My new a4 has problems

Audi call that the torque reaction mount. Americans call it the snub mount. Replaced mine on 2.5tdi a few weeks ago. It's there to reduce the amount of engine lift going on and off throttle. The 2.5tdi one is a wee piece of foam basically, better to replace it with a b5 rs4/diesel one.

No I doubt it. Mine was shot and made no noise, just the lift is better controlled now so it's not so juddery on take-off.

If his there at all. pretty sure if it was metal on metal it would make such noise.

A clunking metal on metal maybe, can't imagine it'd be the cause of the bearing type noise unless the entire engine/gearbox is moving so much as to cause alignment issues in the drivetrain somewhere. In which case I'd say ALL the mounts are shot.

It would only take 1 mount to be knackered to move...Its doing it with no wheels moving. its under load/clutch bite.
its common for the bottom plate of the mounts to snap, and both at the same time.

Instead of just saying it cant be that, lets rule it out..check it atleast.

Granted, not trying to dismiss anything out of hand - just relating my findings from having replaced mine. They are easy enough to see jacked up, not too difficult to change either.

Looking at the video of being driven and the noise, idicates bearing, but if its doing it stationary then either somethings touching sounding like a bearing issue or its something internal.but what could do that, when steering wheels turned left...thats why i thought mounts.as turning left wouldnt cause anything internal to make that noise. if that all makes sense....DMF clutch r bearing but they wouldnt be brought on by being turned left by the the steering wheel. Its driving me mad now lol

Anyone would think you were looking for more Audi's to play with Ross!

Can't see this video on my phone, must have a butchers when I get home.

Just trying to be helpful.ive got enough of my own problems that im yet to post lol.
seems to be a money pit,i was looking at new cars last week until VW fiddled with those tests.

Fix mine, then I'll help to fix yours haha....

Another thing I notice, is that the grinding noise does not get faster with engine or car speed, just the faster you drive the more torque applied means it happens more constant... Turn the wheel to the right and it completely Disappears

Also, the only thing that could cause internally when turning is inward/outward force from the drive shaft, turning left pulls the drive shaft, turning right will push the drive shaft (obviously only the right one, will be opposite on the left shaft...

Check your subframe hasnt shifted, check the bolts too.

Yeah I'm going to get under it again 2moz... It's ine of things that's either going to be something major or something stupid lol

Ive got a similar issue with bad vibration under load. i pulled out of a junction and noticed a car coming quickly behind so i had to boot it or get shunted...vibration has gone now, thanks i said as i waved the V's to the pratt that nearly killed us.
But i no have a clunk when braking,so somethings a miss...ive taken my locking nuts off and replaced with bolts as its quicker to remove the wheels...i know exactly how you feel.

sub frame looks all good, bolts up tight, i need to fine some way of causing the noise while under the car..... idealy a 4 post ramp but only lift one side so it replicates a hill lol

Could be rack groaning ,disconnect track rod end and swivel the wheel left to right make sure you haven't got tight top or bottom ball joint, also once you have done that leave trackrod end off and start the car and turn steering see if noise goes!.

the only way to see if noise goes is to drive it lol so wont be able to test that, besides, cant see that being torque related?

noise is getting worse than ever now, i am starting to think it could be a mount or arm or bush.....

silly question, but can someone try and rock their engine by hand and tell me how much it moves.....

Just given mine a giggle (2.5tdi like yours) and all I'm doing is rocking the car. It's sat on two new passive mounts and a new gearbox mount and there's no movement at all.

Thanks mate, I can rock my engine a little side to side, didn't know if it supposed to move a bit

So..., got her on the ramps, probs about 2 or 3 mm travel on engine mounts and the gear boxmount, well, its not really there anymore think i may need to change it haha so going to do all the mounts together, is it true that a b6 rs4 mounts will fit this? I dont want those stupid electro mounts

I replaced both my active engine mounts with regular rubber mounts - Febi part number 22958. I got the pair for £60, compared with somewhere in the region of £200 each for active mounts.

You will find that idle is slightly rougher with the solid mounts as the active ones soften up at engine idle.

For the front engine (torque reaction/snub) mount I believe the B5 RS4 or B5 tdi version is the one to have. The B6 V6 tdi one fitted to our cars is just a piece of foam!

Can these be inserted in to the existing electro mount housing? My mate sent me this from his parts listing on etos

This is the engine mounts...

Old active hydro vs new solid rubber. The mount on the left of your pals collection is the gearbox mount...

Yeah the one on the left is the one I have got, just sourcing the 2 side mounts and the snub mount now

Get the solid rubber mount from the Passat to replace the foam snub mount. You get a little bit more vibration on setting off, but it won't fall to bits like the standard one.

Are the engine mounts sided or are they the same for both side?

Same on both sides. The Febi description reads for LHS but they are the same.

It is different, but with a bit of warm water and some lube it fits fine.

Well who would of thought that a gearbox mount will cause so much trouble!!

Problem is now fixed, gearbox mount had completely seperated which meant that when I took a corner the gearbox lent and the inner metal part was grinding on the subframe cross member!! The bracket is in a bit of a state, got a crack all the way through it, so need to get one of them, but it's back to gether and drives like a totally differnt car!

Thanks for all your help guys, couldn't have done with out you!
