Hi Guys,

I am hoping to order an S5 SB very soon & I have been contemplating adding the rear side airbags but as I have 2 young children they are still in their car seats, I think they are called Recaro Young Sport and they are quite big so I wondered if there was a side impact would the child seats block the airbag/not work properly and therefore make them not worth having?

Thanks.

Nick, I don't have child seats (my 14-year old daughter could do with having a bib considering how much food she drops on the floor, but she's taller than her mum now), but I think I can answer your question. Looking at my car the airbags are right at the edge of the seat and are on far side of the seatbelt. I cannot see how any child seat would be wide enough to block the airbag. For that to happen the child seat would have to extent right over the seatbelt and almost be touching the door. They weren't like that in my B5 and the B8.5 is a lot wider. I think you're safe. Besides kids don't say in that sort of seat for very long.

Thanks very much for the info. Dippy.
Will have to give it some thought. These seats are pretty big though, like armchairs! From what I have read they are supposed to be in them until they are about 11!!!

Take it from me that no 6 year old will want to sit in a seat with a 3-point harness, nor will you want to be doing it up for them. Instead seats like the Monza or Milano use the car's seat belt until the child is big enough not to need a booster. My youngest daughter is 12 and it has been many years since she used a child seat. She must have been no older than 8 since she needed one.
The Young sport isn't ISOFIX is it? Are you sure you want one without ISOFIX?
I had one like the Monza Nova IS. The big 'cushion' on the front is great when they are very young. It is safe and allows them to sleep sitting up. It uses the cars seat belt and when the child gets older, you just remove the cushion bit.
I measured the distance between the outer edge of the ISOFIX point and the inner edge of the airbag as 13-14cm. These seats are certainly a lot wider than the one I had but I still think it wouldn't interfere with the airbag.

Thanks Dippy. The young sport actually converts as well so once our eldest was about 15kg we took the 3 point parts all off and can use the car seat belt as normal and it's not isofix we had a maxicosi isofix when they were babies but they weren't in that for long! I think the seats we have can be reclined slightly to help be more comfortable for sleep on longer journeys. Both kids are pretty tall so I can't see them being in them until they are 11 or 12 like it says in the documentation, so next stage I guess is a booster in a few years.
