Chaps,

Thought I'd let you all know that my S3 was stolen on the 23rd May from the East Yorkshire area. Anyone around this area make sure you keep your keys hidden!

House was broken into and they stole two of our cars. Five month old Mythos Black S3 and a 9 month old White GT86.

Stay safe fellow owners!

Olly

Good luck recovering it.
V sorry to hear this.

Cars already been declared a write-off, ordered a replacement a week ago now so I'm very excited about that. Gone for a bit of a different theme this time!

I imagine they went straight up the motorway to Hull and dropped onto a Ferry - but who knows!

Good result probably there as you don't know how they've treated it I guess.

I know how I'd like them treated.

Completely agree. I didn't want to see it back after they've had it.

Managed to catch a glimpse of my replacement the other day:

Wow, that looks something special.

Sorry to hear this. I must say I dont think I would be so casual about the whole thing as you are being.

Just over two week ago now, suppose I'm over the worst of it. Adding to the fact I have the new one on the way helps lighten the blow!

I read a few weeks ago that the S3 is the 9th most popular car for thieves in the UK.

After already having one stolen, and with the S3 being very sought after by scumbag criminals, I'm not sure I would want my replacement to be such an unsubtle shade of blue!

That's my only worry! But hopefully they only needed one S3 and now they're after something else!

As long as you're fully insured and have gap, they can keep nicking them I guess. Would be nice to get a new car every 6 months!

There aren't many S3's near me. In fact, I have only ever seen 3 of the 8V version. However, there are loads of SQ5s around, and last year there was a spate of thefts. 5 of them were stolen in the space of 8 weeks, and not one of them ever turned up again.

Sad news. For what it's worth, I leave my keys in plain sight -and that's as a shotgun owner! Much rather they just take the keys, take the car and foxtrot oscar. Much better than balaclava bellsniffs waking you up and threatening all sorts - waking the kids and potentially doing serious emotional damage.

Absolutely love the new colour btw!

My fear is not so much theft but break in to steal the keys (in case they either decide to take anything else of value while they're in or of course we're in at the time and face any physical threat). There are at least 2 S3's on my estate which have been there for quite some time and neither has been targeted it seems. I am considering putting one of these camera's above the driveway that will record 7 days rolling data in the cloud. A further deterrent if nothing else although i'd like to think the house alarm going off would mean they would be seen carrying out the theft.

After speaking with the police it's surprising how easily they seemed to break in. We're having new locks fitted that have a deadbolt that drops if the lock is tampered with so only someone from the inside can open it. We're also upgrading our alarm to a more modern one to hopefully deter any other thieves.

I've had Audi install privacy glass and I was trying to find a price for the black carbon mirrors but couldn't seem to find an official price?

If you have a PVC front door and just shut it they will get in easily! Everyone must remember to pull the handle up...engage the multipoint bolts and then lock it!

They will then move on to a house that hasn't done this.

I had locked multipoint pvc door broken into earlier this year to steal the keys for my s3. They got into to it very easily. I've since upgraded lock mechanism to a snap off front, so again it can only be opened from inside

I've been looking at a Y-cam Home Monitor HD Pro and installing this looking over the driveway in the hope it's a further deterrent. Probably about £200 all-in to set this up. Anyone any experience of this or similar?

£334 from Audi for the pair. The S caps are that much each!

Really sorry to hear this mate. If you want a bit of humour from a similar situation... A friend of mine has a Nissan Skyline R34 GTR (£30k's worth of car) and his brother has a Nissan Almera. Thieves broke into his house and picked up a set of Nissan keys went outside to try and steal the skyline only to realise it was the Almera keys. By that time a neighbour had come out so they had to take the Almera instead. Went for £30k's worth of car and ended up with £300's worth! Whole thing was caught on camera as he had several throughout his house and outside.

I think the opposite is actually true.
If it stands out, they are less likely to go for it, as it attracts too much attention - and they are more likely to get caught.
They prefer them understated.

A 50 watt led security light with a motion sensor will deter them more than a CCTV home security system "that they wont see",best to install both.

I'd be inclined to agree the rarer colours would be less attractive to thieves; much easier to spot!

Really sorry to hear the OP's news; unfortunately this kind of problem really does put me off an S3 because it seems to be increasingly common!

How much did cost to have the privacy glass fitted by Audi?

Big dog
Security lights
CCTV
Good alarm with panic buttons (I have these by the bed and it autodials the police (home guard security are very good at these installs)
And a tracker not so much that u want the car back but for the thieves to get caught

I had them throw it in for me to sign on the dotted line so I couldn't tell you - sorry!

+1 on the Dog!

Probably the best deterrent! I had some pikey looking character knocking on the door trying to sell me a driveway! My Dog was going mad at him so he didn't hang around long. After that my son said he had noticed him looking in the car before he knocked!

You never know!?

+2 for the dog. I have a Leonberger and they don't get much bigger than them. She is the softest thing on the planet and if she got hold of someone she would lick them to death but she barks when she gets excited and runs up to the gate. Anyone that doesn't know her and hears that bark wont hang around long. Its loud!! If that doesn't deter them seeing her stand up against the gate with her enormous head looking DOWN on you is enough! haha

I disagree with this way of thinking and believe that if you like a car you should buy it. If it gets stolen that's where insurance comes in.

I read this blog not long ago and the BMW X5 is still the most stolen car... No S3's in the top ten either :)

http://blog.greenflag.com/2015/britains-most-stolen-cars-luxury-suvs-top-list/

This list only includes cars with a tracker so is not 100% accurate but gives you an idea.

Oh and sorry to hear of your loss OP @Oliver Fish - Looks like your getting a great replacement... I love Riviera Blue

We had an attempted break in, the week before last, in Leeds. It seems they were after the keys to the S3 too. They managed to get through the conservatory doors that had old euro cylinder locks on but fortunately could get through the inner sliding door, even though it had similar locks! Not sure if they were disturbed by the dog next door!
We ended up getting new high end locks on every door (about £450!!) and I fitted this camera system last weekend. Just stuck a 1TB hard disk in that was about 40 quid for continuous recording.
Amazon product
.
Quality is very good, and can be viewed online via a phone. Its power over ethernet so only needs 1 cable running from the box to each camera.

I'm now ultra paranoid about the car, and have had conflicting info from the police regarding where to keep the keys. The guy next door is a copper and he said keep them upstairs, however the policewoman who came round after the event, told us to keep them downstairs.

Cars can be replaced. Lives can't. if someone wants to break in, they will.
