Today I received a letter that I am highly suspicious of and I would like your opinions. Firstly my car has not been involved in an accident of any kind, I think I would know if it had. My car is still as perfect as it was the day I left the dealership with it aside for a small scuff on the drivers alloy wheel. Secondly, I can't prove it but I don't think I even went out on that day at all. I have, obviously, removed my details and reg. number but the contact name, ext. and direct dial numbers where all blank.
What do you guys think, is someone running some scam of some kind, what are they referring to, how can I leave the scene of something I was never involved in? I would never run off if I was knowingly involved in anything, even if I accidently damaged another car with my door I'd leave a note behind. Its got me pretty worried I must say and I would also like to know what I should do. I have tried ringing the phone number, no one answered, and the number of the Police Station in Shoreham is also different according to the website.
Cheers...

I've not experienced this but if it is mistaken identity as you suggest then a phone call should solve the issue, log all details who you spoke to, time, what was said etc.

Numbers are usually different they've changed some things, some sort of central number now (111 or something?).

Either way unless theres video evidence its your word against theres, the only thing I can think of is admin error or someone duped your plates.

Also your plate is visible and your photobucket is public.

I'd call the station direct (on the official number) and speak to them. . . If it's legit you'll be able to find out what's going on and have to deal with it - find out the details etc. if it's a fake I'm sure they would only be too happy to do a bit of investigation

I think that might be risky, I fully intend to ring the number on the letter on Monday and ask them what accident is alleged to have taken place. Dammit I turned off public on my photo bucket before, thanks A3_Rider...

Also it uses my short name, for example Nick instead of Nicolas.
But thanks for all your posts guys, I appreciate it...

I wouldn't wait. Call the central non-emergency police number and quote the incident number. They will be able to tell if it's a legit letter or bogus scam.

Hi and thanks for your advice, just rung the Station and they said it probably is a legit letter but might be an error, mistaken identity or theft. They have emailed the Road Collision Dept. and passed on what I have said to them and they will in turn get in contact. However I will ring them on Monday anyway as well. Their advice was that I should take pictures of my car as evidence it is totally unmarked, well I've plenty of them....

If you have photos on here as well email the police links to threads to show your car is always in perfect nick.

I got a similar letter to this last year when I had apparently been involved in an accident and failed to stop at the scene. It took me by surprise since I hadn't been in an accident and like you my car was immaculate.

It turned out that a woman in a Ford Galaxy who had barged her way in front of me on a roundabout had reported me to the police - she reported that I had crashed into her and then pursued her down the road! I wrote back to the police with my version of events but they weren't having it (who are they going to believe - mother with child in a people carrier or bloke in an S3). Fortunately I have a camera in the car and the letter had come through quickly enough for me to retrieve the footage - once this fact was communicated back to the woman the whole thing was mysteriously dropped... never did get an apology from plod for accusing me of being a maniac!

I never did find out the reason for it all either - maybe there was an insurance scam coming if the police had charged me or maybe she was just a nutter, either way I know I'm always going to have a camera recording when I drive because this sort of thing is getting more and more common.

Should be easy enough to get to the bottom of I would have thought. Hope you get it sorted. Not a nice thing to happen. And yes, your Photobucket is now private, I just checked for you. If I were you though, I would maybe consider changing your profile image to something more anonymous - but then im strange like that.

Don't ring any numbers on the letter, find the official number and call them or go to the police station and speak to someone direct and show the letter

Sounds a scam to me

No the letter appears to be legit. Can't do anything until monday and there is no point yet involving a solicitor until I have contacted them to find out more. However, even if it costs me good money to prove my car has never been in an accident, they will not get away with it...

As the letter uses your short name not full name then suspect it is a scam. The police would only use the name held by DVLA on your V5C (or possibly driving licence if they cross checked by address).

Agree with others to find a direct number independently and follow up that way. Don't ignore it though.

It's a horrible thing to happen, especially having to let it run over a weekend.

Good luck and let us know how it goes.

Thanks, I have checked with the police and they've said it is legit. Yes kinda makes the weekend a tad stressful...

Did you cut some one up? I hope it turns out to be nothing.

Ignore it

Not good advice - if it is legitimate then the OP could be up for failure to furnish. Verify the contact details and if legit then provide the information to ensure you're not up for a s172 offence.
Then look at bank/credit card statements, phone bills etc to try and determine what you were doing around that time.

Sorted, case dropped, description of my car was wrong, totally wrong even to the colour. They'll have to try harder...

Glad to hear that, hope they do the person trying to stitch you up

Good news, I can understand how worried you were.

Steve

Thanks, I was because they were claiming I'd run into a back of a horse and more or less pushed it and the rider onto the verge. Yeah right, like without damaging my car? It is sad that one person can make an allegation without proof and you're facing a possible driving ban, or even a prison sentence, for driving in a manner that could endanger life without even properly getting the facts right.

Unfortunately we live in a society of guilty till proven innocent and if you can't prove it which not everyone can then you face the consequences of someone else's actions, there will Never be an apology, you're just expected to accept it.

Very dangerous road to be on a horse or a cycle though they have the right to. I wouldn't do it as drivers steam along it, not myself, often exceeding the national limit for 'A' roads by quite a margin as it is a rat run and no place for some large animal lumbering along at 5mph. So to come around a blind corner, because the local council in their cost cutting barely cut the grass verges, even at 60, and be faced with an very large obstacle in the road is no fun for anyone. There is a perfectly good and wide pavement with a grass verge between it and the road on the right hand side so I would have thought it safer to use that.

I had the dibble turn up at our house one morning after I had left for work.
Asked the Mrs if I lived there and was the driver of the car. They gave details of my car. She said yes, what was wrong?
She was worried ad thought I had been in an accident or something.
They then asked that I contact Cheshire police HQ....which I did. Lots of confusion and said they will contact me in due course. ...eventually did and then said it was all a mistake and to forget everything. I never did find out what went on.
