Got one of the heads off today, had a good look and saw these cracks, anything to worry about?...it's strange because the 3 cracks are in exactly the same place . sorry the pics aren't great but it's where the injector protrudes

Seen a few crack there, nothing i would be concerned off. You found anything amiss on that side other than these cracks ?

Nothing that Is obvious, I put some diesel on top of the 2 pistons and hoped it would drain away quickly, but it was slow, nothing wrong with the bores all crosshatching still there no marks or lines...

No hairline cracks on the bores ? That's very unusual ? One thing to note, you did not block by any chance the breather pipe from turbo intake to the block, did you ? I had a similar issue with a twisted breather once and it did the same but i doubt you would have made same mistake twice especially as you refitted the turbo ! You tested the nozzles yet ? I suspect the smoke had an oily smell and not a fuel smell ? There was no fault codes in the ECU ? This is a strange one...

Disel is also thick and it wont escape as quick as petrol, i would use brake cleaner or petrol to check for leaks at piston rings !

No hair line cracks, no twisted breather, I see your point about diesel being thicker. have used some petrol and it did leak out of sump but not as quick as I'd have liked...
bob phoned today and said pump was very tired mechanically, and had ecu codes, so is doing a re furb. As for nozzles he wants me to send pics of the burn marks from top of piston, he had cleaned them but not spray patterned them yet. He was surprised that they were not bosio, as that is what most have on these cars, he new they were truck nozzles
engine is coming out tomorrow....

couple of pics of top of pistons

Clean that head Ben, i cannot see anything is that dirty ! Also larger files would not go amiss...

Ha yeah it is dirty, both heads have gone off to be skimmed, stripped, cleaned, new valve stem oil seals, valves re seated and cam shafts put back in and re timed, pistons too, cleaned and new rings put on £310 +vat (excluding price for rings).

If I knew you'll get that far rebuilding the engine i would have sold you my old engine off Martin's fjtwelve's old a6...however is a bit late now as you've spent a bomb on your engine already !

Keep up posted with final results please...

Any news Ben ? I too fitted the old engine of the a6 into my new b5 project car (been sitting at the bottom of the garage gathering dust and dents + scratches) so i decided to get on with it and swap the engine... Managed to get the car running yesterday for a few minutes but there are issues with the in-tank fuel pump. Got in there today and there have been other grease monkeys large at it and they broke the low fuel level sender so i got very annoyed and ripped the whole lot out ! Now on the look out for a quattro tank complete with plumbing so i could get the old girl back to its former glory ! Eager to get it running- might have to write a few maps to MSA15 chips till I get the car running as it should ! The previous owner spent money on sachs race cluch, decat and stainless steel back box ! All exhaust will be removed as i will be fitting a modern gtb2265vklr turbo ball bearing and water cooled so the exhaust needs adjusting to suit ! Need to sort out a FMIC for it, the car has the stock side mounted intercoolers but they wont sustain 2.5 Bar of boost ! Sorry Andrew for hijacking your thread...

Not much at the moment, still busy doing hay, last bit now. I heard from the engineers yesterday that the heads and pistons are now ready for collection. Boost gauge is on it's way, not sure where to position probes as I still have my egr. I will collect Monday and then start big task of re building, there are soooooooo many parts, nuts and bolts which I'm sure you know all too well...... there was a guy on another thread selling an a6 Quattro for £300 don't know if that has the parts you need

Small update, the engineer shop has said the exhaust valve guides (brass ) were completely shot, had to replace them all.

Another small update from diesel bob regarding the nozzles he said the nozzle on injector 1 had split...

Engine is back in and went for a start today but would not stay running, seemed like immobiliser was stopping play, any ideas ?

Maybe it needs bleeding especially as the fuel system has been disturbed...

No, I have very good supply to injectors, fuel came very quick to with refurbished pump..

You had your pump refurbished ? You need to program the pump in, there is an extra immobiliser built in the pump and it will not let the engine start if they not matched- needs to take the VIN number from ecu...

You will need a machine that can read the immobiliser code from either the ecu or instrument cluster...look on ebay for supervag tools, about 65 quid for the 1st version- works fine with the edc15 ecu !

Thanks for your input, have got the code and got her back up and running again, went for first test drive today, no blue smoke! it feels great, faster than I remember, have sorted out suspension issues too with new piston ring kit from bagpipe andy, it's all good to go, have you sorted a laptop yet adamss, I feel a tune is needed...

Bring it over Ben, i have a few custom maps with a bit more boost as well. What Adam did to the turbo ? Did he changed the compressor wheel or just bench flow the turbo ? What was the issue in the end ? Good luck with the car mate...

Adam just overhauled the turbo, same set up, with a new back plate and then a bench flow, the issue must have been the sticky rings on pistons 5&6 and/ or valve stem oil seals in the heads...I'll be in touch when I can head up, probably be early November as we are shut then in hotel.
thanks for all your help.

Ahh ! Still worn valve stem seals will only smoke from cold start, once they are hot they don't tend to smoke no more. Still your car is the first i have encountered with sticky piston rings and worn stem seals. I still think it was a poor spraying nozzle but that would not explain low compression on them 2 pistons...

Split nozzle might well have been it, but it did stink of oil too...and as you said that doesn't explain the low compression in 5 &6.
Would you be able to fit the boost gauge for me please when I bring it up ?

Technically yes, however electrics are not my thing... It's quite simple to fit the boost gauge and there is a perfect take off point on the inlet manifold just on the side of anti shudder valve... Of course one could drill and tap a egr balnking plate but i don't really see the point when the right brass plug is provided from factory...
