Ok so the misses today tells me she hit a kerb and has taken a massive chunk from a tyre. This obviously needs replacing.
I've been told mixed thing like you must replace all 4 or you must replace just two and after having a search some people are saying just replace the one.
Who do I listen to?
All tyres have done 12k rears are about half worn and front 3/4 worn.
Rear is damaged.
What do you guys think?

Personally I'd replace both the rears, put them on the front and move the fronts to the rear.

Keep the half worn good tyre as a spare, maybe even buying a fifth alloy to go with it. That's what I've done.

However, I have in the past only replaced 1 tyre as funds were tight.

Thanks mate, I'm not too worried about money because she is paying ;)
Shame she didn't do the front with higher wear.
It has marked the wheel as well but that can be done at any time I guess.
I was going to use black circle because they seem the cheapest/most convenient

12k and 3/4 worn...thought they would last longer tbh :(

Tbh that's a guess, I just glance at them on a regular basis but haven't seen it since it was damaged to check closely. I know front is more worn than the back. I can have measure tomorrow if you like.

Google tyre leader, similar to black circles but have noticed some very good prices on there

Only got 14k out of our fronts and not driven mad

New tyres should always fitted to the rear. Or should I say "the best" tyres should be fitted to the rear.

Oh, and watch out for date codes on some of these websites. Tyre leader have some sizes on there which are over 6yrs old.....Plus factor in the fitting charge.

I'd do some research online, then give the business to your local independent tyre dealer. You'll get a similar deal plus its always better to deal with a man than a mouse.

3/4 worn would leave 2-3mm wouldn't it? I would definitely look to replace fronts if down to 3mm, especially on an S. But that's maybe just me!

Never knew that this was the best way to go. I've always assumed a new set of tyres on the front is better as those are the ones doing the most work.

I believe the theory goes that it's better to have more grip at the back of the car, regardless of which wheels are driven, as it's easier to control understeer from an unexpected loss of traction at the front than oversteer from the same at the back.

She has just got back so ive had a look. Fronts have about 3mm left until the wear marks and the rear have about 4mm left.
I do get what you are saying about putting them on the rear but that only matters until they are worn in. I'll put them on the front so they wear even ish.

Yeah, this is bang on. Best tyres on the rear = understeer. Worst tyres on rear = oversteer. Understeer is considered easier to control. Some good stuff on YouTube on this.

Note it's "best tyres" not necessarily newest tyres. I'd rather have 2 Michelin on the rear with 4mm than 2 wang-kings with 8mm.

Theory basically comes from the ocasion when you brake hard your car gets more weight on the front so the rear tyres lose grip by loosing weight.

So suddenly turning the wheel needs the best grip you can have at the back of your car or you could just oversteer reaching a moment where you just simply do a 180 turn by loosing your rear.

Well the s3 is geared towards under steer, maybe it will be a bit more even with old tyres on the rear :/

I had to replace my driver side rear tyre in November last year due to a puncture. Just did that one at the time. Had the other three replaced a few weeks back, all down to around 3mm tread after just over 14k. Even wear across the fronts and rears.
