Hi all,

I don't post much but have used this site a lot over the years I owned my s3 and always found the information here very helpful!

Sadly some idiot smashed into my car when it was parked outside my house and the s3 is now dead :(

No clue what I should get next as was planning on keeping the s3 for a few more years at least. It was a 2001 amk and only covered 105k miles - bodywork etc was in mint condition too!

So now I'm trying to decide whether I want another 8L or if I spend a little more and get an 8P this time around? Or move away from audis altogether? I just don't know!

Anyone got any suggestions or experiences to help me figure out what to get next?

Cheers,

Mark

Gutted for you pal..is it not repairable?

If it's a write off I hope you get what it's worth ...

Did you have any plans for the car? Like tuning... if the 8L is what you know and love, it could be a waste to leave it behind :)

Not wanting to be insensitive here, but is anything salvageable from it? pm me ;)

I don't think a repair is on the cards - the radiator was pushed through to the passenger wheel arch and the front bumper, bonnet, passenger wing were all trashed. I couldn't even open the bonnet to see what like under was cause of the way it was smashed :(

I'm still waiting to see what the insurance say though - not sure what I'll get offered for it. Probably not much I suppose. What makes it more annoying is I just forked out £600 getting the timing belt, hydraulic tensioner and water pump done a few months ago! Money completely wasted.

Haha, as it stands I don't have access to the car atm! If I'm able to get any bits off of it I'll make a new thread in the for sale section.

If they write it off could always buy it back .. keep parts as spares and sell the rest and scrap the shell... if u go down the 8l route again that is

Did you love your 8L? If so, but another, plenty about, but pay a little more for a decent one, loads of dogs about.... if you want something newer, and quicker out the box, buy an 8P. Of course there are other options out there, depends on what you are after?

Well I just test drove a sprint blue 2010 8p S3 - I don't think they're that much faster than the 8L to be honest. Fairly expensive but the interior is nice and it had a few nice options like the sat nav, Bluetooth, two tone leather seats and was also low miles at 20k with a full dealer history.

Might try and find one that's been mapped to see what like they are with a little extra oomph...

I think I'll stay away from another 8L as mine was so good and didn't really give me much hassle. I'm worried if I bought another one it might not be the same and end up ruining the memory of the first one!

Still waiting to see what the insurance company will give me for my car too - an 8p might still be a total pipe dream if I get pennies back for my car :(

8l. They look better on the out side. Not much slower than the 8p and have greats seats that are elec. Newer S3s just don't offer that.

8l are going up in price, 8p are getting cheaper... the 8l is getting more retro and the 8p needs to go through the 'another old audi stage' yet!-) no brainer, buy a good 8l and throw some cash at it, get it rodded and hybrid it up bey!

same money spent a clean 4k 8l with 6k in the engine? what would you get, probably a freshly built tuffty setup around 400bhp if your handy with a spanner and snap up some ebay deals!!! so is a mapped 8p quicker (about 10k), same money I don't think so...
you can have another mapped 8p or a top ten on audi sport-net 8l... big turbo, blue haldex, freshly built stroker engine, supertech valves ect ect...
could even buy a cheap mk4 golf 4motion, r32 kit and your s3 interior, your engine rebuilt... that's what I would be considering as I love the r32's look a little more than s3's but that's just me.

I hadn't even considered an r32 to be honest - they do sound awesome though. A guy I work with will be selling his one soon too for a house deposit... The only problem is they're that bit more difficult to get any extra horses out of them.

I really loved my 8L - even though it was near 15 years old she still looked good and tbh in the 4 years I had her apart from a couple of shocks and the timing belt/ water pump needing changed it never caused any issues.

They do look a bit dated now though if I'm being honest, although the same can be said for the 8P now to an extent.

Still undecided really, and also still waiting to hear back from my insurance company over whether they're writing the car off and if so how much they're gonna cough up

Mine was written off earlier this year too. A benchmark for insurance quote if it helps...for 85k and full Audi history in mint condition they paid out £6500 after much disagreement lol. I used other car prices from auto trader etc for similar cars to push them up. I hope you find what you're looking for as a replacement, I bought another well looked after s3 8l and couldn't be happier.

Did well to get an insurance company to cough up £6500, good work !

Wow, that's impressive! I got an offer yesterday... It was nowhere near £6500! They offered me £2700 and were surprised when I said for me to buy another one in the same condition (106k miles, facelift, immaculate bodywork and heavy service history) was gonna cost at least £4000 -£5000.

So I sent over a bunch of the most recent service history showing I've spent over a grand on the car this year since March, and that for me to buy a replacement it would need to have had timing belt and water pump done within the last 3k miles, 4 new tyres within the last 3k miles, haldex and engine oil changed within the last 5k and have no scratches or scrapes. And also it would need to be a facelift model with under 110k. And within reasonable travelling distance of me haha.

Also does anyone know what happens with private plates? The guy at the insurance company asked me if I wanted to keep it and said there's obvs the retention fee. Why should I pay to put the plate on retention when it was some dickhead who crashed into my parked car? Or do they send a separate cheque to cover that cost?

I'm not sure whether it makes that much difference if you told them you spent loads on recent servicing in order to get a bigger payout. I tried this years ago on a similar write-off/claim and they were simply not interested, but judging from the post by "sssline" you may be lucky and get more.

I'm actually intrigued on how the hell an insurance company paid out 6.5K for an 8L with 85K - was that an 03 plate?. Please let us know which insurance company so we can bear them in mind when renewing.

You can get a guaranteed value insurance policy for classic cars - these are nearly in that area

Gap insurance from flux is a good idea, makes up the difference the insurance company give you.

GAP is probably more applicable isn't it - the thing is an insurance company can only go by average cost and has no idea why your one might be different / worth more, they usually negotiate a little on price though - maybe worth taking out a policy where they obtain the car for you rather than cash - then they might see how far 2.7K goes to getting a good S3 - I bought a bad one and that was 3K - the equivalent in showroom was about 4.5. I am sure these will hold their values now as long as kept neat and tidy.

For future reference in case this happens to anyone else I got a revised offer of £4200 which I was a bit happier with and accepted.

Car was a 2001 "51" with 106k on the clock, bodywork in great condition apart from a couple stone chips and a little bit of bubbling starting to appear where the roof meets the rear quarter.

I think I'll definitely be looking into gap insurance for the future, just in case.

Hi,
If anyone would like a quotation for insurance that offers the option of a fixed agreed value please feel free to drop me a line.
We can off any agreed value on pretty much any car as long as it's over 12 months old.
Regards,
Dan.
