So my a3 ended up getting a rebuild for the dreaded oil issues. All going well in that area.......only done around 600 miles, and it's developed an odd knock. right sided, sounds like it's near the rear of the engine bay

It only ever makes it when accelerating, it's a single knock, but will do it in first, then again in second, again in third, but not after that. from tickover in 2nd it makes the noise just as it comes onto boost.

had a good look over the suspension etc, nothing obvious. doesn't do it under load whilst stationary.

any ideas????

Is that the dogleg ( bottom of subframe)

if so, it seems to be ok, minimal movement in the bush when under load/stationary.

driver side mount looks ok, no gap in the bracket or anything. It's a solid clunk, and I can't replicate it with steering/cornering/braking regardless of how agressive I am.......

Can u torque the engine while stationary (parking brake in and foot on brake) by lifting clutch in gear. You want to do this with some snap to identify a failing reaction link.

I've been relatively gentle with the stationery torquing, owing to new clutch that's probably only just bed itself in.

I'll go try harder......watch this space.

Right then. I've made it do it whilst stationary. had to very nearly stall it from 3k to do it.....

key is : it'll only do it once in first, then if I load it in reverse, it'll then do it again in first.

so that's pointing to something just being loose right?

a quick bit of photography, and its diagnosed : loose top mount.[photo=medium]6168[/photo]

Some torx screws were loose and one was missing from my rebuild around the bumper area, however not as bad as that mate..
I had another Audi dealer double check everything that was non internal after the rebuild when it had its recent free service...

i think there is an oil leak too, at the bottom side of the block, timing end.

I'll try and get it booked in................

Soooo

new bolt/nut for the mount.

oil leak diagnosed as crankshaft oil seal.

also spotted a leaky thermostat housing, which is odd as it had a new waterpump a month ago.

High rpm whistle diagnosed as a nicked o ring in a intercooler.

buy an audi they said.........it'll be fun, they said.
