Hi all,
I finally bought my first car which is an Audi a3 2.0TDI 54 reg.
I am just wondering if I made a mistake buying it.
The car has done 182k miles. The car has full service history, First 5 stamps are from Audi upto 93k miles then afterwards normal garages.
It has got receipts for a new turbo fitted in 2010, due to the old one overboosting and something to do with oil sump.
I just want to know if I maintain this car correctly will the car last me for a while despite the mileage? Like can these engines go over 200k miles?

I just want putting my mind at ease because I am panicing I made a mistake.
When the car is running idle. when the engine cap is open it gives a little bit of compression is this normal for a car of this much mileage? I know the compression can't be leading to head gasket symptoms as there is no white smoke from the exhaust at all and no milky oil when I take the engine cap off.

Any advice would be appreciated.

Get it serviced at Audi and get a scan mate...only way to put your mind at rest. Audi make bulletproof engines but expect you (previous owners) to take care of the car proper

Normal for "compression" when removing the cap it's a PCV system.

Engines are solid does yours have timing belt or chain?

Don't go to Audi for the scan or servicing. Anyone with VCDS can scan it and for servicing choose a good independent garage you can trust

It has new timing belt which was done on May 22nd, 1k miles ago.

You will be fine... should last long with proper care. milage is just a number on these engines.

is yours a BKD engine code?

Just started my car this morning the engine management light has come on the car does feel abit 'weaker' is it limp mode? I know I can't hear my k&n filter when im revving past 2k?

The turbo cant be gone can it? It had a new turbo in 2010. The only thing I done to the car was a oil change about 5-6 days ago

Get it scanned with VCDS. And you would not be able to hear your air filter in any case.

Get it scanned with VCDS, make a note of any fault codes, clear all the codes, drive it and then re-scan. Compare the codes you get this time with the ones you had previously to work out which ones are genuine faults and which ones are brain-farts of the ECU.

The engine management light has gone now after I finished work (only worked 4 hours) the car feels itself again. I will definitly get it scanned when it pops up again.
Off topic: because my car is high mileage I was wondering what is the best fuel? Regular or premium diesel.

Sorry for not keeping in touch. Finally got car scanned, The fault code reads P0236 - Turbo/Super Charger Boost Sensor "A" Circuit Range/Performance. Is it a minor sensor issue or a major issue which will cost a lot to fix?

- Boost pressure sensor harness is open or shorted
- Boost pressure sensor circuit poor electrical connection
- Faulty boost pressure sensor
- Faulty Turbo/Super Charger
- Engine over temperature
- Ignition misfire exceeds the calibrated threshold
- Faulty Knock sensor (KS)

Getting abit stressed out now. Just spotted another issue on the car. Was driving around and suddenly the coolant light came on. I quickly stopped the car and saw my car had none left! I spotted one of the pipes was leaking. Dunno if it is called the water pipe or coolant outlet pipe. I filled it back up with new coolant and water. Will get that looked at on Sunday or Monday

Can you take a picture of which pipe exactly is it leaking from?

This is a common symptom on BKD engines, if you aren't 100% sure that it's the pipe, then it could be a porous cylinder head or EGR cooler.

Same thing happened to me after I have bought the car, went through hell and back with this engine.

Hi, it is definitely that pipe because I saw water coming out of it. I have uploaded the pic, it is the pipe I am pointing to.

update: car is at garage at the moment. Bought new Tensioner, water hose ( the 1 that was leaking) and a new thermostat. Will see how the car is when I get it back tomorrow most likely. The tensioner was vibrating a lot on idle.

Early 2.0L TDI engines 04 to 55 suffered from cylinder head failure (porous).. Mine did, supped coolant like George Best supped ale.

I had to change that pipe on my car as a precaution as it had made bubbles and looked like it was away to burst. was only £23 from audi

Update: car sounds much better on idle with new tensioner and alternator belt. Shadow1993, I paid same price for the pipe from TPS so far so good, water level is staying put.

I've noticed clutch/flywheel makes kind of a grinding noise when im at biting point in neutral for example. I don't have to worry about that now right?

The car is a solid car. Mines on 127k no problems at all. As long you do regular services and thrash the turbo once in a while its a great car. Its also a very mode-able vehicle so you can have lots of fun with it.

I recommend you get a vcds diagnostic scan done to see if there are any underlying issues. Lots of people on here can do it.

Not too sure, but i have heard some horror stories of the flywheel shattering and taking out the gearbox? Maybe speak to someone who knows more?
