lately my wipers when ive flicked them onto the one wipe down switch they carry on and i have to turn the car on and off to stop them going.
is this a common problem as i had a golf do this a while back but never sorted it, is it a sticking relay or something?

This problems getting really bad now guys, I'm going to start stripping things and checking connectors etc this weekend but just wondering has anyone heard of this issue before, they don't want to turn off unless I keep messing with them and somehow they stay off or I turn car off and leave a few mins?

I thought that myself, I've read a few posts with vag cars in general about wiper linkages seizing which is causing the relay to stick on and burning itself out eventually so I'm gonna strip that lot and degrease the spindles again see if that helps and replace the relay and go from there!

Almost certainly spindles seizing. Very common. Remove them and lightly sand down both spindle and tube they sit in, heavily grease and should be fine. Easy test is to undo the nut on the motor and run the wipers , if it turns normally then it's the spindles
