i upgraded the font brakes last year on my 2.5 TDI last year to the 2.7 T brakes (320 mm), but after the power upgrade to (?280 bhp from Chris) the braking capacity is now questionable. I found a set of S6 4B (2 piston) on eBay and am wondering if anyone else has gone down this track. I can imagine they just drop in, but didn't see any search results here.
Regards to all
Congrats on winning the ashes
Andrew

Andrew, best upgrade would be a set of brembo calipers and discs from the b7 rs4... Also you could try s4 caliper brackets and 345mm front discs. Rear brakes needs upgrading as well as the bias will be all wrong.

Would he S6 brakes be an improvement? I would like to keep to 320mm if possible....

Don't think you will feel much of a improvement, the s4 brakes are plenty big enough and work fine with the master cylinder. If you need rear brakea i have a set of 280mm brakea which are plug and play- s6 comes with 265 brakes and some with 280mm. Discs are big money though...

So bottom line is I need to go larger diameter disc to get some serious performance improvement...

Exactly ! The b6 s4 carriers will work with your existing calipers and with some quality discs and pads will make a big difference how they feel. Alternatively a performance pad like ferodo ds2500 will probably be fine for the time being...

Hi! I know this is an old thread but i'm thinking about upgrading the stock brakes on my 2.7T. It's an 07/2001 so one of the first FL models. Engine has gotten some attention though (Wagner SMIC's, K04 turbo upgrade, Bosh injectors, HPFP,... ) The works ;D

But the brakes aren't up to par. My current set-up is the 320*30mm up front with the 60mm single piston (option code 1LG) up front and the very small 245*10mm with the single 38mm piston (option code 1KD) in the rear.
The setup i would like to mount is:
Front: 345*30mm single piston (from S4 B6)
Rear: 269*22mm singel piston (from S6 C5)

I can't find if the 60mm piston caliper is the same for the A6 2.7T and S4 B6?
For the rear i think the swap will just be plug & play?

Thanks for your thoughts!

I originally upgraded my 2.5 tdi brakes, to the ones you have on currently. They are OK (312 -> 320mm), but after the BHP upgrade from Chris, i am still wanting more, as it easy to get into trouble with the more power. I did not go ahead with the upgrade however, as in Germany if the MOT sees something that really doesn't go with the car, you will get failed - especially brakes. (insurance is difficult etc etc) So for the moment, i will look for more aggressive pads and see how it goes. Good luck!

In Belgium it is the same, that's why i'm looking for an OEM upgrade that won't get noticed. Since all parts (especially the rear upgrade i have in mind) are bolt on OEM they won't notice.

What pads are you thinking of? My thougts are goint towards EBC Yellow.

A6 calipers are different to the s4 but will fit the s4 carriers- the brake discs will rub a little on hard braking but not for long. On my old allroad i had rs4 b7 front brakes 360mm and 280mm rear brakes. I still have the rear 280mm upgrade, might be putting it for sale soon...

S4 b6 brakes look stock...

OK! That's the kind of info i'm looking for :wink new:! So putting S4 carriers on my A6 calipers will take a 345*30 disc? Nice!
Your RS4 B7 setup did it need brackets? Or was that just P&P?

S4 b6 brakes look stock...
I thought so!

Hi Andrew, the rs4 should have brackets to fit plug and play, the calipers are radial mounted and fit many cars however they fit plug and play on a6, a4 and allroads- have fitted myself.
The b6 s4 caliper carriers will fit with your existing brakes and will let you fit 345mm brake discs with same pads- that's what i had fitted on the black allroad i drove to Germany.

Thanks for the help Adam! So whith just two new S4 carriers (partn° 1K0615125B) i can mount 345*30 discs?

The brake pads have differerent partn°'s though?
new: 8E0698151C
old: 4B0698151AC

One more question: will every upgrade for an S4 B5 work on an A6 C5 since they have the same brakes factory mounted?

Hi Chris, the brake question came up again as i often found the need for some quick deceleration (have to get used to the new power). I would imagine RS4 calipers on S4 carriers (with 345mm discs) would be nice, i would think the wheels would need to be at least 18 inch though.

Andrew, rs4 calipers don't work with s4 carriers, you can use your calipers with b6 s4 carriers to let you run 345 brake discs.

Erq, the s4 has different pads as the early c5 had anti rattle clips different design compared with the s4. We are also talking about the b6 s4, the b5 s4 had rubbish brakes- HP1 caliper with 4 pads per caliper and twin pistons.
The b6 s4 has HP2 caliper with a single sliding piston and it's vastly better compared with the early calipers and great pad choice !

D3 4.2 V8 brakes can be found quite reasonable iirc someone on here uses that setup.

Slight change of plans: next year i will go for a bbk upgrade. For now I will do with a set of Ferodo DS2500 pads. Can someone confirm that FDS1629 is the right type of pad for my brakes (single 60mm piston)? My current OEM pad has partn* is 4B0698151AD

Thx!

I do like the idea of the S4 B6 carriers with my 273/274 ATE calipers...nearly fell of my chair when i looked up the price per piece of the 345 x 30 mm dics though.
It looks like they will tuck in to my 17 inch wheels (just) and not look non standard.
Finding the carriers will take a little work also ( unless anyone out there has a spare pair)...

Andrew buy a pair from ebay uk if you can, they crop in from time to time as there are a few people breaking some cars... If i were to do it myself i would go for rs4 b7 front brakes, they are good value for money to buy upfront but a lot of money to replace with new units ! Either way you will have wicked brakes with b6 s4 brakes, my black allroad can stop on a dime...

Chris thanks for the tip, I will browse the UK eBay site. Any advise for matching rear brakes? I have a sticky caliper, and would rather upgrade the rear as well

You can mix and match: Passat w8/ b5 Rs4 rear calipers, Audi a4 b5 / d2 Audi s8 rear 280mm front vented discs and stock pads will give you 280mm brakes with dirt cheap maintenance, discs and pads are under £50 in uk !!! I have a set if you want rear brakes as I upgraded to 312mm rs4 b5 which also fit but discs are 250 quid a piece !

Chris, I am interested in your old 280mm rear calipers, please send me a PM

I'm thinking of selling my 1.9tdi B6 A4 in favour of a C5 Allroad 2.5tdi (would love a 2.7TT, but the sensible side of me says stick to diesel) in the new year, so I'm starting to investigate upgrades for it now.

On the brakes front, I currently have S4 brakes all round on my B6. Front discs are 345mm, and rear discs are 300mm.
I know it says above that S4 carriers can be used with the standard calipers at the front, but could the whole front S4 set up be fitted straight onto the C5 Allroad, rather than using the standard calipers?
Also would the rear S4 brakes (300mm discs) fit the Allroad too?

Cheers Jim

Them rs calipers and discs you had on your allroad Chris (adamss24), what's the cost to put them on mine along with rear upgrade?

Finally gave up on getting the carriers, found a full refurbished set of S4 B6 front and rear calipers though.
Will now source some 18 inch wheels, and discs and pads....and
Here we go again....

Chris, is there anything i need to look out for to mount the S4 B6 front and rear brakes ? I have all the pieces, and will do the job in the next month....still on the hunt for nice set of 18 inch 9 spoke wheels though...

Not really much to mention, it's quite straight forward job, just spray the unions with plenty penetrating oil so they get undone quickly. Also get a quality 11mm flared spanner for the unions... O would only use the caliper carriers and the discs really but if you have the time and patience then swapping the whole set of calipers is the way to go. On the rear you will need to squeeze the handbrake levers so it takes the a6 handbrake cable... Offer the brake discs to the car and fit the calipers and carriers and make sure you have the required clearance- some folks have used washers as spacers to center the caliper on the discs... I would get a eazybleed kit so you can bleed the brakes by yourself...

Thanks again, as always Chris. Sounds simple, ordered the flared spanner and have a bleeder kit already. Grtting bogged down on wheek size though. I want "RS" style, which was also offered on the S-line later. The ET ( offset) on the former is 30 (i think) the later is 43. Both are 18x8. Any words to the wise ? (2002 C5 AKE quattro)
Thanks from Germany - the land where no one runs a stage 3 tune on their 2.5 TDI......

Do you have a picture of the wheels you're after Andrew ? Depending on design you might need some spacers, i ran 20" rs4 style wheels with 10mm spacers on the front and 15mm on the rear, 8.5" and 9" on the rear, i had the a6 type calipers which offer little clearance compared with the s4 which have a flat face more or less...
Bear in mind that the s4 had 18" wheels with flat spokes to clear the 345mm brakes, you can stick to these if you cannot find 19" in the right size...
I have a set of 5 s4 wheels if you're in need, still did not manage to get home yet, too busy with work! Soon, very soon i will make my trip there...

Chruis, i found a set of 2005 3.0 tdi S-line 18x8, ET 43. Which are a RS look alike. 4E0601025AB.
Having said that though i am not in a huge hurry, if you can swing by i can wait. Please send me a PM with the details. Kindest regards
Andrew

hi Andrew, i had a set of these wheels on a b6 audi a4 a few years ago, they looked ok however a touch small if i may say for a c5 a6. Personally i would not put anything smsller than 19" on the c5 as it's quite a large motor but i had the fat5 wheels on Martin's/ Fjtwelve audi a6 and that looked much better with chunky 5 spoke wheels

Chris many thanks for the photos, all in all i prefer the 9 spoke wheels you had on your A4. Call me old fashion, but I need my car to be rather understated, so the fat5 look would not quite work....
So essential question is if the 4E0601025AB would fit with the S4 brakes, if not then i would then go for the S4 wheels.......

andrew, i still have one of them rs4 style wheels, the car in the picture above had a set of 5 wheels ! I could fit one to my mate Damian audi a6 and see if it clears the caliper- he does have 320mm brakes though just like you have now- however it's not entirely sure that it will clear with the s4 brakes fitted... The only real way to make sure if the wheels you choose will clear the brakes it will be if you buy a wheel and offer it to the car- you will need a spare if it's good !

Chris, just found a RS style wheel set which will fit the S4 B6 brakes, number 4D0601025AH.
This should clear the brakes, and give me the look i am after. Any experience with these wheels?

The s4 wheels were et43 but had very shallow spokes and flat face, aparently the min size wheels the s4 takes is 17" however i never seen one on 17" wheels... Worst case scenario you might need some sort of spacers few mm thick if the brakes foul the wheels. If these are the wheels you're after then go for it !
