Hello all I have a transmission problem that I hope you can help me with, 52 reg audi allroad 2.5 v6 tdi tiptronic.

It all started after I left the car sitting for about 6 months due to finances, all was fine before but when I started her up the PRND on the dash light up completely red, as I selected reverse there was an almighty clunk like something hadn't aligned properly, now sometimes when I pull off it stays in the same gear rather than change up, I have to stop the car and turn it off then back on and hope it then works.

I have took it to a local mechanic who has sent me a message saying "research these: code 17090 transmission range sensor (f125) implausible signal p0706"

can anyone shed any light on this please as I was about to put the car up for sale but can't in its current state.

Thank you in advance for you help.

Below is the Wiki.ross-tech.com page for that code. As ever check out the cheap/easy possibilities first.

17090/P0706/001798 - Transmission Range Sensor (F125): Implausible Signal
Possible Symptoms
  • No Reverse Lights
  • Engine will not start
  • Incorrect Gear Selection
  • Gear Indicator Display (PRNDL) may be flashing
Possible Causes
  • Gear Selector Cable incorrectly adjusted
  • Transmission Range Sensor (F125) faulty
  • Wiring and/or Connector(s) from/to Transmission Range Sensor (F125) faulty
Possible Solutions
  • Adjust Gear Selector Cable
    • Check Measuring Value Blocks (MVB)
  • Check/Replace Transmission Range Sensor (F125)
  • Check/Repair/Replace Wiring and/or Connector(s) from/to Transmission Range Sensor (F125)
Special Notes
  • When found in 6-Speed Automatic Transmission (01J/Multitronic), the Transmission Range Sensor (F125) is part of the Transmission Control Module (J217)!
    • Check Measuring Value Block (MVB) 002 for Plausibility
    • Check all four Hall Sensor(s) / Magnets
    • Check Selector Shaft Magnet(s) for Damage
    • Check/Replace Transmission Control Module (J217)

Quick update:

Having spoken to my mechanic friend we have both surmised that its simply too much of a coincidence that the interior got wet and now this problem has surfaced, we both decided it would be a good idea to check the gearbox ecu (passenger floor) for signs of water damage (he phoned audi and they mentioned it was quite a common problem with my model, I'm then going to send it to these guys :http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/390776981780?_trksid=p2060353.m1438.l2649&ssPageName=STRK:MEBIDX:IT to test it and if found to be faulty repair it also (audi want something like £850+VAT for a new one), and if that isn't the problem as you suggest start with the easiest/cheapest fixes first.

Wish me luck!

Their pretty well known to the Mk1 TT DSG population and did the tests on my VP44 ECU. Not sure but think they also did the Wheeler Dealer dashpod on TV.
Oh and LUCK!

Haha, you didn't mention water in your original post! A couple of points though: The module under the passenger side footwell carpet is the CCM (convenience control module) controlling central locking, alarm etc. The gearbox control module is under the drivers side. Certainly it's a lot more common for the passenger side to get flooded for a number of well documented different reasons.
Also, whilst I'm sure ecu testing are very capable of repairing your module, that link is for the control module for a CVT Multitronic gearbox; quite different from your Tiptronic, torque converter 'box as fitted to all quattros.
