With a heavy heart I am selling my 350Z (please don't hate me). It has to go as 2 seats and 2 children aren't compatible. The only real option for me on the table now is Audi ownership.

I will be buying an Audi in the next few weeks. I will either be getting an Audi S5 V8 or 2006 S6 V10. I've done my research so know about living costs etc but haven't lived with either car. I'm looking to spend up to £15k. This doesn't give me many cars available in this price range but it's doable. Here's my thoughts when comparing them:

S6 pros; has 4 doors (easier for kids), has a V10 which will soon be extinct, more power
S6 cons; rear looks a bit dated

S5 pros; looks better, is sportier
S5 cons; more expensive to buy (although marginally cheaper to run), tricky to juggle kids into the rear

I'm torn as to which one to get, so if anyone has an opinion I'd love to hear it. I'm particularly interested in which one feels faster, and any owner experience of child seats in an S5.

Have you considered an S5 Sportback - that car will be easy to get kids in the back.
The sheer bulk of the S6 will make it harder to hustle down a B road - one of the reasons I downsized from an A8.

This will not be a problem if you only like going fast in a straight line.

The S5 sport backs are out of my range; they're a newer model than the coupe so not within budget unfortunately.

I have 2 kids, 5 year old and 2 year old and had an S5 Coupe for a week while my car was in the garage, hardest part was getting the seats in the back, they only just fit with the doors wide open and seats fully forward. it wasn't too bad getting the kids in and out but a bit of a pain having to move the seat forward then back each time. for practicality it would be S6 but for looks I would choose S5. What about S4 Saloon or Avant?

Thanks Nick; I thought it may be a struggle. It does look pretty tight in the back of the S5, but I didn't even consider struggling to get the child seat into the car itself. The youngest is only 4 months so we're going to be struggling for a while. I had considered the S4 but it in my eyes just doesn't look as good as an S5. I'd get one of the V6T ones but they're just above my budget until the missus is back at work.

I'm going to see an S6 tomorrow so wish me luck!! I might consider an S5 sportback next...

No problem.

My child seats are pretty big, Recaro Young Sport, but we do also have a Halfords one that is a lot smaller which we keep in my wifes car as she doesn't drive that far or that often so we just have to swap the one over every no & then and that would fit in a lot easier.

I am assuming if your youngest is 4 months then you are still using some kind of maxi-cosi isofix seat and base as the mo. and I think that would be a pain to put into the back. It is doable but for me (and especially when it is wet and cold) I would rather just open a back door and pop my kid in his seat rather than have to move the front seat, reach around inside then move the seat back etc.

The S4 is nice but I think for saloon you are looking at maybe 18k and then Avant 20k plus at the moment.

Good luck with the S6 let us know your thoughts.

I bought the S6 in the end so I probably don't belong in this sub-forum anymore!! Fantastic car and suits my needs perfectly. Whilst the S5 looks arguably cooler I would have ended up damaging something getting the kids in and out of the back.

Thanks

Nice one, think for your needs its the best choice. bet it sounds nice with that V10! Get some pics up, helps pass the time looking at nice cars while I am waiting for mine to be built!

Sorry for the delay; I was hoping for a chance to give the car a good wash at the weekend before photos but the weather didn't allow!! I'll do some real pictures when I get chance to put some wax on.

It's fantastic! The S6 doesn't feel as planted in corners but it can certainly take them at least at the same speed as I could in the 350Z. It may be stating the obvious but it is faster, easier to drive, more comfortable, has more gadgets and feels better made. It should do though as the 350Z was only £30k new.

The speed of the S6 is amazing; I don't know how anyone with an RS6 could make the most of that power! It seems held back in 1st and 2nd gear though. I presume it uses partial throttle to save the components of the car in lower gears? I'd love to take it on a track to see how far it could be pushed but not sure it's a good idea.

I'm taking it for a complimentary health check with Audi tomorrow so fingers crossed it was a good buy. And then next month I'll be going for a carbon clean. There's no misfires but I'll have peace of mind.
