Hi all.

Mrs Zero has been having some major problems with her Golf GTI recently and its now sitting outside the local garage broken.

Its misfiring really badly and stinks of fuel. Its really hard to start and white smoke is pouring out the back of it.

It wasn't this bad yesterday and wasn't smelling of fuel. As it had all the spark plugs replaced 3 weeks ago I thought it may have been a coil pack as it was only showing a misfire in cylinder 1 on VCDS.

Now its showing 6 engine faults as below.

Injectors????

Any ideas.

I hate cars!

With the Low rail pressure I would say that might be the High Pressure Fuel Pump HPFP playing up, I believe a common enough failure . You should try and avoid running any petrol engine with a cat thats misfiring as it can screw the cat up, Happened to the wifes Fiesta a few years ago when one half of the coil pack died.

Cheers desert. I was thinking fuel pump but then if the fuel pressure was too low then I doubt it would be spewing petrol out of the exhausts.
I'm not sure yet but I was thinking if an injector was stuck open then that might cause the symptoms.
I know what you mean about running it with it having a cat. Shes driven it a total of about 10 miles just to get it home from work where it broken and then to the garage. It was either that or pay for recovery.

Right I'm off to speak to the garage. fingers crossed!

update from the garage is that injector 4 was stuck open. That was chucking fuel into the engine causing all the problems.
Just ordered an injector kit and 4 injectors for £515!! but it may be worse than that...
Cylinder 4 was full of fuel which may have bent the con rod. will find out later today once they had done a pressure test. If its bent then that will mean an engine rebuild. great!

Not good news at all, Hope that it hasn't hydrolocked for you. I would check the oil level and maybe change the oil and filter there could have been a lot of fuel finding it's way to the sump.

Well the cylinder is holding pressure so it looks like the con rod is ok. I'm a bit concerned about the cat as I reckon about 2 litres of fuel has gone through it. Injectors tomorrow and will go from there.

Oh and I checked my vin today to see if my car is affected by the VW **** up and it is!. Yey!

My wife drove her car about 5 miles running on 2 cylinders and that was enough to knacker the cat. She rang me up and said the car wasn't driving well, I told her to drive it back home which she did, when she arrived home I went out and popped the bonnet, the heat that hit me was immense and the exhaust was glowing with all the fuel that had burned in the cat instead of the cylinder.
It was OK initially then about a week later EML came on. Low catalytic convertor efficiency. Ended up replaceing the cat with a cheap E-bay item and this fixed the issue.

I had similar problems with a TT where I drove it with a misfire, cat was glowing cherry red by the time I got home. Thankfully scraped through the MoT

Al sorted. Replaced the injectors, a coil pack and a spark plug. Cost £830 quid but its back on the road and seems fine
