Hi guys, basically I'm looking at getting an Audi A3.

Been checking the insurance & the 170 Quattro & non-Quattro seems to be fine and also the 140 Quattro but the 140 Non-Quattro seems to be so expensive compared to the other 3.

These are 06-08, 2.0L TDI

Any ideas why?

Many Thanks, Danny.

Statistically they probably have more crashes and write offs in the 140 non quattro so its pricier to insure.

Insurance groups are completely different from how it used to be. Insurers will also take in to account the brakes and quattro giving better grip. I insure my a3 v6 with modifications declared as my main car and our 1.6 Picasso as the second car because the Audi is cheaper to insure despite having over twice the power and being over 3 times the value!

But surely if that was right then the 170 Quattro would be more than the 140 Quattro which it's not?

As in the first reply they will also look at which car is involved in more accidents. Do the 140 & 170 have the same brakes?
Really wouldn't know tbh.

Quite weird tbh, if I run a quote with the insurance I am with now on the 140 non-Quattro it comes up with an error.. Any of the other 3 and its fine.

Why not just run a quote with 140, 170, quattro and non-quattro on one of the comparison websites? Everyone's circumstances are different, premiums depend on postcode, age, NCB, etc.

Yes I have done.

The 140 Quattro and 170 Quattro and non Quattro always come back cheapest on my current insurance but the 140 non Quattro doesn't.

no 140 quattro a3 always a 170 . ive just gone from an 09 quattro 170 to a 2012 non quattro 170 black edition and insurance has dropped

Maybe the clutch was slipping?

They definitely made a 140BHP Quattro as I saw a few before purchasing my 170. In regards to the over reving was it doing that when you were using the throttle? Revs increasing on heavy throttle with no speed increase indicates clutch slip.

If you lived anywhere near me I wouldn't mind letting you take a look at mine.

What does over rev mean?

Like you couldn't change gears quick, if you did it would just rev up, like I said did the same in the golf.

Audi a3 tdi quattro sport 140bhp

I had a vectra that used to do what you describe , held the revs for a second when you came off the throttle ? So going up through the gears was awkward ...

At that price and year with those miles i think i'd be looking at something slightly newer, less miles, possibly a 170 TDI

Should I be worried about buying 100k-110k mileage A3? As long as the cambelt has been changed?

100k is nothing as long as it's been looked after...the turbos on those older engines are made of chocolate though so I'd be really listening out for it during test drive.

Regarding the gear change, mine is DSG so can't comment on the manual box.

If cambelts been done youll be fine, mines on 122k, turbos still ok (had it remapped 4 months ago). When looking for mine I saw a few on autotrader with 170k+ miles!

A few things to keep in mind with the 170

Youll probably want to remove the DPF and remap as they are nothing but trouble, this will be around 450/500 but totally transforms the car.

The 170BMN is a much much better engine than earlier BKD140s which had porous cylinder heads and crap turbos. They are the last revision of the PD 2.0 engine and as such most if not all of the issues with the earlier 2.0 engines have been resolved.

Thanks for that!

Well I'm looking at 06/07/08 years so think they're the PD engine? But yeah if I did get a 170 id get the remap and remove the dpf.

Just posted that one to prove they exist !

thats just a picture though , had an argument with some one on FB otherday telling me that they also made a 187bhp tdi on an o6 plate which the didnt .

never has been a 140 version quattro out of the factory .

Click the link , it is a car for sale , not just a picture ....

blind pal didn't notice the link lol . plus i do stand corrected ,seems it was an optional extra for just a few year from 2004 onwards face lift . i do apologise

to the OP though if you buy a quattro you'll find it hard to go back to a fwd later on . ive done just that and found that taking those lovely country lane bends etc are a little scarier than with a quattro , you can just plant the throttle and the car would just stick like it was on rails . bit wary now with just the fwd again.

They definatley did a 140 Quattro S-Line around 06 plate, i test drove one a few years ago at Truro Audi. Didn't realise how rare they were and didn't end up buying it!

Yeah afaik they were the only ones without DPF fitted as standard
