S3 was up against the Golf R, Megane Sport & Seat Leon SC Cupra.

Interesting test, probably one of the better/best they've done on 5th Gear and the S3 was in the best colour :tonguewink:

Just watched that. The tests they do are a bit pathetic, but I guess it came out well. I thought it was monsoon grey they tested (as I have on order). Looked lighter than Daytona.

If they tested which car makes other drivers (particularly those in low powered BMW 3 series coupes) drive like complete dickheads whenever they go near them, then the S3 will win hands down. Honestly, I've never known anything like it.

My 07 plate Focus ST was chav bait. The amount of bean-can-exhausted automotive chav jewellery that used to try and egg me on in that was immense.

Missed that show - when was it on ? See if I can get it on catch up. Or anyone got a link to the test ?

Maybe it's on catch up. The video isn't on their YouTube channel yet.

If anyone drives up my **** to try and push me I just go slower and slower...they soon get the message and I get more pleasure watching them get annoyed :D

That's funny, I've found every time I come up behind an ST it seems to transform them into flat out loonies.....

I wasn't your typical ST owner, obviously. I hope you're sat down to read this, but I also have the indicator pack on my BMW - and use them! :)

I might add I had the blue ST not the asbo orange. I never really had the problem of people driving up my backside to get me to go faster - it was mainly pulling up alongside on dual carriageway or motorway, trying to egg me into a drag race. I never obliged.

The most fun I do have is when in the left lane at a roundabout (predominantly on my regular A50 jaunts) and someone pulls into the right lane to pull away faster than me. I do enjoy surprising them with how quick I get up to speed and watch them in my rear view struggle to get back up to speed in the outside lane lane.

Drove to Herefordshire this evening. I have narrowed down the type of cars and drivers that the S3 brings out the worst in... Any BMW model where the badge ends "20D" and EVERY Audi A4 TDI that has ever existed.

Just watched it....

Hardly scientific, but the S3 gave a good show of itself!

Race at the end looked like good fun!

Not looked at any of the Golf R forums but I bet they aint happy!

Senna seemed to be a big fan of the Audi....

Just taken mine on its first long trip today, 325 miles into France and totally agree it's the dickheads above coupled with the French equivalent in Renault Clios and large Peogeot's that want to drive in your boot that ruined a good days driving.

My solution is to sit there on cruise at around135km/hr and soon as an open road ahead comes up knock down a gear or two and put my foot down and in a couple of seconds you are doing "stupid" km/hr with them a speck in the distance. I then take my foot off the gas pull into inside lane and go back to normal cruise and let them limp past you foot to the floor doing 140km/hr.

Seriously I am impressed at the straight line speed of the S3 and its acceleration and had it in comfort mode with three adults a full of luggage. Hope to find some nice twisting country roads for the second leg tomorrow.

I just watched it too, quite enjoyed it for a change. Was surprised by how close it was on the race, especially when u consider the Renault was a proper race spec with no rear seats and other bits stripped out and fancy tyres added, would gave been s different result if they had the "normal" version lol

You've done well to get across the Channel... poxy Operation Stack is really hacking me off now

Left at 8.30 for a 13.00 crossing. Usually takes 1 hour 20mins from m25 jct 25 via M20. Today went via M2 and B2068 and it took 1 hour 50 mins, which was better than I expected but then had to wait just over two hours to get on a train as ****** migrants had got in the tunnel yet again last night.

Welcome to the Shire. I feel sorry having to bring yourself here lol

Managed to find the time to watch it.
As you say - quite an interesting result given the objective of the Renault.
Also nice of them to do a test that didn't involve a powerslide challenge for once! :racer:

Was very strange to use the race spec version of the Renault. As for their process of elimination silly tests and also when there's less than a second in it for many of these tests if they tried again they could get different results each time (also using different drivers). I guess you're meant to enjoy the process and not really pay any attention to the result, but it was good to see Senna loving the S3.

So true. I hope you embarass them and leave them for dust :) You can always tell when they get mad because they will mash their foot down onto kickdown, turbo will spool and you will see that nasty diesel explode out the rear end.

I think these fifth gear tests are ridiculous to be honest. Like you say, very subjective results with different drivers which could result in a different time every time. They should at least get all of the cars to do all of the tests with a best of three like they did for the cornering, then total up the scores.

It would also be better to do a fast timed lap in each car, rather than a so called race with lots of staged overtaking. To be honest, they could have done test this in such a way that any of the cars could have won this. I don't see this helping anyone who wants to choose between any of the cars.

Brilliant thanks for posting it.
For me the S3 was the clear winner as the hot hatch.
The Renault as others have said was not a real hatchback in the sense of popping to Tesco, etc.

And why not test the 3 door S3? surely more of a comparison to the Leon and Renault....and quicker too !!

Man, that race at the end was epic! Great stuff. That Daytona Grey does look great on the S3 is has to be said, I like the way it shows off the wheel arches.

LOL, the Golf R knocked out in round 1 for not being agile enough - hilarious! Opinions and silly tests eh...

Yeah l do agree its a silly/non sensical test but nice TV, they done the same test about 3 YEARS ago with the Megane 265 cup/GTC VXR/Golf GTI/Focus ST and in the Agility test the golf was first out again, but in this test they used the same driver, Rallye driver Chris Meake,so IN TRUTH maybe the golf aint so agile.

l aint a believer of this Golf R.... Lovey thing.

Was it really Daytona? Looked lighter to me, looked like Monsoon.

Why don't they just send the trains through even if they are in the tunnel.
