seems everyone has a different idea what constitutes a "stage"?

eg someone in an 8P S3 thread saying he had stage 3, but I understood that to be at least different turbo. Then what mods differentiate stage 1 and 2? no mods whatsoever then remapped = stage 1, easy enough. but after that it's a bit vague! I add an intake & exhaust - that state 2 yet? probably. what about if i then add an intercooler - does that change the stage?

soooo, unless everyone can agree on what makes up each stage can people please stop using the term!!!

Just tell us what power you're running, because telling me you're "stage 2 mate" means, literally, feck all to me!!

rant over :)

My basic understanding is
stage one induction
stage two is an exhaust and intercooler
stage two plus fuel pump plus engine mounts
stage three turbo is a definite requirement or its simply not stage three
stage four is internals of the engine

I agree it does seem there are different views as to what constitutes the different stages.

In my view,

Stage 1 is a straightforward remap
Stage 2 requires a decat/sports cat
Stage 3 is bigger/hybrid turbo
Stage 4 is internal engine work.

To me they are the main restrictions at the various stages of tune.
Things like induction, full exhaust, intercooler etc are required within that but it's more ambiguous at what point they are required depending on tuner

I think stages are different for different tuners/mappers, as each tuner has a different requirement before implementing a specific stage of map.

The concensus is;

Stage1 - Remap only
Stage 1.5(I call it this) - a car that's stage2 ready, but running a stage1 remap.
Stage 2 - Decat/sportscat, performance exhaust, FMIC, Induction kit of some sort and Stage2/custom
remap.
Stage 2+ - As above, but with Hybrid turbo/rods.
Stage 3 - anything big turbo.
Stage 4 - Never heard of a stage 4? lol

Stage 1 - You ferret away a few quid and get yourself a remap.
Stage 2 - Credit card gets stretched.
Stage 3 - Bank loan, (credit card is hammered), Missus is starting to notice the more frequent visits to the fuel pumps, but is grateful for the extra Club Card points. (This does not apply to a petrol snob).
Stage 4 - You are now divorced, you don't care. You will willingly spend your half of the marital home sale on your pride and joy.

:highly amused:

Just to add my 2p:

Stage 1: remap
Stage 2: remap, CAI, TBE
Stage 2+: remap, CAI, TBE, HPFP

Not too sure where a FMIC fits in or bigger injectors, might be when people start looking at bigger turbos.

I guess with the above, the stages differs with each car.

Oh I just assumed we were talking about the S3 due to the OP. But yeah I agree, not all cars need a HPFP upgrade, some need a FMIC when you want more than just a remap.

So really then, it's all subjective lol.

think my point's been proved lol. everyone has a different idea - so can we please stop referring to stages! :whip:

just quote torque/power instead :)

exactly. it's quite possible one persons idea of a stage 2 could beat anothers idea of stage 3! we're just making it up as we go along lol

In the US a stage 1+ is basically the equivalent of shark performance stage 3!
