Yes yes I know, another RNSE question.

I've searched and searched but can't exactly find the information I'm after.

Car: 2004/04 S4 (B6)
Unit: Symphony, cassette with CD changer built into unit, double din, BOSE
No MFSW

Now in the future I'd like to replace the head unit with aftermarket and remove the BOSE and build my own system, and also fit a MFSW, but funds don't allow yet. So in the meantime I'd like to fit a RNS-E.

So I know I need the unit itself, and also a GPS antenna like THIS.

I've also read something about coding?

My main questions are:

Does the RNS-E allow for bluetooth music streaming?
Does the RNS-E have an input for reversing camera?
If I upgrade to a MFSW in the future, is there another cable required?
Is there any particular RNS-E that I need to be looking out for other than one meant for an A4? I've read something about a MK2 version.
Will the navigation directions show up on my trip computer screen between the gauges?

Thanks in advance.

Adam

answers to your questions:

Does the RNS-E allow for bluetooth music streaming? No, unfortunately without a third party device you cannot get this to work. (see below)

Does the RNS-E have an input for reversing camera? yes of sorts, not a conventional camera input but you can wire in an OEM reversing camera or get a multimedia interface box connected to the RNSE which will then give you a few video inputs and RCA inputs.

If I upgrade to a MFSW in the future, is there another cable required? no other cable is required to go to the RNSE, the retrofit for the MFSW will need a cable and a steering module though.

Is there any particular RNS-E that I need to be looking out for other than one meant for an A4? I've read something about a MK2 version. The MK2 is a newer unit with a better resolution screen and larger memory card support. The Mk 1 only accepts a maximum 4GB SD card per slot where as the MK2 accepts 32GB SD cards. Also supports the optional AMI kit which allows iPods, usb drives and bluetooth streaming with the use of a bluetooth dongle.

Will the navigation directions show up on my trip computer screen between the gauges? yes it should show up in the DIS providing you have a DIS that supports that feature.

Great knowledge, thanks Ash!

Looking at some prices since I posted this, sticking to the OEM look (which is what I want) is going to be pricey!

To get all the above features looks like it will end up costing circa £750. Can get an aftermarket unit to do the above for circa £500.

Maybe I'll leave it for a while :(

Exactly the same predicament I was in when I first bought my A3, ended up going for aftermarket as the interface of the RNSE really annoyed me and every add on was expensive.

I'd really like to keep the OEM look, but as you say, each add on is so expensive, and after all that the even the MK2 doesn't do full postcode sat nav.

Having seen the Pioneer in your old A3, that looks pretty good, almost tempting!

Yeah the Pioneer beats the RNSE hands down! they have the Nav version too which does everything my one did with the added Sat Nav. I didnt bother getting the nav version as i already have the full version tomtom on my iPhone with traffic updates which i already paid for and to be honest no other nav compares to it.

have a look around...i think the new one is the avic-f70dab which also has DAB radio and you can run apps from your phone to the screen.

I'd like DAB also, just to listen to 1xtra to be honest.

I think I'd go for Nav also.

I saw on the A3 that you managed to get the aftermarket unit pretty flush. That's one of the things I was worried about.

I'm leaning towards aftermarket now. Will keep an eye out for any deals.

Yeah you need the flush fitting kit which can be bought from Dynamic sounds and then you might need to trim the radio surround down a little if your OCD kicks in too badly like it did on mine. looks decent once i was done. That being said on the A4 the area where the radio fits it nicer than the A3 so it will look good.

here is a vid of a pioneer unit in the A4 which looks better than how it does in the A3 in my opinon
ignore the accent.

Yeah does look good. I wonder if any units have the ability to project nav directions to the DIS (if my DIS even allows it?)

Also, I'd like something that matches the red illumination of the S4 interior as closely as possible. Pioneer seem to be the only brand that have red.

No they don't support DIS as yet, that was something that annoyed me slightly but you learn to live without it. I know they are bringing out an adapter in the future that will allow interaction to the cars DIS but i haven't seen anything solid yet.

the red on the unit was what sold it for me, Alpine were always knows of their quality but pioneer beat them in this respect.
