Driving the furious potato (our 6mo baby boy) up and down a quiet dual carriageway for an hour to get him to sleep. ACC on, 55mph, flat road, light wind, no traffic and still only 65.2mpg against a combined book figure of 65.7mpg (extra urban of 72.4mpg!?!)

Little bit surprised how far short of the book figures it still is as my car is presumably well run in by now.

Still, first world problems etc.

It's always the same with car manufacturers,

I have a 1.4 cod and they quote 67.3 extra urban. In like for like conditions to yours I've yet to better 55 and the urban doesn't come anywhere near to their quoted 44.8.

But then their tests are run in lab conditions, so what do we really expect :blow:

In fairness to Audi, the tests are standardised across all manufacturers in the UK (but there are some things the manufacturer can do to optimise the car for the test).

I don't think the figures should be taken as gospel but at least because the test is standardised it should give you an indication how it will perform compared to another car

I seem to remember a car advert from a good few years back where a father used a "getting the baby to sleep" excuse to spend more time driving his car.

Done a quick google search but could not find it. Anyone remember the advert and what car it was advertising?

hope the potato appreciates that awesome number!

Was this the one with the start stop and the baby would cry when the engine turned off?

The manufacturers figures are two pronged. 1. They are done under false driving conditions as mentioned above. More importantly 2. Because of this the Co2 emissions are extremely low thus you get lower road tax (at the moment).
Pay the price for less than the official mpg but get the significant benefits of unrealistically low Co2 that would never be achieved in the real world. Win one, lose one. I've had 74mpg out of my 1.6 tdi S-Tronic Sport on a flat slow motorway run. Also get more than that on my downhill run to my work in the morning but half it on the way back!!
