TQS track car project - extremely slow progress

A busy day today. Engine out, gearbox out and split from engine.

And also, a little teaser :)

Managed to get the tyres on wheels today. Went to test fit them and to my surprise, bolts on the rear are too short on 15mm spacer. They are fine on Avus wheels, but on these don't even touch the thread. Front ones on 10mm spacers are fine. 40mm bolts get 8 turns on them. So need to order 45mm bolts for the rear now!

And that's how much clearance there is on 10mm spacer! About 1.5mm.
Think I will need to stay with 12mm.

Guys, are SKF rear wheel bearings any decent?

I am ordering a bush kit for rear from allgerman and wonder if I should order bolts for the arms. They are £11 each, and there are 4 of them :(

I wouldnt. They're usually ok, and if one turns out not to be and you have to wait a few days for a bolt to come in its not a huge issue is it?

Yeah, it should be fine. ;)

On the rear bushes just a little advice from my point of view is with the upper arm outer bushes give the arm a good clean before you press the new bushes in as mine were corroded and it screwed up one of the new bushes my f**k up but i wouldnt be doing it again now ive learnt from my mistakes lol

I will probably have them sandblasted because they are a bit rusty. Do you use some special grease to press in the bushes?

Just normal lithium grease will do or copper slip etc

I'm thinking that if I have the arms sandblasted, I might have them powdercoated as well. Can they be coated inside, where the bush sits?

you'll probably have to grind out the powder after to get the bush in, the tolerances are very tight and the thickness of the powder will likely jam the bush.

Started work on rear suspension after work today.
The passenger side droplink completely fell off the balljoint so will need to cut it off.

I will also need a new abs sensor on driver's side. It was completely corroded and stuck in the hub and had to destroy it to remove it.

But question for this week is...

How on earth do you remove the handbrake cable from the lower arm?

Position it is going to spend the next few days.

I had a go at the bushes myself, but 3 of them were stuck. Dropped them off to a garage but they had to burn them out.
They also got stuck with couple of the bushes, even small press won't press new ones in. Going to drop them at a machine shop to see if they have a better press!

They shouldnt be too hard to press in i only had trouble with the upper arm outer bushes and one of the lower upright ones as it bent the metal flat part that sits against the lower arm as i place the socket the wrong way so as it compressed the bush the metal insert collapsed into the socket.

I never even attempted to remove the abs sensors i disconnected them from under the rear seat and left them intact.

Yeah, one of the stuck bushes is the one in upright. One side abs sensor came out no problem. The second one fell apart.

Does anyone have torque specs for reear suspension bolts? All I can find is front suspension

My 15 year old suspension :) New bushes, bearings and droplinks. Was going to powdercoat it all, but I've spent too much money already. So good old hammerite out, and a result:)

Lasts well. Done both of ours with hammerite. I did use poly bushes tho so bush fitting is dead easy

Mine squeek a bit at low speeds despite greasing the hell out of them. The Mrs car is fine. Tightened the cars up no end and take a 10th of the time to fit

Really wanted to finish the rear today after waiting 2 weeks for pads orderex on ebay. Got the new calipers, disks and pads on. Extended the handbrake cable.
And a bit of a **** up on my side. The brake fluid hose is ****** couple of cm too short. It just is enough to reach caliper, but there is not even a mm left. Not good enough :/ That's 350mm hose. Will need to order 400mm one, or can I just get 5cm extension?

New 45cm brake lines arrived today, and I could finally finish off the rear.

Was waiting for ebc pads for two weeks, but they got lost in postage, so got some normal pads for now. These are exactly the same as the TQS ones?

Also, new windscreen was fitted today and the car is ready for MOT this Friday. Fingers crossed!

When I bought the car, I got a quick shift kit from previous owner, which I forgot about!
Does this look complete?

Looks OK not set to shortest shift but take out the one from your car and see if anything looks missing

What would be the shortest setting? When the blue bit is attached higher?

Believe so. Set the blue part highest on the leaver and measure the distance from the handbrake or measure it now on standard the see that your current set up on the ss is then move it and remeasure and see if the is a reduction there should when its closest but its adjustable in case you need it further for a smoother shift

I think it is set up to shortest, but goes like that

Just move the join from the bottom to the top as it moves the pivot point. So reduces the throw

yeh it should never be hung off the bottom like the first pic. it should always look like the lsat pic, you just move the bolt up or down the holes depending on the throw you want.

I think its already set to the shortest throw? If you move the bolt to the top hole the shifter lever needs to move further to move the rod the same amount because the lever arm is shorter.

Correct. Found this online, so it is set up to shortest.

Passed thr MOT, after having headlights adjusted. Didn't drive it for over 2 months so it brought smile to my face. Loving it. It seems that the rear behaves a lot better now, after changing bushes and upgrading the brakes. Need to fit quickshift and the velcro bits for sideskirts and book a trackday!

Wicked so your project if finished then and let us know how the track day goes
