Basically was told my car struggles to get up to temp.

It sits around 78 degrees but will get Upto 86 on hotter days.

The mapper said could be temp sensor, or thermostat.

Where are these location and how hard are they to replace?

It's a s3 cdl engine.

Cheers

Mine sits around 75 and as far as I'm aware I think its the thermostat stuck open, I picked one up from Audi for £37 just need to fit mine

I would bet that the issues is the thermostat. If it is stuck open, engine coolant will circulate around the system and over-cool the engine. I bet that sitting in traffic will also result in temps creeping up slightly, but as soon as you drive off, it plummets again.

This was the exact issue I had on my S3 a few months back.

Bad news is that replacing the thermostat is a b*****d due to where it is located. Temp sensor is relatively easy to replace, but I bet its your thermostat that is the root cause unfortunately.

Yes its been replaced and solved the problem. I had a local Audi specialist do the work. Quoted 3 hours labour.

Including the thermostat, total cost was something like £215.

Replacing the thermostat is a pain of a job to do on this engine. I managed to do but it did take like 3-4 hours as the crap plastic hose doesn't go on very well!

Alternator needs to be removed which isn't hard but access is still tight.

Is it worth replacing anything else why removing the thermostat?
Should I buy other bits? Any bits that are likely to break/be worn?

Don't suppose you can write me a quick step guide? Eg remove engine cover, remove inlet, remove rad?

Not sure about other bits, but youtube has plenty of guides on how to do this -

Looks easy when you know how and have the right equipment to hand :)

Done this job on my a3 tfsi 2l axx engine myself, took around 3-4 hours, make sure you have all tools needed and also coolant ready in case you plan a flush if not just reuse but have extra..

My car would have lower to 70 engine temp when cruising and back up to 90 when in traffic..stuck open thermostat...

I used these...

Part 1-

Part 2-

And this as step by step:

As the GTI is same set up...

But yes it's a PAIN IN *** JOB!

VAG G12/13 - whichever it is
the generic "pink" (which is actually orange from memory) coolant from Halfords isn't the correct stuff.
From memory its about £13 a litre from vw for the correct stuff
