S3 fuel economy

Quite possible in slow moving traffic but in reality it means nothing as its a singular trip and not repeatable. You can get 200+ when rolling down a hill.

Average mpg for the car will be stored on fuel computer 2 and will probably be around 26-32mpg real time, a million miles away from the 49mpg figure above.

I traveled from Watford to Upton upon Severn recently so M25, M4, A419 and then M5.

139 miles.

Amazingly it took me little over 4 hours as it was on a Friday evening and traffic was absolutely horrendous.

So i took the journey easy and managed average 47.8 MPG which i thought was mighty impressive!

made up for it next day by getting 17 MPG in the Malvern hills :tongueclosed:

No way on earth you are getting 49mpg?!

Damn, rumbled - I clearly took a screen shot of someone else's dash to fool you...

A trip where the majority of it I'm stuck at 53mph with ACC on and in economy mode (****** all diff I think!). I pretty much fell asleep... Followed by a couple of miles at 30/40 in light traffic - simples. It was over 50 when I got off the M3 but decreased a bit on the urban roads. I was a bit early for a meeting, so zero point rushing.

Trip home was much busier traffic and considerable right foot was utilised outside the average speed zone with the expected decrease in the mpg ;-)

Sure is but it's just amazing how efficient (and inefficient!) it can be - my old V6 couldn't break 35mpg in the same scenario.

Just over 300 miles in and on the first tank of fuel, which was normal unleaded due to no super available near the dealer, (and which I would have got 340 miles out of) average economy showing as ~27.5mpg on the lifetime computer. On its first tank of V-Power now. I'll probably look to post a 500 or 1,000 mile review soon.

Decided i'd run around in Comfort mode for a couple of weeks as a run in and get used to the feel of steering, throttle, suspension etc. so I could decide how I wanted it to be set-up. Monday evening was first time i'd put it into Dynamic mode and - holy f**k!!!!

Sure does. I think it was the noise that surprised me more than anything. I'd had it in Individual mode with all settings on Comfort but the engine noise on Dynamic. Going to Dynamic mode I expected just the power but the extra boom from the engine was unexpected but very welcome!

Interesting observation, AAC in a congested environment hurts fuel economy. Pretty obvious I guess, due to the yo-yo acceleration and braking, versus the more progressive and elastic approach from a half decent driver :)

BTW, 22mpg from the first 100miles on fast A-roads.... well the CY equivalent!

True, ACC isn't as good at doing everything - like easing off in advance of slow traffic - but it does enable me to enjoy the scenery instead of looking where I'm going :whistle2:

When everything is doing 50mph, there is sod all difference between ACC and a right foot as there are no alterations in speed going on (aside from the odd 2-3mph overtake - easy now!).

Manuals appear far more economical than s-tronic.
More fun too.

View attachment 69491 View attachment 69492 I listed some actual measured (UK) mileages earlier in this post which were consistently 30 to 34 mpg. I have just had a driving holiday taking in France, Germany, Switzerland, Italy and France again. 2825 mixed miles. My recorded MPGs (litres bought/brim to brim fills) I got 31.61 (French motorways at 130 km/h and then twisty Vosges mountain roads); 32.69 (German autobahn at up to an indicated 155 mph, 149 as 'measured' on a TomTom very briefly but mostly around 120 to 130 mph with long sections of traffic enforced 55-70mph, then Swiss motorways at 120 kph); 31.37 (Four Swiss Alpine passes - couple taken very fast in 2nd and 3rd gear keeping the engine at 4000 to 6000 rpm, the other passes very much slower due to narrow roads and dense cloud, followed by Italian Autostrada at 130 kph); 31.37, 30.31 and 30.74 (mostly rural mountain roads in Provence and Languedoc - some driven very fast others in a more relaxed manner following complaints from the passenger seat; finally 32.04 and 33.49 (French motorways and M20/M25/M1 in the UK to home - all at full motorway speeds [and a bit extra] plus a few French minor roads). Obviously there are some lower speed limits on some sections of motorway in roadworks, urban motorway, tunnels in Italy etc. which all help a bit. I try to drive economically when traffic/roads dictate you cannot go fast anyway but other times the gearbox gets a good workout. I think for the performance the economy is amazing - well beyond my expectations. As an aside I did not need to top up the oil - at all. Oh - its a manual and yes I think it is more fun too. The Alps were fantastic. I can recommend some Swiss/Italian passes if anyone is thinking of doing this.

siitting here on the other side of the world, ........it's not with a small amount of jealousy reading about your trip and being able to use your S3, in on those words, I wouldn't have noticed the trip fuel consumption :)

sitting here in Sydney traffic, the display says 13.7l/100km, (about 20 mpg)

Hell yeah! I totally agree. I have the ability to unleash hell when I want to, and plan on doing just that when the feeling comes along. But for the daily commute when I am plodding in to work and home again, stuck behind a queue of traffic doing 50-60mph... I would rather the wee girl gave me as many miles for my pennies worth of Momentum 99 as possible!

Oh blimey, not another cheapskate!!

The price I pay for Momentum 99 with all the points we build up Tesco are practically giving it away ;)

Boring M1/M25 drive back from Loughborough today with 80 of the 105 miles at between 40 and 60 mph due to road works and variable speed limits and averaged 41mpg!!!

@sunscreemer , that is an awesome extras list! Is that EVERY thing available? Sure looks like it.

Whispers no mono.pur - shhhhh!

No, not everything, but if i'm shelling out so much to buy a car i don't want to be thinking 'if only i had added...'.

Well I have had my S3 for nearly two weeks. It was used with 13k on the clock, manual box. I used to get 400 miles to a tank out of my MK7 GTI with my DTUK box installed.

I managed to get 44mpg on the boring drive back after collection and got average 36 to my first tank.

I have now installed my DTUK after software update on my S3.... It has changed the characteristics of the car quite a lot to be honest but I managed 350 miles to this tank which was my target when I bought the car. Average is now showing 35mpg.

Weird thing is I get better mpg driving my car in individual mode (all dynamic apart from Steering) than I do in comfort or Eco mode. According to obc its a good 2 or 3mpgs when I've compared it to my drive to work which is the same journey every day.

So I'm more than happy with a car I can get 35mpg (44 on a run) out of which according to DTUK now has 375bhp.... And it feels very quick indeed!

FWIW, @300miles now and the last 200 has seen an increase to 28mpg on the same roads.

Plenty of loud pedal and a bit of Dynamic :)

34 mpg driving like a parish priest, all motorway 104 mile round trip.....................couldnt try harder too be honest,. in E/Cruise 67mph bar 1 mile of journey....frickin terrible if l am honest...ps...it's the first time in E mode it makes no difference to my cars mpg l will do the same journey tomorrow in dynamic/manual mode and the mpg will still be the same

Maybe it's just my car??? But it's always been a greedy bampot

I'm getting 42.5mpg at the minute.... Easy with a space saver!!

All the reason why I love how most cars (Except American Audis) now have an Eco-Mode.

You could be getting 40-50 mpgs in Eco mode. Then when you want to go back to racing, change the Drive Select dial off Efficiency and go to Dynamic.

A shame all I have to work with is "Auto" drive select mode, as I found that Comfort sucks up as much fuel as Dynamic, and Individual is kind of pointless with the options being so limited.

I dunno you girls with yer over 40mpg.........bunch of fannies if you ask me!! ;)

In and out of Leicester on my commute and I'm lucky to get north of 24mpg, and its not even fun!

I did have a longer trip up to Sherwood Pines on Saturday but forgot to look at what I averaged :seenoevil:

My mpg just gets worse and worse. I'm doing 16mpg every morning on my trip to work. This car doesn't like traffic!!

So, over 1000miles now and getting between 30-34mpg on fast A-roads.

Amazed by Economy mode, as the car coasts at every given opportunity. Reckon it could do >40mpg, given open road.

I have posted before it think the different driving modes make no difference in my manual S3. I have it individual, all in dynamic apart from steering. In fact I'm sure mpg drops when in Eco mode.

Im still averaging 34mpg according to obc and I don't drive like Mrs daisy.

That doesn't surprise me really - Eco mode I would have thought is more about gear selection than anything else - it's not like the engine can drop a couple of cylinders when needed.

On my manual mk7 golf GTI the Eco mode did make a difference. It turned off a few things like adaptive headlights a few other bits. My Mrs has a manual gtd and it makes an even bigger difference on that.

Like you say the Eco mode on the s3 must lean more towards how the auto box works and changes nothing on the manual

Mine's done an average of 26mpg on its first tank.

Out of curiosity what fuel is everyone using? 95 or 97ron?

Why is there a 'Drive Select' mode for a manual shift car, let alone Efficiency Mode for an S3? That's like tits on a bull.

Audi just over compensated for the Euro market with excess features that are wasted.
