Weird noise on startup and shutdown

When starting up I get a almost farty/grind noise only while starting then the car is fine but then when i turn it off its as though something is still spinning and then stops with a little clunk/fart any ideas anyone?? Oh car is a 1.8t 190 04 I'm also getting orange oil can light with the word SENSOR every now and then not sure if this is related but oil level is fine any advice would be appreciated thank you
 
First you need to check in sump,check oil pick up is not blocked very very common, I used a small fiberoptic camera.If that's OK I would check service history and see if cam chain tensioner has ever been changed, should be changed at a max of 80k , if not change it.Any chance of a vid of the car making the noise?

If oil pick up was blocked would I not get the red can ( had that couple of years ago and had strainer replaced) car runs smooth as anything whilst running too
 
If the pick up is partially blocked the oil pressure drops which causes can chain tensioner to not function properly as it relys on oil pressure to operate vvt,but if you had it replaced then it should be OK.The tensioner should have been changed at the same time as it will have been damaged by lack of oil,how many miles are on the car?
 
It's done 97000 ish think I'm going to book it in and get it all flushed just to be on the safe side thanks for replying
 
Change the tensioner! Do you have vcds? If so go into engine then mvb and watch ignition timing and report back with what it says.
 
Had timing belt and waterpump done about 2 weeks ago would it of been done then ??
 
Check your bonet cable isn't rubbing on your a\c fan under the bonet, common thing when the front has been off for a belt.should be clipped in under the air intake pipe.
 
Ok little update found a hole in big breather off the top of the oil filter housing, this has been changed now and the noise is cured, still getting the oil sensor light at random maybe once every couple of days and only for a few seconds, codes that came back were to do with the dash pod and not the sensors I will try to get hold of the actual codes
