Had a friendly pull against a very nice looking S3 8V today. He saw me behind him and foot his foot down so I obviously had to do the same. It was a very quick car and he did start to pull away, i couldn't catch him but there wasn't a lot in it, seemed to be the same distance we started at maybe a little more. We chatted at the lights and i asked if he was stock, if it had of been stock I would have traded in then and there but he said he was running an MTM box with an exhaust mod and RS3 big brake kit and MTM wheels. He could brake much later too. The car looked awesome in black.

Only reason I posted this was you never see much on the forums about the S3 vs the S4 and in real world i wanted to know what the difference was. I think if mine was tuned i would have walked it. So there you go all the VBOX data in the world and forum posts about 0-60 blah blah blah, means nothing really.

For the money those S3's are a bargain and look gorgeous.

Nice guy too

Sounds about what I would expect.
On paper it would be close with the S3 running 380PS??

Guy at work has a standard 15 plate S3, I had a little play with him in my stage 1+ S4, he was really hard to catch when rolling from about 60mph. I bet when remapped, he'll be rapid as hell! The S3 is over 300kg lighter at the end of the day.

Don't forget, they have haldex which doesn't suffer as high drivetrain losses to the wheels.

Stock 8V S3 producing a quoted 300PS
Stock B8.5 S4 producing a quoted 333PS

Quoted (by Audi) 0-62mph times (I know no relevance lol)
S-tronic 8V S3 - 4.9 secs
S-tronic B8.5 S4 saloon - 5 secs

Unladen weight (by Audi from brochure)
S-tronic 8V S3 saloon - 1460kg (S-tronic 8V S3 HB & SB - 1425kg)
S-tronic S4 saloon - 1705kg

BUT the S4 is a bit of beast to chuck around in comparison to the 8V S3 IMO

Again i dont think a stock would have been an issue. Its not like we are talking 911 turbo vs a 320d they are similar cars so above 60mph i wouldnt expect to walk much out there. Thats just my take on it..
I did have a play with a Golf R a couple of months back but i had over 250kgs of compost in the car and he pulled slightly. Nice cars though. I thought my old 2l Tdi was fast before my S4

Not an 8v but my old 8p S3 felt faster when you dropped a cog and booted it than the S4 does so would expect more from the 8v. However you had to be in the torque band and it felt flat as hell from a standing start where as the S4 just takes off like a stabbed rat. I bet from a standing start the S4 would put distance between between them and it would take a while for the 3 to make it up. Rolling start - would expect the 3 to have the legs if it's in the right mood.

Did you see Matt Farahs 1 take on that stage 2 S4? Got me thinking people dont aporeciate how fast they are because of the linear torque delivery. Turbos just feel different but real world moving matter speed its a beast. Stabbed rat i must remember that.

I had a stage 2 B5 S4 for over 10 years and it had slightly less peak power than my S5 but a fair bit more peak torque (as well as being a bit lighter). I still remember that 'shove-in-the-back' feeling that it gave me when I got the revs right to take advantage of full boost. However even though my S5 does not have as much torque, the board torque curve coupled with the s-tronic makes my S5 much more flexible to drive and overall it seems quicker. I find the idea of going back to a conventional turbo car unappealing now. If the B9 RS4 has an electric turbo then I might be interested, but hopefully by the my S5 will be stage 2 and the difference won't be worth the extra money I'd need to find.
