I've recently bought a Audi A3 2.0 TDI and I'm having an odd problem and wondering if anyone else has the same problem. It's a bit of a new car to me so once i was pulling out of a roundabout and accidentally switched from 1st gear to 4th gear. The engine then cut out and showed the error message 'Automatic Start/Stop failed, please restart the ignition'. This problem is reproducible all the time.

I've taken it back to the Audi garage where I bought it and the guys where really helpful but said there is nothing that they can do. They have never seen it before but could only test the 1.6 diesel and the petrol versions of the car (all of which don't have the same problem). The car doesn't log any faults.

The Audi garage are logging a DISS report with audi because they don't quite understand why it behaves in this way.

I understand the car kicking in the stall protection, why the engine doesn't restart and you have to manually restart the ignition.

Just wondered if this is the expected behaviour of the car?

Not sure if I'm misunderstanding, but I don't know what you're expecting to happen here?

I would always expect to have to restart the car if I stalled it. The message is slightly odd I suppose but technically correct. Are you expecting it to restart automatically?

Agreed, exactly what I would expect to happen if you stalled it. I think the generic message is just badly worded for that particular scenario. It's basically telling you that the engine is no longer running, but it's not due to Stop/Start operating.

Ah ok. Yeah it is a funny message. I wonder if they've phrased it that way in case you don't realise you've stalled (!) and are sat there waiting patiently for stop-start to kick in again?

To be honest I don't really know :/ . Firstly I've never been able to stall a car travelling at 20mph before and I find it odd that I would loose power to the engine while moving. Secondly I don't know why the car won't restart. I would imagine that the revs drop so low that the stall protection kicks in, but it's unable to restart the car.

I know it's a very special case, and i don't have a habit of going from 1st to 4th. I just thought it was a slightly odd behaviour for the car.

Anyway, set your mind at rest. This is exactly what should happen. You've stalled that car, thus the engine has stopped due to circumstances outside of the Stop/Start operation and it has no idea what those circumstances were (you might have crashed, for instance). For safety it's asking you to manually restart to confirm that you are in control of the car.

when i stall mine (doesn't happen so much now but i did it all the time when new) the same message pops up but it does restart itself automatically.

What an odd posting?

The car does exactly what any diesel would do and Audi (politely) say theres nothing they can do about it.....hmm, I wonder who was the topic of conversation during their tea break that day!! :whistle2:

I'm sure your stalling the car as stated before. If you don't believe comments left about stalling. Well learn how to drive. 2nd to 4th maybe when you have build up speed.

I have A3 2.0 TDI Sport Saloon with 6 speed Manual. I have on occasion stalled it due to not enough revs, but dip the clutch and it restarts itself as per Auto Start/Stop normally does when the clutch is depressed.

It's just silly wording.

Just like "check door safe lock" that my SEAT used to flash up when turning it off, it actually meant check the doors are locked before walking away from the car. I had no idea until I researched it.

Nothing wrong with 1st to 4th stalling, even if it's a diesel.

The car stalled. On all my previous VW and Audi diesels (without automatic start) you would have to stop the car and turn the ignition off before firing up the starter to get going again, which was always embarrassing in traffic. Cannot comment on the DIS error message which does sound misleading. The stall in a diesel is usually pretty violent, the first time I did it (which makes it sound like I did it regularly, I didn't), also on a roundabout, I thought the car had been rear ended.

Yep dip the clutch., done similar silly thing and my automatic reaction was to dip the clutch anyway, and it just started again
Saved my embarrassment...

Mostly it restarts automatically, but sometimes it does require me to press the button again. I haven't worked out what causes it to do this instead of restart automatically though.

Yes sometimes you will be asked to perform a manual restart as part of a security check that happens if the key is outside of the car.

Key is always in my pocket. Guess it sometimes loses connectivity or something.
