Hi All.
Tried starting my car to go home from work and all I heard was a 'crunch' and now all it does is turn over..
A qualified VAG mechanic who works across the road linked it up and it showed no faults, but he said it looks as if the timing chain has slipped and probably bent the valves(apparently quite common on TSI model engines??).
Will be phoning My local Audi Dealer tomorrow and see where it takes me regarding any warranty/good will gestures etc...
The car is a 2.0Tfsi Quattro on a 10 plate with 73,000 mls.
Bought from main dealer April 2014 with approx 65,00mls full dealer history..
Any one had any probs like this? made any claims on this fault?
Any advice appreciated...:sos::crying:

gonna keep an eye on this one.
Just gone into Audi today. They will be doing a warranty inspection on it as soon as they can and then send findings to Audi uk to see if they will cover any/part of cost to repair.... Lady at my local dealer says due to age of car (5years)and mileage with full history there is a good chance there will be some sort of goodwill gesture. Fingers crossed:sadlike: Will let you know how I get on.....Paul

see what they offer as goodwill , as my brother owns an indy garage ,they get cars shipped from all over the country ,even ireland to fix .most from dealerships .

may be cheaper to get it done privately and they offer 2 year warranty on all parts as they only use genuine vag parts ,unless specially requested otherwise by owner.

Hmmm, watching this with interest knowing how slippery Audi (and other manufacturers) can be.

Good luck.

If the cam chain tensioner has lost oil pressure it will enable the chain to jump a tooth or so and as you say damage valves and pistons. It's becoming a common problem on the TFSI especially those with oil related problems!
It will be pretty much a new engine unfortunately mate...
There's been lots of discussion on it in my sticky thread in the A4 B8 forum.

Update......
Just had the dealer call me with an update on my car.
They have asked for a verbal go ahead on stripping the engine cylinder head down.Stating Audi uk will only consider any goodwill gesture if they know what is damaged and what has caused the damage.
Fair point I thought until she told me the labour cost could be as much as £600.(9 hours of work estimated):wtf:
They have me over a barrel so I had to say yes for them to carry on...
So that's it for now...
Not looking forward to what's coming :sadlike:

a new block wont be cheap especially direct from audi . can see it been into a few £k just on your contributions.

Hi hollow.
I will have to wait and see what they come back with?
Either way they in theory have upto £600 from me to investigate the fault, so going to an indy garage afterwards might not make good financial sense if you know what I mean..

Hi Mike j.
Don't I know it mate..
Spent a few hours last night on the web reading up on all sorts of horrible stories....

I have read on line it could be as much as £6,000 on a complete engine.......

Does the timing chain need replacing on these engines at some point? Is it a chain rather than a belt? I know on mine the service interval states something like 75k or 5 years whichever is sooner.

Hi Pluves1.
From what I understand the newer TSI engine(dipstick on the left hand side of engine not at front) have a timing chain and the older engine(dipstick at front of engine) have a timing belt..
I don,t know what interval the timing chain requires replacing if at all?
As to the problem with my engine the mechanism that tensions the chain seems to have failed. It is a known problem with the new TSI engined cars throughout the VAG range from 1.2 right upto 2.0 ltr.
The part in question is an un-serviceable component and should last the lifetime of the engine?????? so I have been told.

Usual Audi hourly rate is £104 an hour if I rember rightly
Hi Rayner 1704.
According to the conversation I had with my local dealer they have budgeted 9 hours labour to strip engine down.
They wanted a verbal yes from me to carry this work out and said it probably amount to £600 which works out at around £66 an hour...
I,m expecting a phone call from them today with an update on what is damaged....

Thats cheap for a dealer, the last bill I had was 115 an hour from a dealer before price matching with locals came in.
I hope I'm wrong but I fear the worst for you moneywise

Hope it,s not a taste of things to come, but they still have not got back to me as to what,s wrong with the engine or what,s happening with Audi uk.....I had to phone them twice yesterday to find out what,s going on.Both times they told me they would phone back with an update. At the end of the day they phoned to tell me they would have a better idea what,s wrong with the engine tomorrow....It's now tomorrow and guess what.........No phone call.
Am I being too impatient or what? They have had the car since Tuesday morning....

Their probably trying to work out what contribution you may need to pay towards either a rebuild or most likely a new engine...

Hi Mike J.
If it's looking like a new engine what sort of contribution do you think I would be getting from Audi Uk?

Hi Mike J.

Depends on how much you negotiate with them..
Seeing as it has full main dealer service history and also purchased from them you may get it free or with a 'small' contribution. It is becoming a common failure on 1.8 & 2.0 TFSI engines so take the no prisoners approach if they try to point the blame...

Thanks mike.
Hope I don't have to fight too hard.
It's given my confidence with Audi a big blow.If you read my older posts you will see that this car has given me nothing but trouble since I bought it from Audi last year, new turbo, quattro prop shaft, discs and pads all round, new front end(bumper), coil pack, new sump(old one rusted thru). All done under warranty except the sump..I have only covered 9500miles since buying it, now 5 months out of warranty the engine is knackered...

Gutting mate! Hope Audi see you right though!! Not what you would expect from a premium brand..

With what,s happening with VAG at the moment I hope it doesn't effect their decision on giving me 100% goodwill gesture?

I wouldn't think so. If anything they need to create some positive news and please their customers! May even be that your in a better position.. Hopefully good news will follow soon...

Will keep everyone up to date.Cheers buddy..:salute:

Update..
Picked up courtesy car this evening and had a chat with the service manager.
He told me the engine is beyond serviceable repair.:sadlike:
All the exhaust valves hit the pistons and bent, the timing chain follower has snapped possible damage to bottom end and two cylinder bores are scored..All I did was start the car!
They have sent a report to Audi Uk and now I,m waiting for them to get back to me.(prepared for the worst, hoping for the best)
As stated in earlier post the car has had proper service schedules done according to Audi spec. All at main dealer except last interim service (oil and filters) which used TPS parts(Audi approved) the car has covered 73,000 mls (9,500 of which since I have owned the car)..

Hi all.
It,s been a while. My local Audi dealer (The Point Llandudno) got back to me today with some very welcome news.....................
Audi Uk have offered a 90% contribution to the repairs to my engine totaling over £3500.
From what I gather they are not replacing the whole engine but are doing a complete engine rebuild.(will find out exactly what is being done tomorrow). As you can imagine I am very relieved:footy:It has restored my faith in Audi (well done Audi Uk:friends:)
While it,s in the workshop I have asked them to give the Dsg a service and also the Haldex.
Will it need a new clutch?(while the engine is out).
Any advise is appreciated Thanks Paul:yahoo:

Superb news
Cheers mate.
I have been dreading the news they have taken over two weeks to decide. I'm well chuffed with the outcome.
I have had the use of an A3 convertible(brand new) whilst they have had my car which is nice (in a hair dresser type of way lol)

what,s wrong with the engine tomorrow....It's now tomorrow and guess what.........No phone call.

Sorry but tomorrow never comesHaha

But thats good news man! Cant believe you only started it up and all that happend!

I know it was a bad week when it happened.First the vacuum cleaner went up in a cloud of sparks and smoke then the central heating boiler gave up the ghost and then my engine went 'pop'.
All I can say is if you have the ccza engine (2.0 tsi ) I would get the timing chain tensioner changed to the latest revision.(not sure what the part no. is will get some info from my dealer). It,s worth spending a few hundred quid getting it done than having the nightmare of replacing the engine.....I think I was very lucky with my 'goodwill gesture' from Audi...

Wow thats sounds...ermmm...interesting! Haha!

I have a 1.4 TFSI 09 plate and I'm not sure if mine is a timing chain or belt(need to research it tbh)but I'm having it replaced every 40'000 miles instead of every 60/70. Im also going to start checking oil seals as Ive seen these are a problem on the 1.8 and 2.0 but whats not to say there a problem on the 1.4.

Glad you got a goodwill gesture though!
