Cleaning obsession

It's just a car, a metal box. :) I spend my time driving it.

Like white goods.

I don't spend my time washing and polishing my microwave, I just use it.

(Besides, it's a mass market A3, hardly a Ferrari ;) )
If that is your view then I really cannot understand why you bought an Audi? Why not buy a cheap Vauxhall Astra?

Perhaps because they are great cars to drive and the cabin is a nice place to be when you are driving. Some people spend their time driving their car rather than washing it. Personally I have never washed my car, at least not myself. I am not physically able to but it does go through a conveyor type car approximately once a week!

Can't get mine in the garage to many kids bikes etc.

Which is why town planners no longer count a garage on a new house as one of required parking places!

Fair dos. Although personally, I like to keep my car immaculate inside and out, particularly given how much was spent on it. But then I'm like that with the house, my laptop and smartphone - I like everything being pristine at all times.

I tried keeping it clean once.

Unfortunately it didn't make the S3 any better or any difference to being a drivers car ;)

Keeping a car clean...? Well for me l started very young at 10 years old for pocket money on a Saturday morning,l used wash/clean outside/inside the 2 owners of this ice cream company my dad worked for, both where Opel Manta's Berlinetta's a Orange one and a pale blue one...one even had a 8 track stereo in it ............. "Very high tech at the time"lol, they used to change cars every year, the last cars that l cleaned for them was a VX Royale and a Ford Granada 2.8i Ghia X with Awesome Michelin TRX tyres.......THE SAME COLOUR/SPEC that smashed through the windy at the start of "The Professionals" ...lol,l was 13 years old by this time.

Anyway its been a obsession for me since then, but l have the same attitude to everything l treasure.

Ps.....The only reason l stopped cleaning their cars was because l wanted to drive the Ford soooooooooo much.....and l did,l started it up, after a good clean and reversed it straight into a customers car, in the Patrons only car park... where l used to clean them,l got into so much trouble...........lol

Just a wee Tale from Jassy.........lol

Do you cover many miles, Phil? I ask because I clayed mine at 10 months old and 9500 miles and hardly anything came off on the claybar, so I wondered if I'd done it too soon. It looks fabulous so I'm glad I did it, but was it necessary? And here's you doing yours every 3 months. Mine stands out in all weathers and is parked under a pine tree.

But doesn't it make you feel warm and fuzzy inside looking at a freshly washed and waxed car glistening in the sun? I've had cars from new before and when I sell them 3/4 years on they still look as good inside and out as the day I bought it and that gives me a huge amount of satisfaction and pride.

Nope
All I care about is how it drives and how it performs. If it doesn't do that, it's not a good car for me.

All my cars get thoroughly cleaned before I sell them, and the dealer or buyer always remarks on how well it's been looked after :)

Fair enough, each to their own. But to me, that's like buying a mansion then never hoovering, dusting or doing the dishes and throwing your litter on the floor and letting the garden get overgrown. The 'how it drives' argument I find a little odd as its common knowledge a Focus ST or a BMW 1 Series has the edge over Audi so why not go for one of those instead?

I'm not trying to be provocative by the way. Just curious to understand your viewpoint from my OCD perspective :)

Yep agree. My S3 is underwhelming, disappointing and doesn't cut it for me. Which is why I perhaps can't care for washing etc. I washed my 8P S3 much more often than this one.

So yes, it might be a A45, Golf R400, Focus RS next. And I might just love then enough to wash them.

that is really your style, you probably will wash it a lot. ( But not as much as BH) :tongueclosed:

Mine is white so it shows every spot of tar. I just love keeping it clean and spotless. I don't get a lot off it when it's clayed but it's nice and smooth when done
I also do my mates BMW for him. We have an arrangement, they do all my decorating and I look after his car

Sounds like you've got the better end of the deal by far there! Played

Have to admit I'm OCD about keeping my car pristine. Got the bug about 20 years ago whilst helping out a mate with his own valeting company. Then added to my collection of products along the way and equipment.
Cars that never get washed tend to come up like shiny pennies when they finally get washed as they've never had the chance to be inflicted with swirls etc. The muck and crap give the protection!!!
Also have to say that drive through spinny washes are the work of the devil. One way to obliterate your paintwork. I'd rather never wash mine than take it through one of those. :sob:

But the only thing is some people as stated above by h5jdr cannot physically
do it by themselves.

I have no discs left in my lumbar spine. Had two ops and possibly going for a much bigger op. Attend spine rehab centre every week and I take copious amounts of pills. I love detailing my car. It's one of the only things I can do. Used to play high level sport and I was a PE teacher, none of which I can now do. I'm still in extreme pain but I still do it because I love to and it makes me feel 'normal' for a short time. I simply don't trust anyone to valet/detail my car, but me. I'll keep doing it till I physically can't.

Shhhh :p

And just to show that I once was part of the OCD cleaning detailing gang, I have CCTV videos of me regularly prepping, pre-washing, snow foaming, washing, claying, polishing, sealing, waxing etc. my S3 8P ;)

I have a garage full of detailing products sat on the shelves :(

Oh how the choice of car can change things ;) Now its lucky if it gets washed twice a year by the conveyor wash, or the local Albanian gang :)

Totally understand that. But, please don't take cars to garage forecourt spiny washes. They totally ruin your paintwork and put on the cheapest, harshest chemicals they can find. When you then put your wipers on and you see an oily streak this is those garbage chemicals leaving a film. Find the closest hand car wash and let them do it. Still not a fan but 100% better than the spiny things. When I can't do my car I have a guy about 3 miles away who is £4.50 and does a great job.

I'm quite happy with the result from my local 'spinny' conveyor wash. I have used it for over 2 years on my last A3 and my current A3 and I always get comments from my dealer about how good my car looks, especially when it comes to trade-in. Each to his own but I no longer have any desire to spend hours washing my car but I still like it to look clean so I use the car wash. I think the colour helps - Silver. I'm sure it would not look so good if it was Black and I used a car wash but I would never ever buy a Black car so it's not a problem. All my nine A3s have been Silver, mainly because I like Silver cars but they also wash up nicely. Every six months or so my very kind wife gives my car a coat of Autoglym Super Resin and I help where I can and that seems to keep it looking good enough for me.

Even when I did wash my own car it was only a very simple basic wash and the use the Super Resin every 6 months or so.

As you say, as long as you're happy with your car then that's all that counts. Would be very boring if everyone did the same as each other.

i do ours twice a week without fail,

pre-wash
rinse
snowfoam
rinse
snowfoam & use as shampoo
rinse
rinse with filtered water
pat dry last few bits
quick detailer spray and wipe.

and every two moths re-wax View attachment 61537

Out of interest what filter do you use as was looking for one.

Also have you considered putting a coating on your car like gtechniq Exo for example as you wouldn't need to do quick detailer or re wax every 2 months , just dry it and it stays cleaner for longer plus washes far easier. Lasts about 2.5 years too.

As you can guess I used some a month ago now and it's the best thing I've spent money on (apart from a detailer prep instead of Audi and I had him put gtechniq crystal serum too.)

I'll be 100% doing the same on my future cars.
Nice colour too :)

I use aqua gleam filters.the car has had nanolex ultra applied to it and last unto 24 months, still wax it tho.

Anyone use arm or all shield? Used it on my last s1 and with each wash every week then a g aqua wax. Worked ok for me on glacier white. Will probably do same on s3 which is being built next wee k

I've used Armour - good for beading but makes the car slightly gloopy not smooth and slippery as with a polish. I found it made washing the car more difficult next time round too, as the mit tended to resist gliding along. On the plus side, it was very quick and easy to apply. Longevity - average, lasted 4-5 weeks (washing once a week).

Ha... you are not alone.. .. I am a little obsessed with a clean car as well.. ( always have been ) I have been known to clean her, go for a drive then clean her again before pushing back into the garage... My other half doesn't get it, but does tolerate it to a certain extent, she would probably describe it as " making love ", at least I would !.. I find it very therapeutic after a hard weeks work, I can totally relax..

In fact I could spend all day doing a " Mr Miyagi " .. Wax on... Wax off...but I think most would call it " crazy " :haha:.

As my car is not a daily driver, it generally doesn't get what most people would call " dirty " so it rarely gets washed with water, I have a system of microfibre clothes that I use carefully along with various waterless cleaners, waxes and quick detailers. Comes up a treat . Always amazes me though how many people clean a car and forget about blacking/shining the tyres. I think it finishes a car!

Do love a cay bar as well :redrs4:
