitted a Alpine 925R (DAB/navi/usb/bluetooth TMC traffic etc) This is awesme unit but it is £750 plus. Not cheap unfortunately. I sold it and fitted it into his R32 golf year ago and taken out and out into his A4 DTM.

Can't find a model number on the box or booklet but doesn't have dab has bt NAV dvd USB came with all wires and can bus box I'll take a pic when I'm out in the car so you can see what it looks like

Be great if you did. There are just so many to choose from. Is it the OEM look one? Didn't need a fascia cover I mean?

I had a single din so I had to do the full conversion to double. I didn't need a fascia cover just slotted in fine

nice one. be good to see how it looks :)

By the way, is it Android or their own UI?
