As title...is this possible or just a huge ball ache and a recipe for multiple busted knuckles?

The timing belt was only changed 35K ago (@ 70k) so ideally I'd just do the WP on its own.

I've never changed a WP (or timing belt for that matter) before but I'm reasonably confident it's something I'd be willing to tackle if I take my time...there's so many on-line resources now.

Sooooo.....could the WP be changed without removing the whole front bumper?

If not...what's the book time for doing the whole job? Having carried out loads of other DIY jobs from engine mounts to springs to control arms my DIY timings seem to be spot on with the book times. Basically I want to know if I can get this done on a Sat morning!

Nope, the crankshaft damper need to be removed in order to take the belt cover and to get to a few bolts however timing does not get disturbed. The viscous fan also needs removing and with the bumper/lock carrier in place space is very tight. It might be possible if you take alternator off but i am sure it won't be easy and you definitely need small hands !

So on further reading the water pump may be the external type. I should have mentioned that it's a AJL engine which is I believe is exactly the same as the AEB.

Any further guidance?

Put the front end in service position and do it properly. It will take 15 mins to take the bumper off and move the front panel.

So...you're all correct...the bumper took maybe 25mins to completely dismantle and the timing belt had to be removed to provide access to the water pump. I also installed a new thermostat and coolant sensors.

The old plastic water pump was spinning on it's shaft so a new metal one was installed.

All done though and learnt loads. All in all it took just over 5 hours start to finish...way longer than I thought but it's the first time I've had the front end of any car so happy with the end result. I also had to re-do the coolant as my first attempt to get the lower rad pipe back on failed miserably and it dumped within 100yards. :flushed:

Thanks for all the help...the DIY threads were all very good.
