So my mother dearest has got herself a new car and isn't bothered about keeping her personal reg. I'm going to put it on my car (as it's still applicable to my name).

I'm considering getting pressed plates - who are the current favourites for legal pressed plates? Are Diesel Tuning still doing them?

Next question... how do I remove my current plates and fit the new ones? There's no visible screws on my current numberplates so I'm just assuming they're stuck on with tape... is that correct before I start yanking at them? I want to make sure there aren't any secret screw fixings from behind or anything (there's no numberplate surround or anything).

With regards to fitting the front plate... do the pressed plates 'bend'? The front plate on the car isn't mounted on a completely flat surface as I'm sure you're aware, which isn't a problem with the current flexible plastic plates I'm sure. Is it a problem for metal pressed ones? Do I need to gently mould it to the shape of the front of the car before applying??

Finally... What's the best tape to use? I don't want these falling off!

Sorry - lots of stupid questions! I want to make sure I get this right.

Thanks Dave. I think I'll go for the tape as I'm not too keen on the look of numberplate surrounds! Good to see someone else vouches for them - I'll get all the DVLA paperwork together to transfer the reg over to my car and then get them ordered :)

Another quick question on the whole personalised plates front if you don't mind (new to this whole thing!)...

When I fill in the retention form and send it off to DVLA, they'll apparently transfer the reg to my vehicle and issue me with a new certificate which I will then have to take to a garage to get the new plates made up for my car...

I assume that once the certificate arrives I can just order these pressed plates? Do DVLA require any proof that the new plates have been fitted and will it matter that I've not gone to a garage of some description to get them done?

I don't see the point in taking it to a garage to get the new reg put on (and paying for the plates?), then ripping them off and putting pressed plates on a few days later.

Cheers

There is nothing stopping you ordering them now, i ordered my private plate as soon as i bought it of dvla.

But obviously can't use it till you get the documents back (takes about 2 weeks)

I was going to order them now but wasn't sure if they'd require proof of registration or something. If not then I'll get them ordered.

Yeah just give the new reg on ebay and they make them :)
Don't forget to tell your insurance when you get the new V5, probably cost £15 to change the reg.

Just ordered a set of these! Cheers for the heads up! :)

BMW.styling does not appear on my plates:

From the listing:

BY LAW, THE FOOT OF THE PLATES BEAR OUR NAME AND POST CODE AND BSAU145D IN SMALL LETTERING

The name that appears is Autostyle Limited is very unobtrusive.

I had them plates on my Clio and was told they were illegal and took off on MOT, it is defiantly the same plates, has Dublin address at the bottom.

Think ill put them on my A3 then with S Line surroundings.

Thinking of going with the raised gel lettered plates on my golf - think fancy plates is best for them. Just another option for you to consider mate.

Probably because metal is not a type of reflective material? :p

Thread conversion, this is now 'plate legality debate' thread.

I have had metal pressed plates for the last 10 years, every mot they have been fine.

Depends how polished said metal is if it's reflective or not.

However, the plates can be made to be reflective.

Got my current ones from here, don't even need to send paperwork off which avoids your V5 being lost in the post, as they accept photographs of the documents.

Black and silver number plates legal We offer FREE Postage,Vintage & Classic Old number plates for cars bikes motorcycles tractors military vehicles, metal and pressed aluminium number plates, black and white number plates

Been through countless MOT's with these plates and they look decent and are fully legal/reflective

Go to DTUK mate! The Service from Andy (Abyss) on here was second to none.

They require you to send off the proof to them but it's very quick. I ordered on the Saturday and got them on the Wednesday. Quality is great and I have had them on my car for nearly 2 and half years now and it makes the car look great!

The shadows cast from the LED Number Plate lights also looks awesome!!

I didn't want to drill them so bought some ABT Tuning Plate Surrounds from Awesome GTI...

yes dave, great plates! I've had two sets from you now. Only negative I can think is the courier is a bit slow.

Evening,

Just to be clear; I am merely a customer who has bought plates from Autostyle. I am not connected with the company in any other way!

Dave

Thanks for the link! Just ordered some for when CleanDetail get my car so they can fit them for me then :)

Bought some from a Kent Dealer on eBay, no reg docs required, but the BS code on the front one was mis-printed! I asked him to reprint it and he was more than happy to oblige - sent them next day too.

I fitted a stainless surround to the rear - opinions welcome.

I bought both sets of mine from the same seller very good quality.

Aslong as the plate has the British Standard Mark along witht he post code of the place that made them they will be legal!

Ive made 2 sets, Full lenght private plate with "aberdeen audi" their post code and BS marks

Other set Cut plates with 11mm border around letters (legal requirement) but with no BS mark or aberdeen audi or post code....

All good my back one is a bit more orange the yellow, but what I'm questioning is do people get pulled with these? They are top quality have the Bs bit and the supplier with post code is there anything else needed?

I would imagin it all depends on the policeman ,if he wants to give you a tug it just gives him a reason to pull you, ,personally I try to avoid the old bill as much as poss so use standard plates
