Hi, My A4 Avant 2.7 multitronic has developed a noise when I pick up speed to around 35mph. I had new tyres fitted at the end of May which have now covered 2.5k. They are Michelin pilot sport 3 which I was told later are prone to being noisy ? Today I was having 2nd thoughts to the cause and hope it is not connected to the engine or gear box in any way. The noise is more of a whining humming sound and is related to speed as it gets worse the faster I go and then quiets down in sync with slowing down. I once had a wheel bearing go on a mondeo I owned but I wouldn't say this was as bad as that got. The car has been serviced regularly by a good independent garage and I will ask them to test ride it this week, only problem they are flat out and booked up for a month in advance but as a good customer I'm sure they will at least test it if I ask.

Any ideas from what I have described? a long shot I know but I hate this type of fault

I had an annoying sound from the passager side of my car, I found what it was. It was the wife !

Very likely to be a wheel bearing

as above sounds like a wheel bearing, just had one done myself last month

everyone got there first haha yeah I had the same thing, was a wheel bearing.
Jacked the car up and span each wheel and one sounded like a helicopter taking off, but no play, was only way I could confirm it without play in the wheel.
Good luck, I got a friend to do it in the end for next to nothing, but garage quotes was in the £230 mark for the front one :(

Hi Guys, Yes it was a wheel bearing and cost me £253 So glad to have it done as it got a lot worse in the past week. Mech said it was a bit of a pig to release the bearing from the housing, Joys of motoring ££££££ It has crossed my mind to look at buying a replacement but since it is all tip top again I am going to run it for a good while yet. I owe 3k on it and it is worth around £7500 - £8k done 112k so plenty of life left in the 2.7 v6 yet hopefully.

It's not tip top, it's time to start saving for the other bearing cos they tend to go in pairs......

Bearing went on mine a few weeks ago, drivers side front .Bought an SKF bearing from carparts4less £65 and it cost me £100 to get it changed at Midland VW. You really need a big press to get the hub and bearing apart. Even then they had to removed the inner race off the hub by grinding through it.
Think mine was OK till I hit a big pothole several weeks ago. It wasn't noisy when spun with no load, but as soon as you got to 20 mph you could hear it.

when I jack my car up with the multitronic in N and the handbrake off the wheel will not spin freely. is this normal.
I don't have any humming sounds but just wanted to confirm this is normal

Any noise from the tyres still?
I’ve recently changed from contis to PS3s (covered 1200 miles) and the noise seems quiet bad - car is booked in next week to investigate further
From doing a little research the PS3 do tend to 'sing' on certain road surfaces just hoping it’s nothing more sinister

Hi Keef, Yes the tyres are noisier than what I am used to so will not be buying ps3 again. I will just put up with them until they wear out as Iv'e spent enough on the car this year.
