Build Thread JMR S3 Sportback Daily

Hi Alex,
They appear to be offering black now, unless of course my natural charm had them offering what I wanted before they could decline . Am hoping for the usual USA customer service and as you rightly say, it often surpasses that of our own. The Aquamist technology is fantastic and engineered beautifully. Am looking into sequential injection for it, but initially it will be rigged continuous. I am going to fit Aquamist system onto my Corrado as well and this will be sequential as is the fuelling, controlled by the Omex 710 ECU. Nitrous I played with back in the late 80's on my MK1 Scirocco Storm. It was a lot of fun running two stage NOS system I imported from the States. I think I've done the nitrous thing for now and am looking at less aggressive power for the S3. My Corrado however is the real

I've never had nitrous on the cars, but it must be fun.

I'm still learning about the ECU,and realising how much more complex it is than the factory one.....also not sure I'm brave or daft enough to try fiddling with it.....Storm and Syvecs both say it's easy enough(and practically speaking it is in the sense that it's already got it's ethernet port and the software is open access) but I think I may just leave that one.....

I think you and I share a liking for well engineered shiny things, and I'd love to see that Corrado.

I need a few things sorting out,one being easy with the lean trip on the car being too easy to trigger, and then maybe looking at increasing the WMI flow rate(mine is injected below the TB),but also to look at a bigger TB,and MAF.

I think you've got not only the facilities, but the attention to detail to turn out a really good package, and one that a number of people can benefit from

******, we all spoke too soon ref my Integrated Engineering order. Both the cam cover and breather kit are on a minimum four week order. Guess that me having to practice being patient again, too date I've not done well at this . All the optimistic, glass half full folks now say, " you have something nice to look forward to". Way i see it is, have found the issue, researched the resolve, located the right kit, need it on the car now

I'm not terribly patient either but at least you know you'll be getting the best parts.

Pardon me but I'm not very big on engine mods but how does an engine get so many deposits like this?

The TFSi breathers all dump into the inlet at various points.

As there is no petrol washing the valve stems thanks to the direct injection system, this is the result.

Blimey, so no getting away from this issue? Common fault then? Can't do the airflow and efficiency much good.

How is this rectified?

Sorry for the '20 questions' and thread high jack. Are there other threads on this topic?

After a bit of Internet searching the term is commonly known as 'Audi black lung' didn't realise this was such a problem.

Thanks for bring to my attention

One of the services that we perform at JMR is de-carbonising these direct injection cylinder heads. We have specialised equipment that allows us to blast clean away the carbon build up, using a harmless synthetic media. The equipment allows the media to be directed to specific areas whilst the waste is vacuumed out simultaneously. Any remaining media is dissolved out of the port afterwards with another harmless solution. The whole job is completed with the cylinder head in situ and the only component to be removed from the engine is the inlet manifold which gives access to the inlet ports and valves. This is a great bit of kit because it allows this job to be performed without having to carry out a full cylinder head removal and conventional de-coke. Furthermore no harmful or corrosive chemicals are used in this process making it totally safe to all other areas of the vehicle and the technician. If you are interested in this service we are always happy to here from new clients.

Sometimes I even bewilder myself with my own impatience. Not content in waiting for the IE breather I have bought and fitted a Forge breather catch can system as an interim measure. I must really want to keep those inlets clean

I will sell this on later when I fit the IE breather and cam cover. Any takers

Looking good already.

I'm sure it will help a bit, especially while the car isn't being driven too much, and Forge parts always feel good on the eye anyway.

I remember my car being laid up for 3 months waiting for rods a few yrs back and that was hell....

Alex, I am going up to AITP Aug 9th are you going to be there?

I would love to,but I have a huge workload the day before so it may be impossible if anything spills over.

May have to play it by the day

News today from Integrated Engineering, but not what I wanted to hear . Having waited the four weeks they quoted for delivery on my black billet cam cover and breather system, they are now quoting another four weeks .
On the good side, I have got all the parts now for my Aquamist WMI install. So I can now get busy with fitting this. As the final part of my IE disappointment therapy, I ordered today my hybrid Turbo, extra BHP always guaranteed to raise ones spirits .
Pics will follow soon of installation.

Sure it will be worth the wait mate. Ive been thinking of putting a hybrid turbo in my 2.0 tdi quattro, but that would also mean uprating the clutch and then the costs just skyrocket lol. Would be very fun driving a 270bhp diesel though haha.

Surely the argument to proceed with the upgrade is that the clutch was a casualty of wear and tear and the turbo just had to be done

. In allay tears of performance dilemma, BHP wins every time
emoji6.png

Well mate, i think my DMF is on its way out and clutch had been slipping under heavy acceleration since my remap. Now to find the money for a big turbo and uprated clutch that can handle close to 550nm of torque. I can just imagine flooring it at the lights leaving a huge cloud of diesel smoke haha.

Might be a build thread on the horizon soon! Just need to look at the old wallet first lol

Just a question re your choice of tyre sizes.
Are they both the same overall diameter? If not I would be concerned re further haldex wear and abs hiccups?

haha I was thinking the exact same mate!! One thing I REALLY wish they had over here (n.ireland) is someone to do the de-coking of the valves. I have asked around but no one is really interested. It looks like I might have to make a road trip to the mainland for this particular service.

To the OP - where abouts is your garage at mate? And could you give a rough cost for performing the de-coke service on my 2009 s3?

Amazing thread by the way, that purple diff looks the biz!!

Pants. Pretty much as far away from me as it can be then, within the UK.

Take the other half for a weekend away in Brighton? Sure you can find some excuse to do it just think of the drive back!

The minor nominal difference in rolling circumference poses no issue to any aspect of the transmission or or indeed the ABS. Have run numerous VAG vehicles with this type of configuration for years without a single issue.

Sorry I have not been on the forum lately to see your post, although it very much looks like I owe Andy a beer token for his keen attention to unpaid salesmanship .
As said we are based in West Sussex, littlehampton. The suggestion of a trip to the Sunny South is always a possibility and we can even extend you the use of our loan car to enjoy your stay.
Ref the costing on your S3 de-coke, the typical cost of this is £208 plus vat. This allows us to use 1 litre of synthetic blasting media per cylinder which is sufficient for typical carbon build removal. The results we have with this new synthetic media are fantastic and there are no worries with stray particulate as this is dissolved with an inert solution, to leave only squeaky clean engineering. No acids or other harmful substances are used in this process, so no damage possible to other components is assured. The blasting media is not cheap so our system might be a little more than others, however the quality of this product is second to none. We tested this product on my own S3 and it passed my expectations and the results of previously product. Please give us a call if you need to discuss further.

So back to the build report.
The Aquamist HFS4-3.1 water meth injection install. This is now all but complete into my S3, just the final calibration to be done and Its finished. Here are some pics of the instal to date.

I'll take you up on that when I book in for the de coke.

Roughly how long does it take and how far do I need to book in advance?

Thanks

So You they remove inlet and clean or is it a treatment please ?

Thanks

Thanks

Our process involves the removal of the inlet manifold to allow direct access to the cylinder head inlet ports. Our cleaning syst involves no chemicals or treatments to the fuel etc, it is purely a mechanical blast cleaning process using a synthetic granular media, which is a progression of the nut shell media .

I hope you're as pleased with all that as I am.

The breather and cam cover does make a big difference, and for whatever reason, since swapping to Motul 300V,I'm getting far less muck blown into the catch can as well.

It's all getting there Alex. Just a few more tweaks and my objective with this project should built. I just wish IE would get their finger out and stop giving me redundant delivery expectations.

Not sure what the problem is,but they were superfast for my deliveries.

We had huge problems a few years back with piston and rod delivery times(not from IE),which seemed to coincide with every other supplier having problems too.

I expect in IE's case they may produce the cam covers as batch orders as they're all billet stock...
Whatever it is,I know you'll like the finished product.

For sure I'll like the kit Alex, it's the waiting that I'm appalling with. I was kind of ok with the quoted 4 weeks, but then to be told another 4 weeks after that killed me.

I know how it feels....if it's any consolation I waited 4 months, with my car in bits for the internals.

Got news today from the Good ole USA, my IE cam cover and breather kit is on its way to Blighty! Yay at long last!! Only a few more days to wait now before I can finish the engine work.
In the mean time I bought a new tool to remove and install all VAG running gear bushes, and have just used it to change the rear subframe mount bushes on my S3. Here it is in action.

All four bushes fitted in a trice, fantastic piece of kit.

Just need to re-fit parts removed for access, and carry out four wheel alignment, job done.
