Hi everyone. I currently have a e46 330d, 232bhp. Took an A5 3.0 TDI Step tropic quattro out plus a 6 speed manual and loved them. I have spoken to Darkside Developments and they have said with tweaks 300+ is achievable and I am happy with the current power. The dealer and interior converted me. Initially looking for an e90 335d or 330cd but hate the BMW auto.
Loved the stronic and preferred it to a manual but am worried that the A5 only has 4 seats. I have 2 kids and am.a single Dad. But partner has a daughter which makes 5. So it will be impossible let to take all on days where she has her daughter and I have my twins. She has said she would be happy taking 2 cars and I could get her a TT cheaply but don't think that long term it is ideal. Plus who wants to take 2 cars everywhere... I have toyed with keeping mine and getting a TT as a toy, looked at a A4 cab 3v6 tdi quattro but again 4 seats... Don't like the Sportback... She's told me to buy the A5, my 330d is a 4 seater and we manage... But need help please...

Try the a4, its a great car with all the practicality and shares almost everything with the a5

Which A4 would you go for?
I like the A5 for style, power, economy, space, heated and electric seats, mirrors, quattro, satnav etc. Plus it has kerb appeal. The more I look, the more either a Sports back is the option or another BMW. Just an E46 newer 330cd 5 seater or e90 330cd hardtop. The A4 is very common where I live and I don't rate the interior like my BMW. The A5 however is full leather trim and a real showcase. A cockpit feel to it which is why I like it so much. I think the A5 is the way to go. Then get a TT quattro for her... In a 4 seater the mk1 is only a few thousand. So with my 13k I can get both the A5 for me and maybe a swap for my 330d M Sport for a nice TT quattro or just the 1.8t... I was hoping for owners opinions or alternatives. Real world power and mpg figures for Audi cars that cost around 10 to 13k or 10 for one and 3 for another....

I thought you could spec 5 seats for the A5

Only in the 5 door sports back. But to be honest think I am set on the A5 now. Going to try and find a full spec 3.0 v6 tdi quattro stronic.

As above the B8 A4 3.0 TDI Quattro has everything that the A5 has plus an extra rear seat. Yes it may lack some of the Coupe go faster looks but underneath the skin it's the same car. I would definately get it mapped to get the most out of it, And don't bother with Darkside if you are anywhere near Manchester.
Rick at Unicorn Motor developments would do a better job.
Have a look at the build thread for my car 312bhp and 720Nm gives you 5 second 0-60 and 40-45 mpg on a run. Runs 13.3 second quarter miles at 105mph and mine is an estate.

Cool thanks Carl. I have debated the estate, the reason for going with Darkside and the A5 was that it also has 244 standard apposed to the 233 of the A4. Making tuning that little bit easier. I had also planned on more than just a map. Not sure if the Audi 3.0 has an egr but I would delete that. Full decat and panel filter, then straight system to allow better breathing. After all that I would go remap and have even been debating hybrid turbo too plus larger intercooler. I figure about 2 grand should see 350 out the car reliably.
What year would I be looking at on a B8 A4? Starting to think a petrol would be the better option if not for the 100 mile round trip I have to do twice a week plus commuting for my kids.... Also are high milers ok like BMW? Or are they problematic? I have had an E46 330d go from 80k to 160k and need nothing more than normal services and a clutch. Current car has gone from 70k to 94k in 6 months...

Hi Karl had a look at your thread, seems really impressive and looks like you have done to yours exactly what I want to do to line when I get it. May get the A4. But looks may out and the A5 start g with slightly more may be a better starting point. Few questions does the stronic have the capability for 700nm? 350bhp Or am I limited to a manual? I ask as the gear changes are faster and for motorways it's easier with cruise etc...

Ok it appears the 6 speed stronic box will take around 650nm according to Audi. Any more and it's pushing it...

All diesels have EGR on them as part of the emissions, I have had mine disabled and blocked. The A4 and A5 have the same engines and same potential for tuning. There was a small change in output power on the facelift models as there were several changes to the engine including a change to a different turbo to improve efficiency but when tuned there is little in it.
You won't get 350bhp with a standard turbo, realistically speaking 320-325 bhp is as much as you can get out of them due to the restrictions on the turbine side. Any more and you need a hybrid turbo.
There are many tuned A5's in Europe with the DSG boxes and running 700NM plus but as you say you are then pushing it.
There is a very good Facebook site for tuned 3.0 TDI A5's https://www.facebook.com/pages/A5-qp-RS5-TDi/296843307053421
Have a look at some of the pictures and videos.

I really like the A4, the A5 in a diesel to me just isn't a good combination. I feel coupes should run and sound spirty (sorry it's just me). I run a b8 S4 on a 59 plate. Mine is totally standard, a manual 6 speed. They're quick and capable of 490bhp if you want to spend around £1500 on one and Audi servicing deals mean you can maintain them for reasonable monies now. The big downside is mpg is about 23 which you can now get out of much more powerful cars, also considering your commute that might be an issue. These things aside I just suggest you drive one. Whereabouts are you?

Well today I have been in an A4 Avant 2006, cabin felt dated but space in the back was ok, my main concern. Then tried an A6 All road, suspension was cool and fully loaded but man it was huge. Loads of space for everyone but it was like driving a bus, the thing even had heated seats in the rear. The weight concerns me. As does the handling. Especially after having a 3 series that corners like it's on rails...

Surely an A5 is a lot more money than a 2006 A4 Avant?
I have owned loads of BMWs including 335i touring and 535d touring as well as M3s etc.

I also owned a 3.2 A6 Quattro Avant, which I loved, bought it at under 2 years old with 13k miles on it from Peterborough Audi for £12k, when things went tits up in early 2009, with the intention of flipping it quickly, but kept it nearly 2 years.
I had a 3.0tdi for two weeks and although the initial shove felt quicker the 3.2 was quicker, more refined and about 4mpg behind the tdi.

I also had a 2005 S4 avant, which I hated with a passion.

I just picked up a 2006 2.0T A4 S-Line Avant for £4500, with 100k on it, which is why I wondered why you are looking at those with your budget?

If it were me I would look at a nice B8 A4 Avant, or a higher mileage C7 A6 avant? Handles so much better than the C6 A6 and very different from the allroad.

None of them will handle the same way as your BMW though, they are not designed to, they feel so different to drive. The latest versions are getting more similar, but the ones you are talking about are very different.
I actually loved my 3.2 Quattro estate so much because it was a bus, and I enjoyed it for what it was. Which is why I wasn't keen on my S4, I thought it was going to be sporty and it just wasn't at all, I actually prefer a mapped 2.0T over the V8 S4.

I just think you may be disappointed buying a 'sporty' Audi. Unless you have the budget for a B8 S4 or similar.

Looked at the Avant for space. Budget is about 7k minimum to 13k Max. Really don't want to spend more than 10k total. I would stretch to 15k for a car I loved like the A5. I also have found my mrs loves the 330d and apart from the snow I would think a 335d would be quicker than most things. Just yet to test one. Don't like the flappy paddles of the Beemer. Love the flappy paddles of the Audi. I would love a sporty diesel like the 330d. Day to day it's great 45 mpg less in the summer. TT pulls up next to me and I plant it and what's more she corners like a dream. Something none of the Audi cars I have tested have. My main reason is interior and winter. I want a good all round car. The only reason for looming at the above A4 and A6 wasn't price. But space in the back. But I couldn't live with the A6 daily way too big in estate and when compared vs a 535d estate the 5 series is a rocket sportier and seems to have more room. If winters weren't so bad in the UK. I wouldn't consider anything other than the BMW...

I always put winter tyres on my RWD BMWs and Mercs, I had to leave my A6 Quattro in the garage and take my wifes 123d sport out when it snowed a couple of winters back, I had a 90 miles round trip each day and the BMW did it with ease, it was on winter tyres.

I very nearly bought a 2010 F11 530d sport touring a couple of weeks back, it had 82k miles on it, but it was £14k and seemed like a hell of a lot of car for the money. But, since picking up this 2.0T S-Line I am now thinking that I may sell the A4 and the X3 and buy an B8 S4 and an old Disco or similar.
The 5 series interior is lovely imho, but then so is the C7 A6, also the C7 A6 feels a lot more nimble than the C6 A6.
