So I'm driving home on Sunday afternoon, about an hour into my journey and the car goes into limp mode, turn it off and on again and all is well. Drove it really gently for the next few days and got it into the garage asap to get looked at. They scanned for errors and got P0234, gave it a good checking over but could find no reason for it to have happened. Went out for a good run after picking it up and found that around 3,000 rpm in third was the point it would run a bit lumpy and it kicked into limp mode.
I drive in a fairly spririted manner and not shy about getting the revs up. My daily commute is 30 minutes each way and once or twice a week I do an hour or so.
I only had a new turbo fitted in December last year, so this is a little annoying. Don't mind it going wrong as I do push it a bit, just hate intermittent issues that can't be diagnosed.

I'd get your mechanic to remove the turbo, strip it, clean it, reassemble and refit it...also if the car is remapped I'd be talking to my mapper and getting stuff turned down.

You may want to try terraclean before cleaning the turbo the old fashioned way.

A small after thought - it may be the actuator that needs attention.

I have the same problem, but mine isnt mapped, but does have a bigger intercooler and hardpipe kit on it, iv ran turbo cleaner through it and that didnt help. mine goes into limp mode in 5th Gear around under hard acceleration.

I've done loads of research and the posibilitys range from the N75 and vaccum pipes to the turbo veins sticking.

Im having mine mapped at the end of July, fingers crossed this helps it!

They initially suspected the actuator but it was ok. The turbo is only 10,000 miles old, could it really need cleaning already? At least it's under warranty.

Highly doubt it would need cleaning that soon, unless there was a problem with the intake and some crap has gotten in there but that would cause more damage then this.

I'm not going to be happy with the car if they can't find the issue, so will probably just trade it in for something else.

Sorry to here that mate, got a picture? And from research this is a fairly common problem but no one knows for sure what causes it.

Me on the other hand il keep my baby till it dies and then after that! I'm hoping a Re-Map sorts it out.

I'm gonna go back to them after work, must be something else we can do.
Went to limp mode twice this morning, driving like a real dog really. Wonder if I should change the N75.

Iv learnt to drive with mine, I know how to keep it from happening because I've had it well over a month now, iv got all new vacuum pipes for it to go on at the end of the month. Hopefully this will sort it, and hope hear good news on your side too!

What year is the car? If it has a BKD engine I'd be seriously talking to the mapper - those turbos are made of chocolate and he/she should know that and map accordingly.

It weird how many people don't seem to know that though - Awesome GTI remapped my friends old A3, he was on his third turbo when he got fed up and asked them to put the car to stock.

It's a 57 plate. It was fine when I first had it mapped when the new turbo went on, it's only the last few weeks it's been sluggish and lumpy and Sunday was the first time it went into limp mode.

Mines a 57 plate, and iv not had a new turbo, it's on 103,000 miles, kinda running on hopes and dreams that it doesn't go, 2 previous owners were carful young women drivers haha, saving for a hybrid turbo. But I don't honk it's the turbo cashing my problem. It all happens after I blown the intercooler pipe off.

Got the maf off, just waiting for my dad to come over with some electrical cleaner. There's a mesh guard over one end of the pipe though so can't see inside.

Sprayed with cleaner, no idea if it was dirty as you can't see the important bits. Dried as much as possible and left for a bit. Everything reassembled. Quick drive up the road. Before and after dashcommand readings compared. No difference. Drives the same.

Get a pressure test done (smoke) it'll rule out or tell u if there's a boost leak any where and check your boost pressure sensor.

I have had this problem for 2 years and researched well and hard. I'll share with you what Iearnt. It doesn't matter how long you've had the turbo in there you its all dependant on the miles and if you've done like 80k+ miles then it may need a clean (if the housing and parts are still in good condition) or a new one fitted. Yes you can use the Mr muscle trick or revive turbo cleaner but these are temporary fixes. It can be anything from your solenoid block (on diesels commonly known to some as n75), loose piping to the turbo or commonly the vnt vanes have lots of carbon built up and are now "sticky". If your turbo hasn't experienced many miles then I would give the Mr muscle or revive trick a go but if it persists then either change or clean. Be careful if you change for a recon as most recons arent fully cleaned out and restored to factory condition they most likely have the internal cleans and one or two valve seals replaced. If your going to clean then I recommend a company in midlands called gap-turbos. They have 30+ years experience and can clean your turbo to spanking new condition or replace; both at amazing prices. They also off 3 years warranty for peace of mind. Iv had my turbo cleaned by them in may and its been amazing so far. Once you have changed or replace your turbo you should always blast the car 1-2 times weekly at high revs or just put it into sport transmission as doing this will help remove and carbon sticking onto the vanes.

It was a brand new turbo fitted in December, has now done under approx 7k or so but need to find the paperwork to confirm. I'm going to try the cheap fix tomorrow and it's due a service in a couple of weeks so will speak to them about checking the turbo further. If the turbo is duff then it's under warranty anyway. My only concern there is that they say that something else is faulty on the car which has caused the turbo to fail. I will also ask about testing the Maf and N75.
My daily commute is about 30 minutes each way on the M5 and I'm not shy with the throttle.

what should happen when I disconnect the MAF? I pulled it with the engine running, I had an error code but nothing else seemed to change, ran the same
